Vital Energy recovery seemed like a distant dream in a world lacking Vital Energy. It felt almost impossible to restore oneself.
Only by absorbing enough Vital Energy in the Apocalyptic World could one fully recover. The power within the cells was merely the body's inherent strength, much like the abilities of Captain America after his recent evolution.
Even the power of the Second Tier had not been restored.
Reorganizing his Battle Gear, he prepared numerous stone scraps at the Stone Market, ready to block the stone chamber with his Storage Space. This would give him more time to evade that strange Zombie, allowing him a bit more time to recover. In just an hour or two, he could regain all his strength; his cells had already begun to heal, and he just needed to store enough Vital Energy, akin to refueling a car.
Opening the Time-Space Barrier, Zheng Yifan clenched his teeth and charged in, holding the Adamantium Shield.
Right before him was the grotesque face of the Mutated Zombie, its ugly giant maw filled with teeth looming over him.
It turned out that after Zheng Yifan had vanished, it had been waiting here. The pain fueled its underdeveloped brain with hatred, while the more intelligent Zombie had disappeared again. Zheng Yifan had never encountered this particular Zombie before.
“Roar!” The Mutated Zombie bellowed and lunged at Zheng Yifan.
At that moment, Zheng Yifan had no time to spare. He released a large amount of stones from the Time-Space Barrier.
Unfortunately, these stones did not fall where he intended; they tumbled out like they were being emptied from a pocket, rolling naturally onto the ground. Some even found their way into the Zombie's mouth.
Then a horrifying scene unfolded: the Zombie effortlessly chewed the stones into fragments, swallowing them down with its saliva. A green gas emerged as the stones melted into liquid, resembling cola.
Instantly, a chill ran through Zheng Yifan, prompting him to flee in panic.
Behind him lay a passage blocked by rubble at least five or six meters thick. However, it wasn't long before he heard the thunderous sound of stones cracking and something corrosive gnawing away at them.
His body was only slowly absorbing the external Vital Energy, leaving no time for a gradual restoration of strength.
With only First Level power at his disposal, he couldn't hope to deal with that hulking brute behind him. Even facing those Second Tier mutated octopus-like Zombies was beyond his capability.
As he ran, he released more rubble, quickly filling up the entire passageway. He just needed to reach the bottom of the waterhole; from there, he could escape into open waters. He would eventually have to deal with this troublesome Zombie upon his return.
But as soon as Zheng Yifan entered the passage, he realized his mistake. He could only use his remaining Night Glow Powder to mark the path he was currently traversing; all traces of the route he had taken earlier had vanished completely, and the walls were even damper than before, as if they had been entirely submerged in water.
In an instant, Zheng Yifan understood that there would inevitably come a time when this place would be completely submerged in water. This was what had caused those Zombies to evolve into their current amphibious forms, and the soft-bodied shape was a result of collective evolution.
Fortunately, they had not evolved into turtles. Otherwise, Zheng Yifan would surely have spat blood.
Gradually, all the rubble had piled up in the cave. A good several tons of stones, which he believed could hold back the frenzied Mutated Zombie for a while.
With relative safety established, Zheng Yifan immediately sat down to empty his mind, allowing Vital Energy to flow rapidly into his body. Meanwhile, on the other side of the stone chamber, the Mutated Zombie was frantically clawing at the rubble with its two front paws, saliva spraying onto the hard rock. The stones were instantly crushed into fragments as if they were tofu.
The speed was astonishing; an average of a large amount of stones was destroyed every second, mixed in with whole boulders that served as the primary "heroes" blocking the Zombies' advance. The Zombies pressed forward relentlessly.
Zheng Yifan had no way out. He did not know if he would be blocked by this monster again if he went out and then returned. If the Time-Space Barrier disappeared, Zheng Yifan could lose access to the entire Apocalyptic World.
This was absolutely unacceptable. Under pressure, he could only absorb Vital Energy as quickly as possible. Gradually, Zheng Yifan began to sense the flow of Vital Energy around him and could draw it into his body. This was not a form of cultivation; there was no way to cultivate. It was an instinct rooted in his genes, and now he could feel it clearly.
Along with this came a sense of the Zombie's position.
It was still over thirty meters away from him and could break through about a meter every minute. Of course, that Mutated Zombie had stopped secreting saliva; otherwise, its speed would have been even greater. A faint mental force enveloped Zheng Yifan through the layers of rock, and he felt that this mental force was constantly searching for weaknesses in him to attack.
Unfortunately for it, although his Vital Energy had not fully recovered, his mental state was at its peak—there wasn't a single gap to exploit.
After a while, that sensation faded. Slowly, Zheng Yifan sensed something unusual within the Zombie's body, like a star in the galaxy that could never be ignored.
There was an absolutely powerful force within it; this power might have caused that Zombie to mutate so strangely or perhaps triggered all Second-Level Zombies to undergo mutation together.
Drip, drip... Water droplets fell slowly from the stalactites above onto the ground, splashing up droplets before soaking into the earth. Behind him, he could already hear an agonizing sound coming from the wall—the noise created by the Zombie destroying the rock.
Zombies were different from humans; they never tired. Like a Perpetual Motion Machine, they could endlessly repeat one action without feeling bored.
However, what they brought was not creation but death. Only three or four meters remained now; even through the rock, he could smell that faintly putrid odor.
Zheng Yifan had only regained about eighty percent of his strength now, and his strongest weapon, the Silver Spear, was not by his side. He couldn't exert his full power at all. As for the Nine Dragons Bright Silver Spear...
After the appearance of the Silver Spear, it mysteriously vanished without a trace.
Now, Zheng Yifan could only break through the Zombie's vicinity and head to the stone chamber to retrieve his weapon.
The only thing he could rely on was the Adamantium Shield. He prepared his stance and breathed slowly, adjusting his mindset and strength. He found himself in a relatively large stone chamber.
Of course, "large" was relative; it was just slightly wider than the narrow stone tunnel he had been in. He hung from the top of the tunnel, ready to throw the Left-Handed Edman Alloy Shield at any moment.
The sound of stones cracking grew louder. He could hear the terrifying roar of the Zombie and the corrosive sound of its saliva.
Suddenly, with a loud crash, the entire pile of rubble shattered, and an enormous Mutated Zombie charged out. Its massive jaws opened wide before it even spotted its target, and without regard for Zheng Yifan's presence, it lunged forward to bite.
With a sharp snap, a loud noise echoed as a large chunk of debris was swallowed whole.
The last segment of stone was among the strongest he had purchased. It was also the largest. Yet, it still couldn't stop the Zombie's advance.
He had considered buying more earlier, but there was no way; he had little retreat left behind him. If he were to unwittingly fall into a dead end, that would truly be fatal.
After all, the current situation was somewhat favorable for him. The moment the Zombie appeared, Zheng Yifan threw the Adamantium Shield and curled his body into a ball, rolling through the air and nearly brushing past the Zombie.
With a thud! The Adamantium Shield made contact with the Zombie first, slicing into its neck like a sharp chainsaw.
If it were an ordinary Second-Level Zombie, its head would have been severed instantly. Unfortunately, such damage against a massive Mutated Zombie was like scratching an itch through thick socks—utterly ineffective. It merely severed a few strands of muscle on its exterior.
Then came a heavy slap that struck hard against the Adamantium Shield, nearly driving it into the ground. A hand grabbed onto the wall as its body spun around violently.
In that brief moment, Zheng Yifan had already escaped without looking back. His left hand summoned the Adamantium Shield behind him while his legs seemed to be powered by motors as he ran desperately. He could still faintly see traces of Night Glow Powder; after all, he had used a significant amount when fleeing—not just a little like an exploration team would do but rather scattering it like flour across the ground from bags.
When he ran low on it, he pulled more from his Storage Space.
The path was illuminated by Night Glow Powder; although most had been destroyed by the Zombie, some dust always found gaps to reveal itself.
Run, he must escape.
Zheng Yifan held onto this single belief as the Zombie behind him was already in sight. In terms of speed, the creature's swiftness was beyond description. It used all four limbs to propel itself forward, and even though the sharp stones and stalactites in the cave had long been destroyed by Zheng Yifan, turning it into a simple stone cavern, the space was still barely four meters high.
The cave had been excavated by the Mutated Zombie into a passage wide enough for it to fit through.
"Boom! Boom!" The sound echoed like a raging beast as it chased after Zheng Yifan. Within just three or four seconds, it was already right behind him, its sharp teeth constantly aimed at him. The moment he hesitated, it would sink its teeth into him.
If the virus were injected into Zheng Yifan's body, there would be no escape for him.
At the same time, an elusive mental force continued to disrupt his thoughts.
He felt surrounded on all sides, and he still needed to cover several dozen meters to reach the stone chamber ahead.
Normally, that distance could be crossed quickly, but now it felt like a chasm.
Inside the chamber, buried deep underground, the Silver Spear seemed to sense its master's call and trembled incessantly.
"Roar!" At that moment, the Zombie's claws were already outstretched, just over two meters away from Zheng Yifan. It was only a step away from catching him, and its highly acidic saliva was about to spray forth.
The crisis was dire. To be continued.
