Fear is contagious. The other girls watched in horror as their leader was ruthlessly trampled, with Liu Hao even being stomped on the ground and humiliated without mercy. A few women, panicked, wanted to retreat.
The Ice Queen also wanted to step back, but she worried that Zheng Yifan would chase them out, which could be detrimental to them. Zheng Yifan didn’t waste words; he simply looked at the woman in front of him and pressed down harder. Liu Hao groaned a few times on the ground, blood slowly trickling from the corner of his mouth.
Clearly, his internal organs had sustained serious injuries.
“What do you want to do?!”
The woman finally exploded, screaming desperately as if she had gone mad, tears streaming down her face like a torrential downpour, unable to hold back.
One drop… two drops… three drops.
Tears fell to the ground, as if they were striking at Liu Hao’s heart. He stretched out his hands with all his might, as if trying to block this beast named Zheng Yifan from entering the room and giving the other women a chance to escape.
“If I kill him, what will your future look like?”
Zheng Yifan asked coldly while secretly exerting pressure to keep Liu Hao from struggling too much on the ground. He wanted him to behave.
The Ice Queen then realized that Liu Hao's bow and arrows were not with him; they were in the hands of other women who were using them as toys.
What was once a powerful weapon in Liu Hao's hands had become nothing more than a toy for them, akin to cheap arrows used for fun at an amusement park.
“Why… why! What’s going on! Aren’t we friends?!”
Liu Hao finally screamed in despair, a grown man with tears streaming down his cheeks. He was choking up so much he could barely breathe.
He never imagined that Zheng Yifan could turn against him so suddenly. In his heart, there was only reverence and closeness towards Zheng Yifan; he seemed like someone who could protect the entire world. Now, this man had transformed into a demon—an incomprehensible demon.
All he knew was one thing: he could not die! Absolutely not! As long as he was alive, these women would be spared from a tragic fate, something he never wanted to witness.
“Liu Hao! Liu Hao! What good can you offer me? City Hunter? Are you a hunter? I see you as nothing but a pig—a foolish pig who thinks too highly of itself. A pig so stupid it can’t get any more foolish…”
Zheng Yifan's words were not yet finished when the girls by the noodle bowl shouted, "Catch that fat guy and take him hostage!"
The side window was completely open, and dozens of hands seemed ready to reach through at any moment.
"Fat guy! Don't hurt anyone!" Zheng Yifan shouted, implying that Ten Thousand Steps would surely understand.
This shout, however, only drew a cold laugh from the icy beauty. Yet, thinking of her current predicament, she quickly composed herself. Then came a chorus of wails, and from the corner of her eye, she saw that Ten Thousand Steps had actually flown out through the window frame.
Then she heard a loud burst of laughter.
"Hahaha... Don't worry, Boss! I'm just playing with them; you can keep resting!" Ten Thousand Steps chewed on some chips vigorously, swallowing them whole as he moved among the women.
All the icy beauty could hear next were cries, wails, and desperate sobs.
One by one, the girls seemed to fall over themselves. Then she saw Ten Thousand Steps' plump figure dancing among the crowd of girls as if it were all just a playful romp. Ten Thousand Steps was clearly having a blast.
In less than a minute, Ten Thousand Steps flew back in through the window. For him, those snacks were likely more appealing than the beautiful women.
Dozens of women lay sprawled on the ground, their eyes swollen and red from crying. Clearly, Ten Thousand Steps showed no mercy; he was quite rough!
"Alright! This farce should come to an end. Let me introduce myself; my name is Zheng Yifan, and I am the leader of a Gathering Place... Oh! No, I should soon be the leader of two Gathering Places," Zheng Yifan said casually. The women fell silent, sitting on the ground obediently listening to Zheng Yifan.
"Now then, we should be able to have a proper discussion outside," Zheng Yifan said as he led the snack-filled Ten Thousand Steps into the cramped room for an expanded meeting. When it came to philosophy, Zheng Yifan realized that in the Underground Mall, it was entirely ruled by women. Liu Hao's status as a guardian and protector was extremely low; he was like a doorman and bodyguard rolled into one—essentially a lackey for everything.
Philosophy did not resemble a refuge; rather, it felt more like an Eden. If they truly had an abundance of food, Zheng Yifan could hardly complain or question it.
However, they had no such conditions; everything here was seized by Liu Hao from others. If that were all there was to it, it might be acceptable. More often than not, Liu Hao fought for survival against others in life-and-death struggles while snatching food from the jaws of danger. Those big shots from other Gathering Places treated him like fodder; after all, he was merely a Second-Stage Esper. The big shots simply had no interest in dealing with a fly.
While Liu Hao wandered through the city scavenging food from Zombies and battling other humans for survival—sometimes just for a bag of instant noodles—these women sat back and enjoyed their spoils.
When Liu Hao returned to what should have been a warm home, battered and bruised, he felt no warmth, tenderness, or care. Instead, he was completely ignored.
Zheng Yifan's experience made everything clear. The girls who had once transformed into giant pandas showed no acknowledgment of Liu Hao; not a single person greeted him, nor did anyone leave a kind word or even a simple inquiry about his well-being.
It would have sufficed with just four words: "You’ve worked hard!"
Originally, this had nothing to do with Zheng Yifan. He was merely trying to provide Xu Jie with a stable environment and find a pawn he could control. Zheng Yifan had to resolve the concerns surrounding this Fellow. He could grasp this Fellow's weakness, compelling him to stay close to Xu Jie. Perhaps one day, he might be swayed by her charm and fully return to his Gathering Place. But that was not possible now; some underhanded tactics were necessary.
However, Zheng Yifan had no intention of serving these ungrateful women. Thus, he decided to teach them a lesson—a theory class on the rules of the Apocalyptic World.
There were thirty-two of them—proud girls from before the apocalypse, stunning enough to make men wish to bow at their feet.
Now, each of them had become like pandas, sitting obediently in two rows with dark circles under their eyes. The Ice Queen sat at the front, next to Liu Hao, whose lips were stained with blood and who looked like a frostbitten eggplant.
Zheng Yifan reclined on the large bed facing the door, the soft mattress still holding the lingering scent of beauty that was intoxicating.
Ten Thousand Steps finally kept quiet, stuffing two pieces of candy into his mouth while holding a Submachine Gun in hand, watching them intently. Anyone who dared to move would be met with his cold glare.
The girls had just been mercilessly beaten by Ten Thousand Steps and immediately became obedient upon meeting his gaze.
In truth, they had no idea that Ten Thousand Steps had shown them mercy; even at his worst, he was a Third-Stage Esper. His powerful superpowers gave him physical abilities far beyond any athlete in the Post-Apocalypse. Despite his bulky frame, even Usain Bolt might struggle to match his speed.
"First of all, I need to know your identities. Please speak up, you foolish comrades," Zheng Yifan gestured for Liu Hao to take the floor. Liu Hao glared at Zheng Yifan in anger but was met with Zheng Yifan's fierce and crazed gaze filled with murderous intent. Goosebumps rose on his skin as he involuntarily shivered and stood up obediently.
These girls were all students from a university majoring in aviation services. They had come together as a group to travel to Ancheng, this Tourist City, accompanied by their beautiful teacher.
Coincidentally, Liu Hao had also come to this city alone for sightseeing and had encountered these beauties—he had even taken an interest in their teacher.
That ice-cold beauty named Bai Shuying.
Liu Hao, who had never had a fixed goal for his activities, casually took to performing archery in front of others.
When the apocalypse arrived and Vital Energy began to erode the world, most of the hundred-plus members of their team turned into Zombies. Chaos erupted as many girls were paralyzed with fear, their legs giving way as they were devoured alive by the Zombies.
Whether it was misfortune or something else, the mutation rate in Ancheng, a city known for its lush greenery, was not as high as in other cities. The total mutation rate was only about fifty percent, and most of those who mutated were typically weaker students. As a result, the Zombies found plenty of food and became satiated. Perhaps drawn by the scent of more blood, they chose to follow other Zombie groups into the city center instead of attacking the remaining survivors.
The remaining girls were dragged out by Liu Hao, who had been awakened by the commotion.
There were thirty-two students in total, and along with Bai Shuying, whom Liu Hao was particularly concerned about, he feared that the Zombies might return for another attack. After taking down several nearby Zombies from a distance and learning their weaknesses, Liu Hao managed to commandeer a bus and began his escape with these women.
The closer they got to densely populated areas, the more Zombies appeared. Initially, they ran toward the outskirts of the city, but it was even louder outside. People were picking up firearms and crazily slaughtering each other. Even the stationed troops and armed police had gone completely mad; trapped by Thermal Power, escaping seemed utterly impossible.
If one wanted to survive in Ancheng, it would only serve as a feast for the Zombies—like headless flies darting around in a frantic struggle for survival within the city.
Along the way, some Survivors they encountered began to reveal their primal instincts that one would dare not exhibit in a post-apocalyptic world. Humanity was completely extinguished within them.
Although Liu Hao ultimately eliminated these threats with his vigilance, the girls were left traumatized and no longer trusted men—including Liu Hao, who had been protecting them.
Liu Hao wandered through the streets of the city with them, living day by day in uncertainty.
Fortunately, at the onset of the apocalypse, Zombies were incredibly weak; any person who set aside their fear could easily kill a Zombie with a simple iron rod.
During their time wandering, he had killed Zombies and beasts—some newly mutated creatures that hadn’t fully transformed—and even Survivors who attempted to take advantage of them. The more people he killed, the more he faced rejection from these women.
If it weren't for Liu Hao's genuine feelings for Bai Shuying, he might have left long ago. However, he persevered through hardships until he learned from another Survivor about an excellent hiding place where the women could live carefree lives while he ventured out to gather supplies—hoping that Bai Shuying would eventually be moved by his efforts and come to like him.
Liu Hao laid everything bare during his recounting of events; tears streamed down his face several times as he spoke. At that moment, he truly felt unrestrained and no longer cared about how others perceived him. He understood that Zheng Yifan had not killed him yet because there must be some ulterior motive behind it.
He tried his best to pull Bai Shuying behind him. As for the other girls, he would take care of them as much as he could, but if he couldn't, he would have to give up.
"You! How can you do this? Isn't it a man's duty to protect women? So you stayed among us just to take advantage of me!"
Bai Shuying was furious. She never expected Liu Hao to be such a person. In her eyes, he had transformed from a somewhat reliable man into a completely despicable one. The girls behind her chattered angrily, glaring at Liu Hao and attacking him with words that made him feel like Zhu Bajie looking into a mirror—unpleasant both inside and out.
"Bang!" Zheng Yifan slammed his Adamantium Shield onto the ground, leaving a deep pit several centimeters wide.
The scene fell silent in an instant. Zheng Yifan's cold gaze swept from left to right across the faces of the panicked women, sending shivers down their spines like a biting winter wind.
Finally, Zheng Yifan's gaze landed on Bai Shuying's face.
Liu Hao was terrified, his face pale as he scrambled on all fours to get in front of Bai Shuying, using his not-so-wide body to shield her almost completely.
Bai Shuying did not push him away; instead, she curled up behind Liu Hao, trembling.
"Throw this foolish idiot into the fountain to cool off!"
Zheng Yifan shouted angrily. Ten Thousand Steps waddled over with his large belly swaying, stepping up to Liu Hao first. He threw a punch that landed hard in Liu Hao's abdomen, causing a wave of pain that made him instinctively curl up. Then Ten Thousand Steps grabbed him by the collar and dragged him away like trash.
Without his bow and arrows, Liu Hao felt like a toothless dog without claws, helplessly allowing Ten Thousand Steps to drag him along. He attempted to resist several times, but each effort was easily avoided by Ten Thousand Steps' bulky frame, resulting in even harsher beatings. (To be continued...)
