Silence! It seemed that for a moment, everyone lost their words, staring blankly as Ten Thousand Steps played with a grenade, its power immense. No one could figure out how those people had been attacked; they only knew that they were dead—without a doubt, dead.
Zheng Yifan had witnessed this move before, but he never expected that just a few cups thrown at those Superpowered Individuals could cause such massive damage.
"Haha! There's still a big fish left; it's the perfect opportunity to test my new invention." Ten Thousand Steps was now in a frenzy. He had always been trapped in the library, with no chance or time to truly engage in battle. Now, it felt like a brand new experience for him.
Forget any fear; all he felt was excitement. The apocalypse had arrived, and this drunken madman was finally experiencing his true spring.
In this Post-Apocalypse world, everything he couldn't try before was now within reach. Even Killing, which he had done countless times against Zombies, felt familiar to him.
He had taken down Zombies more times than he could count, and during battles, he never hesitated to unleash his strongest attacks.
Now, seeing Hu Lao San, the wild Ten Thousand Steps raised his ultimate weapon without hesitation—the enormous door panel.
No one recognized the Inscription on the door panel; only Ten Thousand Steps knew its purpose.
Now it was being used not for defense but for attack. Only a powerful strike could ensure Hu Lao San's demise on the spot.
Across from him, Liu Hao was ready with his bow and arrow, confident in achieving victory in battle. However, he had no faith in coming out unscathed and didn’t believe he could win with a single shot.
But Ten Thousand Steps did just that. Liu Hao watched as the massive door panel was lifted entirely into the air, slowly floating above them.
"Are you kidding me? Do you really think you can crush me with that door panel?" Hu Lao San had personally seen Ten Thousand Steps unload it from the vehicle. There was nothing strange about it at all.
If there was anything he feared, it was the Fellow who held the girl; that was the truly terrifying powerhouse. Even Second-Stage Espers referred to him as 'Chief,' which spoke volumes about his combat prowess. Hu Lao San had already devised a plan: if he ever faced that Fellow in battle, he would use the strategy of surrounding Wei to rescue Zhao—targeting the girl to exhaust that man before making his escape.
Now, however, he found himself facing an auxiliary Superpowered Individual whom he had never regarded seriously; their powers were not even on the same level.
As the door panel approached him, he merely raised his hand symbolically. A black ripple enveloped the door panel in mid-air. In an instant, he absorbed it completely.
"Suppress it!" Ten Thousand Steps pointed dramatically as if declaring himself supreme over all beneath heaven.
The door transformed into countless inscriptions, enveloping Hu Lao San. The dark void turned into an endless black mist, slowly dissipating, while the inscriptions became pure white, dazzlingly bright. The whiteness was breathtaking.
Light surrounded Hu Lao San.
"Success! The purification of the inscriptions is complete!" Ten Thousand Steps muttered words that Zheng Yifan couldn't comprehend, his state resembling that of a madman.
It was a madness belonging to a certain kind of obsession, a masterpiece born from the fusion of inspiration and art, even he himself did not know when he had experienced this inspiration again.
But it didn't matter. At this moment, he had succeeded; the inscriptions enveloped Hu Lao San, and the power was calm and peaceful. There was no hint of aggression; even the injuries Hu Lao San had sustained earlier were completely smoothed out. All his hidden ailments gradually began to heal.
"Hahaha! Is this your way of healing me? You're too funny; do you want me to die from guilt?" Hu Lao San suddenly burst into laughter at the person across from him. Ten Thousand Steps' method of attack finally reassured him; it had no offensive power at all and even healed his injuries and hidden ailments.
"This is meant to use the pure Vital Energy of this realm to heal all impure wounds. When the idea first struck me, it was also intended to deal with zombies. However, it seems that the positive Light Element has undergone some mutation, capable of blending with the target's own power and simultaneously determining and eliminating all powers that do not belong to the positive Light Element," Ten Thousand Steps said with a smile as he looked at Hu Lao San.
Zheng Yifan also noticed the change; Hu Lao San was transforming. Once shrouded in shadows, he now appeared increasingly sacred and inviolable. His skin and veins were being purified, turning almost completely pure white.
His veins were nearly invisible.
More seriously, his superpower leaned towards darkness; yet the power of the inscriptions completely reversed or altered that darkness, using the power of the inscriptions themselves to cover and transform it.
The positive Light Element sounded grand and righteous, but witnessing it in reality evoked a sense of dread. It was an absolute Light Element, devoid of any impurities; Hu Lao San's body was becoming nearly transparent.
"I!" Before he could say anything further, large patches of light began to spread across his body.
"Ah!" It seemed only screams remained as the dark superpower within him collided with the positive Light Element, each altering the other. The clash of powers nearly shattered his strength; in just 0.001 seconds, light and dark elements had truly decided their victor. The forces of darkness gained the upper hand; after all, the power of the inscriptions was not all that Ten Thousand Steps possessed, nor was he purely an offensive superpowered individual—he had made no contributions in terms of attack power.
But now everything was different; an inscription formation had changed everything. The positive Light Element and dark superpower formed a rejection force that genuinely reduced his internal superpower to its lowest point.
Even an ordinary First-Level Esper at this moment would be a thousand times more powerful than Hu Lao San's superpower.
"No!" His loud and piercing scream remained futile as Zheng Yifan shook his head and walked toward the botanical garden.
The trembling Common Survivors behind him were all crouched on the ground, not daring to lift their heads. Above them, the Swallows continued to circle, their eyes fixed on the humans below. Zheng Yifan knew that the Swallows were actually focused on the sewer below, where Zombies had been lured by Hu Lao San. These Zombies were the true targets of the Swallows' attention, but everyone believed they were the ones being watched, and gradually, they convinced themselves of it.
"Thank you!" He waved to the Swallows in salute as Zheng Yifan officially entered the botanical garden.
Following him were the Huang Brothers and Ten Thousand Steps. Liu Hao was still staring blankly at Hu Lao San; he no longer needed to take action. Before he could even show off his prowess, Ten Thousand Steps had already taken care of everything himself.
Now this Fellow was sipping wine while looking at the Mutated Plants.
"Hurry up! Aren't we here for a feast? Once we reach an agreement in the botanical garden, let's find a place to enjoy a good meal together." Ten Thousand Steps was already drooling.
"Hey! We're here!"
While they were still talking, Zheng Yifan had already bypassed the main hall of the botanical garden. Of course, this was also the Ticket Booth; entering a botanical garden required a fee. Zheng Yifan thought it was ridiculous that there was no place that didn't cost money.
In any case, Zheng Yifan didn’t have to pay now and swaggered inside.
Around him sat Survivor after Survivor on the ground. They didn’t dare venture out; the Swallows in the sky were their only barrier preventing them from leaving. As soon as they tried to step outside, the Swallows would circle above their heads. Although nothing serious had ever happened, those Swallows often swooped down to snatch something away.
It seemed like it could be a person, but no one had ever truly seen it.
The most frightening thing in the world isn’t seeing something real; it’s hearing rumors about it. In this apocalypse, human lives were indeed cheap, but wealthy individuals were definitely not among them. They valued their lives; after all, they couldn’t just die without enjoying the wealth they had fought so hard to acquire.
Thus, most of those at the Ticket Booth were such people. They held Essence Fruits in their hands, waiting for someone to come and exchange them for Zombie Crystal s or large quantities of food.
They would take these supplies and continue waiting for new Essence Fruits to be produced by the Mutated Plants in the botanical garden so they could buy them back at low prices.
Some even owned their own Mutated Plants and hired Superpowered Individuals to capture Zombies using lassos and traps. Then they would slaughter them near their cultivated Mutated Plants or let some of their more aggressive Zombies do it themselves.
Ancheng already had a well-established trading system; these middlemen made their living through this hard work.
"Boss, we can trade for what we need outside. The places inside the botanical garden are strictly managed; almost every Mutated Plant has an owner." Huang Brothers pointed at those half-alive individuals nearby. The people outside didn’t dare enter the botanical garden, nor did they have the courage to leave. Although they weren’t completely out of food and water, it was getting close; their supplies wouldn’t last them much longer.
"Then what about those Essence Fruit of Trash? You know, the kind that almost guarantees you'll turn into a Zombie after eating them," Zheng Yifan gestured towards the F-Rank Essence Fruit.
Those fruits were the capital that had made Zheng Yifan rich.
"Of course, no one wants those. But Chief, what do you want them for? Once you use them, you'll almost certainly become a Zombie. It's just too much of a scam," Huang Brothers said, their faces filled with bitterness as they looked at Zheng Yifan.
"I want the Essence Fruit of Trash. What was the original price?" Zheng Yifan asked, instinctively uttering a pointless question.
Huang Brothers laughed at that moment.
"Price? Those things have no price. Are the pebbles on the street priced? Whoever picks them up owns them!"
Zheng Yifan smiled and extended a finger.
"How about we trade one pound of rice for ten Essence Fruit?" Zheng Yifan's smile was as sinister as a devil's.
But Huang Brothers still stared wide-eyed.
"Chief! If we do that, we'll be at a loss!" (To be continued...)
