"Leader, you have arrived!" The warriors at the entrance of the shelter looked up in admiration at Zheng Yifan, the Ruler of the Gathering Place, the strongest among them.
Their eyes were filled with envy and jealousy as they gazed at his formidable shield and spear. Their own Superpowers were rather unconventional, lacking significant utility in everyday life; otherwise, they wouldn't be stationed here guarding the shelter. But now, they felt confident enough to step onto the battlefield, realizing that this was not abandonment but rather a blessing.
When that immense power reached the Second Tier, it manifested fully. Each of them had experienced countless twists and turns in their lives, and now they were undergoing a transformation. The Superpowered Individual who had nearly been taken down by a Gliding Zombie trembled in anticipation.
Then, they watched as his body slowly turned into an ethereal shadow before finally vanishing with a loud "bang," disappearing without a trace.
He was gone without a single remnant, making it seem as if he had never existed at all.
Everyone around focused intently on that spot, and soon countless fragments began to reassemble into his original form. He stood there, dazed, staring at his hands in disbelief.
"I... I can actually dissipate?" He looked at his hands as they disintegrated and then reformed repeatedly.
However, after just three or four attempts, his body could no longer withstand it and collapsed completely.
His original Superpower merely allowed him to phase out momentarily to evade an opponent's attack.
But upon reaching the Second Tier, it became a complete transcendence—dissipation. Dissipating into the earth while retaining his essence. He could still recover and observe himself. To be able to dissipate three or four times at just the Second Tier was already astonishing; it meant he could possess three or four lives and quickly evade danger when necessary. What a powerful Superpower—it was akin to being immortal.
"Leader, I can dissipate now! I can decompose my body into the most primitive particles in the world and teleport over short distances." With that, he dissolved completely again. When he reappeared, he surprisingly found himself behind Zheng Yifan, though he chose a considerable distance away.
After all, Zheng Yifan was the leader of the Gathering Place; standing too close could easily lead to misunderstandings. He had already raised Li Ning and the others' vigilance; everyone was ready with their weapons.
"There's no need to be afraid. Your Superpower is incredibly useful. I hope you can contribute to the Gathering Place and all humanity in the days to come. Together we will create a brighter future," Zheng Yifan said calmly.
It sounded somewhat formulaic but came from a place of sincerity.
The Superpowered Individual nodded vigorously and suddenly glanced down at himself. Feeling shy, he hurried over to grab his clothes and clumsily put them on.
After he dissipated, he surprisingly could not take his belongings with him. When he reformed, he found himself completely naked.
In his earlier excitement, he had forgotten about this detail. Now, he felt a twinge of embarrassment.
Zheng Yifan smiled helplessly and turned to look at the other Superpowered Individuals. They were all adapting to their own Superpowers, perhaps not as visibly affected by the dissipation as he was. But they all knew that from now on, they were fundamentally different; the distinction between a Second-Stage Esper and a First-Level Esper was like night and day. Beyond their Superpowers, there was also a significant enhancement of their own abilities, and moreover, no Superpower was entirely useless.
Among them was a Superpowered Individual with the Mechanical Maintenance ability. He had originally come to maintain Medical Equipment, but now he felt the surge of his Superpower within him, gaining strength akin to that of the technicians in the Superpowered Weapon Manufacturing Factory. He could create mechanical Psychic Weapons—a power he had inexplicably acquired, referred to in his memories as Mechanics. Now, it represented the strength of modern industry, an extension of human wisdom at a certain level of civilization.
His eyes sparkled with excitement; this Senior Engineer from the Post-Apocalypse had finally found his passion for work in this new world.
"Boss, I apply to join the Superpowered Weapon Manufacturing Factory. Just now, when I upgraded to Second-Stage Esper, a message appeared in my mind reminding me that I have become a Mechanic's Superpower owner," he said eagerly, looking at Zheng Yifan.
When Zheng Yifan nodded lightly, the man’s face flushed with excitement.
What was the Superpowered Weapon Manufacturing Factory? It was the strongest factory in the entire Hope Gathering Place's Military Merit system, possessing complete resource allocation from the Gathering Place and manufacturing weapons most suitable for Superpowered Individuals across the Gathering Place and even the world. It was a cornerstone for ushering in a new era—the Superpower Era.
Mechanics did not allow one to create various weapons but enabled the construction of large machinery. He didn’t know exactly how these machines would be used by Superpowered Individuals, but he was certain that he would become one of the pioneers in establishing the foundation of the Gathering Place.
Zheng Yifan was unaware of how much impact this nameless warrior would have once he entered Factory One over the next few years—he would change the entire landscape of the world and successfully usher in a whole new era.
After calming down these excited Superpowered Individuals, Zheng Yifan led the Guard Camp warriors into battle. They were still within the walls of the Gathering Place, a relatively safe area; once they dealt with those Gliding Zombies outside, there would be no more enemies.
Meanwhile, outside, their foes continued to advance relentlessly. Shi Laonian had been engaged in a standoff with a massive Zombie for nearly half an hour. The enormous creature had been worn down significantly; it had lost at least a meter in height as its tough skin was completely stripped away, leaving only flexible muscle beneath. The energy within its body surged wildly from Shi Laonian's attacks.
With exquisite technique combined with formidable Superpower, Shi Laonian completely suppressed this giant Zombie on a technical level. However, there was no doubt that this Zombie was incredibly powerful; if not for having eliminated Gliding Zombies beforehand and suffering significant losses in Inferno, it could have easily overpowered Shi Laonian now.
But who was Shi Laonian? He was someone who never let an opportunity slip by without taking advantage of it. If there was an advantage to be had and he didn’t seize it, then he would truly be foolish.
He charged in, mercilessly beating the massive Zombie until it was left in tatters. The Superpower within him was continuously evolving; he felt that if he could take down this Zombie, he would surely ascend to the Third Stage of Superpower.
There was no substitute for real combat; the thrill of advancement was exhilarating, allowing him to integrate all his battle techniques seamlessly.
Between life and death lay great terror, but also great opportunity—this has been recorded in martial arts texts throughout history. Shi Laonian found himself in such a situation now.
He absolutely could not afford any mistakes. Just a slight misstep against the towering Zombie before him could lead to a fate worse than death. Despite his current dominance over the massive creature, the power within that Zombie far surpassed his own by millions of times. One chance was all it needed to turn him into pulp and swallow him whole.
This was the gap of ranks—irreplaceable and unbridgeable.
Gradually, Zheng Yifan appeared on the city wall, fending off the Zombies that were slowly climbing up. Below, the ground was swarming with Zombies, like ants everywhere. A glance around revealed a sea of Zombies, while powerful Mutated Zombies and Second Tier to Third Stage and even Fourth Stage Zombies were gathering their strength in the distance, with low-tier cannon fodder still paving a bloody staircase, hoping to storm the walls and wreak havoc.
But what awaited them was humanity's desperate struggle.
"Ah!" Just to the left of Zheng Yifan on the city wall, two Second-Level Zombies crawled up, their Scorpion Tails lashing out as they attacked a Superpowered Individual before them.
That individual wielded a kitchen knife—while others used conventional weapons, he had chosen something unconventional for battle.
Yet that kitchen knife was wielded with such skill that it seemed almost like an illusion. Waves of chilling killing intent surged forth from it; when it struck a Zombie, it resulted in instant dismemberment.
Butchering an Ox was nothing compared to this.
However, he now faced a crisis; the two Second-Level Zombies before him seemed like reapers emerging from hell, their deathly aura fixated on him while their Scorpion Tails stood ready to strike at any moment.
Suddenly, a flash of white light appeared, followed by the intense glow of an Adamantium Shield—so dazzling that it captivated everyone who sought power.
This was the strength of the Fourth Stage, filling every power-seeker's heart with longing.
They also wished to possess such power.
Once the Superpowered Individual resolved the life-and-death situation before him, he charged forward without waiting for the Second-Level Zombie to fully perish. He unleashed a flurry of chaotic strikes, truly a wild assault with no semblance of technique.
In the Flame Legion, there were tactical briefings, teaching methods for wielding weapons such as knife techniques, Shooting Skills, and staff techniques.
Moreover, there were retired special forces veterans from the Post-Apocalypse, veterans from various military districts, and martial arts masters providing guidance.
However, this Fellow before him was clearly a reckless fighter, lacking any strategy. His attacks were nothing but a chaotic barrage of strikes, akin to cutting through tangled weeds with a swift blade.
Yet the destructive power of his blows caught Zheng Yifan's attention. When the kitchen knife struck the Zombie, it was as if it had sliced through tofu, cleaving it in two. A surge of green energy flowed up the knife, transforming into red energy that evaporated and spread around him.
Then his speed increased. His strength grew stronger. It was as if he had been enhanced.
The phrase "growing bolder with each battle" perfectly described this warrior. Though nameless and only possessing First Level Superpower, in Zheng Yifan's eyes, he was a hero of the day. The warriors fighting valiantly on the city walls, refusing to retreat even an inch, were all heroes of today. True heroes were not those commanders who could only cower in their barracks and issue orders; real heroes were these nameless individuals who fought with all their blood and lives.
They were the unsung heroes, the true heroes.
