"Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!" The five consecutive explosions of Vital Energy struck the Octopus Zombie, tearing its body apart in chunks. The flames contained in one of the shots could not ignite its viscous form; as soon as fire appeared, a sticky liquid oozed from its body, extinguishing the flames.
This was the most troublesome Zombie Zheng Yifan had encountered so far. Even Third-Stage Zombies were merely direct threats with straightforward attacks, but this Second-Level Zombie seemed utterly unfazed. The spear thrust into its body had little effect; the immense force and penetrating power felt like they were piercing through emptiness.
The soft body slowly lunged toward Zheng Yifan, resembling a massive pudding, becoming increasingly pliable as green liquid dripped down.
This was no ordinary Second-Level Zombie; it was a Mutated Second-Stage Zombie. During his battle at Cat Ear Cliff, he had faced those strange fish-like Zombies, but those had not fully evolved; they were merely trapped for a short time.
In contrast, the Zombies before him were entirely different. They had completed their evolution along a different path, transforming into monsters that resembled marine creatures.
Especially now, with a strength akin to that of Soft-bodied Creatures, they were incredibly formidable. If Superpowered Individuals from the Superpower or Nature Systems faced these Zombies, it would be quite simple—perhaps even safer than dealing with ordinary Zombies.
Because they lacked powerful offensive capabilities. However, Zheng Yifan found them to be exceptionally strong. The writhing Tentacles quickly jabbed at him, forcing him to evade passively. The cave space barely allowed for one person to pass through, leaving no opportunity for Zheng Yifan to escape.
"Die!" Zheng Yifan thrust his left hand forward, holding the Adamantium Shield in front of him as he charged ahead. He firmly believed in the shield's strength; using it as a battering ram, he pushed the Octopus-like Second-Level Zombie back a step before delivering a kick to its abdomen.
The impact was tremendous. Zheng Yifan's enhanced body was ferocious beyond measure. After his recent evolution, he had grown even stronger. With one kick, the Zombie's body curled backward violently. Then Zheng Yifan withdrew his spear and continued to stab at the Octopus Zombie's Tentacles. The explosive force shattered the Tentacles, rendering them unable to attack and forcing them to passively endure Zheng Yifan's onslaught. In an instant, his overwhelming power tore through the Zombie's body.
Suddenly, a faint purple glow appeared at the Heart location. The light was dim and obstructed by countless muscle fibers; it flickered briefly before being buried beneath layers of soft tissue.
Zheng Yifan was utterly shocked; he never expected that the Zombie Crystal behind this Mutated Zombie's neck had shifted position—right where the Zombie's Heart was located—with Tentacles extending from both sides of its ribcage.
But now it seemed as if its sinews had been severed and it was slowly writhing.
Zheng Yifan's strength far exceeded that of an ordinary Third-Stage Zombie. Yet facing this Second-Level Zombie proved so challenging that one could imagine how much this soft-bodied Zombie countered him.
In just a few seconds, the Zombie had returned to its original state, rapidly recovering. The glow on the Zombie Crystal became even more dazzling as Zheng Yifan could clearly see it gradually emerging through the fibers.
"Now is the time!" Having spotted the Zombie Crystal, Zheng Yifan could not allow it to recover. He thrust his spear forward with all his might, instantly piercing through the fragile fibers and striking the Zombie Crystal. A sticky sensation followed, and then it felt as if he had broken through some kind of barrier, causing him to loosen his grip.
Soon, Zheng Yifan felt a wave of relief wash over him as the Zombie before him began to slowly dissolve. The Zombie Crystal fell to the ground. This single thrust had managed to dislodge the Zombie Crystal.
The Zombie Crystal was no longer the size of a thumb joint; it had grown significantly larger, its internal power more refined, almost comparable to a Third-Stage Soul Crystal.
After easily storing the Zombie Crystal in his Storage Space, he continued forward. The rugged path seemed devoid of Zombies.
Just moments ago, there had been over a dozen Zombies behind the Octopus Zombie, but now they were nearly all gone.
The ground was dotted with remnants of Zombie fluid, and the Octopus Zombie was completely absorbed by a green vine almost instantly after its death.
The passage ahead was narrow and uneven, leading him further on. Fragments of tattered clothing could be seen scattered along the walls.
"Puff puff puff!" Something seemed to fly past in mid-air. Turning around, he saw bats flitting about before disappearing in an instant.
As he pressed on, the ground began to tremble beneath him. Zheng Yifan sensed a strong sense of danger; it was definitely the threat he had felt from outside.
Then a large group of Zombies came into view. It was a massive cave, spanning several thousand square meters. In the center stood a short plant—though short in stature, it was four to five meters wide and two to three meters tall. Vines extended from it like tendrils, burrowing into the soil above and below as Zombies slowly emerged from behind the plant in the cave.
The cave was wide and appeared to have an end; sunlight trickled in from above. It was astonishing that after descending so far—at least a hundred meters below ground—there was still sunlight in such a deep place.
But that wasn't the most terrifying part.
The most horrifying aspect was that within this stone chamber were over a dozen Second-Level Zombies and a creature unlike any he had ever seen before. Standing three or four meters tall, its muscles were exposed, resembling something no longer human. Its claws were stronger than those of a bear, and its body was tightly muscled with thick legs below.
It looked like a beast that had been skinned alive, but what was most frightening was its mouth—it was far worse than any wolf's maw, nearly consuming its entire head.
The teeth were over half a meter long, especially the four canine teeth, resembling those of a Saber-Toothed Tiger, with drops of green liquid falling to the ground.
That was the crystallization of the Zombie Virus. Superpowered Individuals were not afraid of ordinary Zombie Viruses, but if such a high-level virus were injected into the body, it would inevitably turn one into a Zombie.
It was essential to treat the Zombie in front of him with caution, especially with a dozen grotesque Octopus Zombies nearby.
Before Zheng Yifan could regain his composure, the Zombies around him began to boil with activity, rushing toward him and attacking with their Tentacles.
These Zombies moved in unison, blocking all lines of sight as if they had rehearsed their actions in advance.
Zheng Yifan's first instinct was not to attack them but to escape quickly while there was still a path behind him. He simply could not handle so many Zombies at once.
A Tentacle flew toward him, spraying a stream of liquid—this was the Zombie's own fluid, which could only be ejected in times of crisis.
But now, they took the initiative and sprayed first.
Crisis!
Zheng Yifan instantly felt the terror of the Zombies before him. It wasn't just their Soft-bodied Creature-like attacks or their nearly impenetrable bodies; it was their intelligence. Intelligent beings could control them.
Just like now. A dozen Zombies simultaneously sprayed liquid, covering almost every area, leaving no room to dodge.
Zheng Yifan curled his body into a ball, placing his Adamantium Shield in front of him while bouncing backward, trying to use the shield to absorb as much impact as possible.
A sound more intense than sulfuric acid erupted—a Corrosive hiss filled the air as deep pits nearly half a meter formed in the ground, filled with murky liquid. Even stones were melted down into liquid.
Fortunately, Eidman Alloy was one of the strongest metals in the world and could withstand such strong acids.
But the surface of the shield was no longer recognizable, reduced to a pure white metallic color. The coating on the shield had completely vanished, leaving it shining brightly, as if polished by the corrosive liquid.
However, this was definitely not a good sign; it indicated that Zheng Yifan's shield coating had been entirely eroded by the corrosive substance, leaving only the Eidman Alloy. A drop of liquid splashed onto Zheng Yifan's clothes, merely gliding over the folds before sticking to the wall. Just that small contact had already corroded two massive holes, and fortunately, it hadn’t touched Zheng Yifan's body.
After stumbling back three or four steps, Zheng Yifan braced himself with the Adamantium Shield in his left hand while holding a spear in his right, waiting for the zombies to come through.
The zombies in front resembled deflated balloons, instantly shrinking and squeezing in like octopuses, their bodies writhing. Their heads nearly retracted into their torsos, transforming into soft-bodied creatures. What was once a passage wide enough for only one person now allowed three zombies to pass through simultaneously.
They crowded together, and from the front, tentacles shot out like spears.
The tentacles that appeared simultaneously unleashed deadly attacks that were impossible to block; even with the Adamantium Shield, it was futile to completely defend against them.
At that moment, Zheng Yifan chose not to defend anymore; blocking was ineffective because another wave of tentacles was about to strike him.
He could only go on the offensive, sacrificing his own safety for momentum and advantage.
Half of his body curled behind the Adamantium Shield while his right arm exerted all its strength to attack the zombie's body.
He needed the zombie to turn around because the Zombie Crystal was now pinned beneath its body. Unlike others, Zheng Yifan couldn’t completely destroy the soft-bodied Octopus Zombie in front of him; he could only aim for its vital points to secure victory.
A surge of Vital Energy accompanied his spear thrust.
But what resonated first was the sound of the Adamantium Shield being struck.
“Clang! Clang!” It sounded like a bell tolling as fierce attacks came one after another. Zheng Yifan’s body was even lifted off the ground by the force of the blows.
In an instant, it felt as if he had been struck by a dozen heavy hammers on his shield; even his left arm began to feel numb and sore.
This was definitely not the power that the Zombie had displayed earlier. That Zombie only knew how to attack mindlessly, but now, their attacks were more focused, targeting almost the same spot.
The strength was overwhelming, yet Zheng Yifan still pressed on, launching his most skilled thrust. This was the only move he had; he wanted to see if he could break through the Zombie's outer fibrous tissue.
His target was the Zombie on the right, which had just finished attacking. Its Tentacle was retracting, revealing a small patch of soft flesh beneath its abdomen. In that fleeting moment, Zheng Yifan thrust his spear forward, piercing into the abdomen of the Zombie that was pulling back its Tentacle. Flesh splattered, followed by resilient fibrous fragments.
"Hit! It has to hit!" Zheng Yifan nearly shouted.
But reality was cruel; in the end, only a thin layer remained on the Zombie Crystal. The subsequent attack made Zheng Yifan feel as if he had fallen into an ice cave.
"Thud! Thud! Thud!" He felt the Zombie's Tentacle pierce into his left shoulder.
While he could retract into his Adamantium Shield for defense, attacking inevitably exposed him to vulnerabilities. Clearly, the Zombie opposite him seized that fleeting opportunity; three Tentacles smashed down on Zheng Yifan's left arm, nearly shattering it completely. Now it was hardly any better; the Tentacle's strikes were more like slaps against his body—sharp but not razor-edged—yet they were enough to puncture three large holes.
Fortunately, his Heart area was fully protected by the Adamantium Shield, leaving only half of his shoulder exposed.
However, this injury was nearly enough to render him disabled.
In that instant, Zheng Yifan gritted his teeth and quickly executed another swift thrust with his right hand. There were no grand movements; he simply retracted and thrust forward again for an additional twenty centimeters.
He instantly broke through the last layer of fibers, and then the Zombie Crystal was like a gem plucked out by the tip of Zheng Yifan's spear.
Exchanging one shoulder for a Zombie's life—Zheng Yifan was determined to fight on.
But there was no choice; two more Zombies remained. Their Tentacles were slowly retracting as they prepared for another assault. The head of one began to emerge slowly, its sharp teeth dripping with green Zombie Venom, as if it were ready to feast on him.
This was inevitable; their bloodlust had driven them to a frenzy. The Zombies now only wanted to feed, with no other thoughts in mind. The other Zombie behind them boiled with excitement as both pressed into that singular opening. For a moment, they seemed evenly matched; neither could push through while the corpse slowly melted away, still buying them a few seconds of time.
A few seconds were all it took. Zheng Yifan gritted his teeth and thrust forward with all his might!
With a powerful strike, he quickly retracted his weapon and jabbed again. Each time he was hit, it felt as if his left shoulder had been swept by a machine gun, relentlessly under attack. Inside his body, the Super Soldier Gene was replenishing the missing cells, continuously dividing. His bones automatically fused together; whenever two adjacent bones connected, they would link up, and slowly, the cells would divide and heal once more.
This rapid healing ability faced an onslaught like a torrential downpour, a punishment more brutal than anything in the world. Yet Zheng Yifan endured. If he hadn't fully grasped the power of In Calamity, he wouldn't have been able to hold on. If it weren't for his indomitable will, he would have faltered.
Without an extraordinary perseverance that surpassed ordinary people, he wouldn't have made it this far. But he was truly holding on now because he wanted to live. He had people to protect, and he still had parents in the real world.
He didn't even have a formal girlfriend yet.
What a joke! He had thousands of subordinates; hundreds of thousands depended on him for their livelihoods! How could he die without having a woman of his own?
It was this absurd reasoning, this almost laughable Otaku's roar!
Zheng Yifan erupted! To be continued.
