Fifty miles from the Jiang Grand Bridge, several footprints were pressed into the damp ground, beside which new sprouts struggled to break through the surface. No one expected the temperature to rise so quickly. Just a rain, and spring had arrived; the environment of the apocalypse was unpredictable.
“Shh!” A hissing sound broke the silence, and a cloud of mist descended from the air, slowly condensing into a human form.
It was Zhou Rui, his face filled with tension as he looked at Zheng Yifan, truly unsure of what to do.
Because that scene was too terrifying.
“Leader, we absolutely cannot move forward any further. It’s too frightening. An endless sea of Zombies, and among them are several large Fellow types. I was attacked while floating in mid-air.”
“Fortunately, when I transformed into mist, I wasn’t subject to physical attacks; otherwise, I would never have made it back.” Now it seemed that Zhou Rui bore varying degrees of Corrosive damage, his skin appearing much duller.
When he transformed into mist and sustained damage, it wasn’t his physical form that was harmed but rather the moisture within him. Without moisture, life itself would be lost.
Standing there, steam rose from the ground, slowly replenishing the mist surrounding Zhou Rui.
Zheng Yifan became more cautious. They only had five hundred people. While that seemed like a considerable number, facing off against a horde of millions of Zombies meant that there would be no chance to fight back—let alone escape.
They were relentless predators, attacking with every means possible. First Level Zombies were merely cannon fodder. There were also Second Tier, Third Stage, and even Fourth Stage Zombies.
Once trapped in a horde of Zombies, even the strongest expert would have no chance of survival.
“We must start here and proceed cautiously. Gradually retreat and wear down their Advanced Zombie forces. All resources in the Gathering Place are being directed toward war. The more time we buy, the better prepared they will be.” Zheng Yifan continued speaking; delaying further would allow more moisture to evaporate from the ground, making fire attacks more effective.
In this humid environment, the effectiveness of fire attacks would be significantly reduced.
"Boss, let's do it this way. After all, we're all in vehicles, and the Low-Level Zombies definitely won't catch up to us with our thirty-plus cars. We have a total of twenty machine guns that can hold them off while we fight and retreat," Li Ning said, glancing at the machine gun mounted on the Armored Transport Vehicle, itching to fire a few rounds.
Unfortunately, he wasn't a Superpowered Individual skilled in firearms; even if he got the chance, he wouldn't be able to make much noise.
The Superpowered Individuals using firearms were visibly excited. Attacking while on the move was a slaughter for them, a killing spree that released all their pent-up stress.
Moreover, there were others handling the Advanced Zombies; they just needed to lure the Advanced Zombies out.
"Alright, let's proceed with this plan. But everyone must understand: absolutely no acting alone. We need to maintain formation, and if things go south, we must retreat quickly. No individual heroics!" Zheng Yifan set the battle objectives and then hopped into the vehicle.
He had to take the lead position because he had ample experience dealing with Advanced Zombies. He could even directly attack Second and Third Tier Zombies with his Adamantium Shield.
Li Ning's face was filled with excitement. He was a destroyer against large numbers of Zombies; his Tornado attacks would instill fear in those mindless creatures.
Everyone settled into their vehicles and slowly advanced. Laughter filled the air as they made sure to pack their military rations and supplies thoroughly.
No one knew if they might end up isolated somewhere. The supplies on their bodies could sustain them for half a month, and even if they ventured deep into the mountains, they had a chance of survival unless they encountered powerful beasts.
With spirits high, the vehicles sped along. Aside from a few ruins resembling abandoned villages, the landscape was an endless expanse of wilderness, with patches of fresh green signaling the arrival of spring.
Of course, much of that greenery was due to the bodily fluids left behind by last year's Zombies. As they raced across the wilds, their suppressed emotions finally found release; the sky was clear and high, with faint melodies echoing in the air.
Their current objective was to attract Zombies rather than hide. They needed to tread carefully on the road ahead to prevent being encircled by Zombies from behind.
Now was the time to attract Zombies head-on. Zhou Rui had returned to mid-air; he needed to monitor both sides for any encircling movements by Zombies. If such a situation arose, Zheng Yifan and his team would have to break through at once.
Otherwise, if they were surrounded, their group of over five hundred would be left stranded here.
It was simply impossible to break through; the sheer number had already caused a qualitative change.
The vehicles sped along quickly, with two individuals wielding Sniper Rifles aiming at the distant horizon, ready to wait for the appearance of Zombies at any moment.
Zhou Rui's smoke in mid-air shifted like a series of arrows, marking the agreed-upon targets.
These marked the advancing directions of the surrounding Zombies.
He floated hundreds of meters high, drifting with the air currents. When he drifted too far from his body, he would lower himself and float back.
This way, he could see the oddly shaped clouds above Zheng Yifan and the others being blown away by the wind, and then he would exert himself to move closer.
"Scattered Zombies have appeared ahead. Don't worry about the Low-Level Zombies; let Li Ning deal with them. The large groups of Zombies in the distance and those Advanced Zombies are our targets," Zheng Yifan commanded, casually tossing his Adamantium Shield.
He had no hesitation in dealing with such Low-Level Zombies; it was effortless and merely a matter of convenience.
Using the Adamantium Shield in the most ordinary way posed no burden for him.
Unlike others who had to expend Superpower, he acted without concern.
Once the Adamantium Shield flew out, it traced an arc in mid-air, and one Zombie after another began to fall. As it passed by several Zombies, it merely grazed them before returning.
The convoy continued forward, and the number of Zombies increased. At this point, many Superpowered Individuals also sprang into action. It wasn't that they wanted to conserve their strength for later attacks; Second-Level Zombies had already appeared.
These were their next targets. Firearms were still waiting for a large number of Zombies, but those with ranged attack capabilities among the Superpowered Individuals didn’t care about conserving energy; they eliminated Zombies as if mowing grass.
Their Superpowers were used with exceptional skill, and their strength was fierce. Li Ning had put considerable effort into selecting the Guard Camp.
Flames erupted in front of the convoy, surging forth like a tidal wave towards the Zombies.
It was a horde of two to three hundred Zombies. The flames wielded by the Superpowered Individuals were not particularly fierce; each person used only a small amount of Superpower, accumulating into a broad blaze. The intent was not to kill them.
Instead, it was to force the Second Tier and Third-Stage Zombies out into the open.
Sure enough, a dozen Second-Level Zombies immediately sprang forth, no longer hiding among the Low-Level Zombies, their Scorpion Tails flicking as they accelerated to their maximum speed.
Suddenly, a flash of white light appeared in midair; it was Zheng Yifan's Adamantium Shield. Now infused with a small amount of Vital Energy, the Adamantium Shield sliced through the ranks of Second-Level Zombies. While its lethality wasn't overwhelming, it precisely targeted their necks.
That was the most vulnerable spot for Zombies. The Third-Stage Zombies had already learned to protect their vital areas, but the Second-Level Zombies had not yet mastered this. Their Zombie Crystal s were more like gems embedded in their necks; a fierce attack could easily dislodge them.
Moreover, Zheng Yifan had evolved to the Fourth Stage with his Adamantium Shield. Although its lethality hadn't significantly increased, his control over it had become much smoother—a natural feeling that came when his Character Card upgraded to gold.
It felt as if something that had once belonged to others was now entirely his, allowing him to wield it freely.
Zheng Yifan's speculation proved correct. If he had followed the usual path of advancement, reaching the Fourth Stage would have been the hardest period for him—losing all abilities and having to start from scratch as those card powers faded away.
However, after advancing to a Golden Character Card, Zheng Yifan retained his strength, and his physical power truly belonged to him.
The Fifth Level was a threshold; Superpowered Individuals entering this level would genuinely touch the core of their Superpower. Zombies evolving into Fifth Level would become immensely powerful, while Zheng Yifan would also need to undergo a dormant period before truly becoming strong—this was the path prepared for him by that shadow within the Time-Space Barrier.
Unfortunately for him, Zheng Yifan had never taken the conventional route. Luck had granted him that Mysterious Gem, allowing him to retain abilities still present within him.
The Golden Character Card represented complete ownership of all powers.
The Adamantium Shield swept through the air with immense power and agile turns, slicing past the necks of the Zombies before returning. In its wake, one could see glimmering Zombie Crystal s trailing behind it.
This was an attempt by Zheng Yifan, who made his Adamantium Shield use its Vital Energy to suction the Zombie Crystal s like a vacuum.
To his surprise, it actually worked.
Li Ning glanced at Zheng Yifan and thrust his uniquely shaped Psychic Weapon forward with force.
With just a gentle poke, a large amount of air condensed within, becoming increasingly concentrated, as if all the air was gathered inside. The external pressure, combined with the Duality's Rejection power, sealed the weapon's exterior to prevent any air from escaping.
Slowly, as the power reached full saturation, Li Ning released the Rejection force at the front.
In an instant, the power erupted like a tidal wave, shooting out a spherical blast of air that resembled an air cannon, infused with wild energy, crashing into the Zombie horde.
"Boom!" The intense explosion sounded as if a Missile from the Post-Apocalypse had struck the Zombie crowd. The overwhelming shockwave sent the lowest-tier Zombies flying in all directions. The vibrating force even dislodged their unstable Zombie Crystal s.
"How about that? This new technique I developed is pretty good, right?" Li Ning said with a smile as he looked at his Psychic Weapon. Suddenly, he shook his head. "But it really wears down the weapon too much. If I keep using this technique, it’ll be useless in less than half a year."
His face was filled with concern; after all, this was all his property—his entire fortune!
