The cleanup of the Overpass went smoothly, without any unexpected complications. If there had been any issues dealing with the First-Level Zombie Zheng Yifan, it would have been quite embarrassing.
The battle ended as Zheng Yifan swept through the area. In the end, Ten Thousand Steps and his team were unable to hold their side of the bridge; it was Zheng Yifan who resolved the situation by eliminating all the Zombies, allowing them to break through the blockade.
Below, the Survivors were left in silence, an eerie quiet as they watched Zheng Yifan lead his group through the breach into the southern forest.
That forest was a remnant of the Post-Apocalypse, and beyond it lay an Industrial Park. Inside, only the least polluting sectors of Light Industry remained. Any factory that could potentially harm Ancheng's Tourism Industry would face severe repercussions from local authorities, who insisted on a well-maintained Tourism Industry.
While chaos still reigned behind them, Zheng Yifan had already stepped into the woods.
From his very first step, he sensed a chilling atmosphere that made him uncomfortable, as if he had entered into a conspiracy.
Yes! A conspiracy. Only such veiled malice could send shivers down Zheng Yifan's spine. Even the Avatar of the Believers dared not retreat; they could only continue to absorb his Superpower.
He estimated he could hold on for just over an hour. Zheng Yifan silently calculated the time; he could summon the Avatar of the Believers for only three hours, not counting his last resort. Among all his followers, one was particularly loyal and devout.
That was Xu Jie, the girl whom Zheng Yifan had saved. She was his most devoted follower, her pure soul residing within his heart and within his sea of Superpower. In his mind, she existed in another dimension where all Power of Faith resided.
It was this ace up his sleeve that allowed Zheng Yifan to boldly enter the forest without hesitation. Otherwise, he would truly need to avoid entering any woods. The most terrifying things in this apocalypse lurked within forests.
Those were the Post-Apocalypse animals, beasts born from the end times—creatures that true humans could hardly contend with.
As he stepped into the woods, each footfall crunched softly on leaves beneath him. The forest was filled with numerous Mutated Plants; unfortunately, these plants had not received enough nourishment from Zombies to produce even a single Essence Fruit. Stepping on fallen branches from last year’s leaves and looking up, he saw that the blazing sun was obscured by dense branches overhead. The ground was covered with tree limbs and foliage.
The road had long since disappeared. Zheng Yifan had dispatched the Avatar of the Believers ahead, who were nothing less than warriors clearing the path for him.
Was it really something a leader of a Gathering Place like Zheng Yifan should be doing? If it were just one person, he could manage, but now with the Avatar of the Believers at his disposal, he intended to make full use of them.
Those avatars were merely condensed Superpower; they wouldn’t truly die and wouldn’t affect the main body at all.
Such a convenient resource had to be utilized to its fullest. After all, Zheng Yifan had already pushed them to their limits; he was just short of having the Avatar of the Believers carry him on a palanquin for a good nap.
However, Zheng Yifan couldn’t afford to be careless. His body remained slightly leaned forward, always ready to attack, with the Adamantium Shield prepared on his left arm to block any damage. Even the Silver Spear was swirling with specks of Vital Energy.
Behind him, the Scientists led by Ten Thousand Steps followed quietly like obedient chicks. They still owed Zheng Yifan a meal. From now until the second night, they would have no food. They had to dig for their own sustenance; these Scientists might excel in research, but when it came to survival in the wild...
Please! Just kill them. Forget about surviving in the wild; they wouldn’t even know which wild vegetables were edible or which plants were poisonous. If they were sent mushroom foraging, they’d surely end up with a basket full of colorful mushrooms that could poison everyone.
Only Ten Thousand Steps seemed somewhat competent in this regard. Despite being a foodie, he had an insatiable curiosity about anything that could be eaten without killing him. Most delicious foods never escaped Ten Thousand Steps' grasp.
Just like now, while everyone else worried about food shortages, this Fellow was chewing on something unknown, making sounds that suggested he wasn’t about to starve anytime soon.
Regardless, Zheng Yifan had to protect these scientists. He had sent at least half of his more than a hundred Avatar of the Believers to encircle them completely. He positioned himself in front; as long as there was any movement, his Adamantium Shield would be ready to defend or counterattack immediately.
After walking for another few minutes, Zheng Yifan's sense of alertness intensified. The feeling of being watched was not new to him; he had faced it before. But this time, it wasn’t humans he was up against—it was beasts, Killing beasts that thrived in this strange jungle environment far better than humans did.
Suddenly, a loud crack echoed as a stick broke. Zheng Yifan quickly raised his hand, halting everyone's advance.
Many branches had snapped just moments ago, but Zheng Yifan had never reacted this strongly before. This time, he stared ahead with a sense of urgency.
The sound did not come from the branches they had stepped on, nor was it made by the Avatar of the Believers. The Avatar of the Believers didn't even have a physical form to cause such disturbances.
Focusing intently on what lay ahead, Zheng Yifan could hear his own heartbeat. All the Avatars of the Believers slowly spread out, scanning for signs of enemies. Even the branches were crawling with Avatars, forming a three-dimensional defensive layout. This was the only way Zheng Yifan could relax 1% of his mind; the remaining 99% remained tense. In this jungle, although it was merely a forest, passing through would lead to a wide road. Following that road would take him near the Industrial Park, where he could access the highway and continue toward the Hope Gathering Place.
This forest was peculiar. Before the apocalypse, it had merely been a greenbelt along the sides of the road. However, after the end times began, the once beautiful mountains on either side had merged into a dense thicket, with only a central area where the trees were relatively short. The trees on both sides had grown wildly into a primitive jungle, making passage impossible.
To clear a path in the future, this forest would need to be completely cut down.
For now, Zheng Yifan no longer cared about it; whether those Survivors lived or died was none of his concern. His priority was to protect himself and his people.
Ahead of him, a target had appeared. It resembled a tiger but lacked the fierce markings on its forehead. Its face was rather cute, and its claws were fully extended.
"Is that a tiger? Or a cat?" Wan Bosheng behind him exclaimed, revealing the truth: it was just a cat—a very ordinary house cat from the Post-Apocalypse, or perhaps even a wild cat.
When this cat appeared, Zheng Yifan's hair stood on end; he was in a state of heightened alertness, ready to strike at any moment.
In Ancheng, he felt like a powerful warrior in a place where weaklings roamed freely. He had never truly had an opportunity to unleash his full strength until now. This cat seemed just right for him—at least Fourth Stage in power—and with the advantage of terrain, it could provide him with an equal match.
However, Zheng Yifan's Superpower was unique; he had yet to fully harness its potential. He craved an exhilarating battle.
"Meow!" Just as Zheng Yifan prepared for combat, the wild cat let out a howl. Its identity was revealed—it was just a cat, one that anyone in the Post-Apocalypse could easily defeat.
But now, it is the Grim Reaper of the apocalypse. The most formidable Grim Reaper for Ancheng and the Survivors.
The Fourth Stage, an existence that has never appeared in Ancheng, the most powerful presence.
Here, the vast majority are First-Level Zombies. Only in the most core areas might there be Three to Four Level Zombies, and as for Fifth Level, that is out of the question; this barren land cannot nurture a Fifth-Level Powerhouse.
The Silver Spear is firmly gripped in hand. Slowly pushing forward, all power is concentrated ahead, with killing intent surging, advancing with all the strength possessed, accompanied by fifty of the strongest Avatars of the Believers.
These followers are Superpowered Individuals themselves, possessing certain abilities. Although they cannot use their respective Superpowers after becoming Avatars of the Believers, they can inherit Zheng Yifan's strength, and that is enough.
Zheng Yifan still has his strongest move, not a matter of speed but that incomplete technique, Wildfire Spreading. It truly ignites Vital Energy.
For one person to use Wildfire Spreading as a thrust is a lethal strike.
But what about those fifty?
No one has seen it before, but today will surely be an eye-opener.
The fifty Avatars of the Believers move as if they were one person, their target completely unified, all their strength focused on a single point.
Different paths lead to the same destination; all power originates from one source, emanating from different directions but ultimately converging into one.
Fifty streams of Wildfire Spreading power converge at the final point. There lies where Zheng Yifan strikes.
The Silver Spear shone with a brilliance never seen before, a light that represented its first true display of power. The radiance absorbed everything around it, plunging the surroundings into an endless abyss of darkness, leaving only the glow of the Silver Spear. It was a force unlike any other, an unprecedented strength. What did it mean for Zheng Yifan to unleash the accumulated power of each attack through the Silver Spear? It was an overwhelming might, unstoppable and invincible.
The killing blow emerged, nearly impossible to block.
A chilling roar echoed, devoid of any feline cries. The light transformed into countless flames, resembling the most ferocious bomb from a post-apocalyptic world—a pure Cloud Bomb—releasing all its energy in a single direction.
Explosion! It could hardly be called an explosion; all the power condensed into a single point without being released, instead continuing to compress, compressing further until it could compress no more, at which point it was fully unleashed.
The unstoppable force obliterated the wildcat's head. Nearby, a leaf floated by on the wind, slowly descending in front of Zheng Yifan, drifting aimlessly. As the leaf landed on the wildcat's head, it coincided with the moment Zheng Yifan's power erupted.
The shockwave seemed to barely stir the leaf, lifting it half a meter into the air before gently letting it fall again.
Below, the wildcat's head had completely vanished as if it had never existed in this world, leaving behind a translucent Crystal—its essence. This was akin to the Zombie Crystal but differed vastly in form and energy.
Zheng Yifan stepped forward and examined it closely before storing it in his Storage Space. All that remained was the carcass of the wildcat.
"Can this thing... be eaten?" Ten Thousand Steps stammered from behind. It seemed he was still fixated on food even at such a moment.
"Eaten? Let's focus on what's ahead first. That attack was a one-time use; what comes next is the real test," Zheng Yifan replied as he gazed deeper into the forest.
One by one, lights resembling bulbs began to appear among the trees—bright yet terrifying. They were eyes, eyes filled with hatred.
The evolved beasts had developed their most basic emotions. The wildcat that Zheng Yifan had slain was akin to their siblings. Oh dear, it was precisely time for them to seek vengeance against Zheng Yifan.
"Meow!" The piercing cry echoed throughout the forest, and they dared only to traverse the central area of this forest, a rare refuge formed by chance in the face of the apocalypse. The sides were dominated by established powers; venturing there would mean certain death.
The powerful beasts of the post-apocalyptic world had only grown stronger. If it weren't for the formidable beasts that claimed these mountain peaks, keeping other creatures at bay, a large-scale war among beasts would have likely erupted by now. They adhered to the jungle law: survival of the fittest.
The central position? Sorry, no beast would covet it. Those massive creatures would fear that a single roll could devastate many plants in the forest.
This was their habitat, one they would never destroy. Unlike humans, who exploited everything they could, they were merely a part of the jungle, always protecting this land that sustained them.
"Meow!" One by one, wildcats emerged from the thicket.
One, two, three... seven.
Seven wildcats slowly revealed themselves, their eyes filled with hatred. Each cat was quite large, their bodies marred with numerous wounds. The wildcat killed by Zheng Yifan seemed like the younger brother among them; though not the strongest, he was the most beloved.
Now he had been killed by this human with a single glance, without even a chance for rescue. They could only watch helplessly as blood pooled on the ground and as that precious core, more cherished than their own lives, was taken by the man before them and tucked away into his clothing.
Perhaps he intended to make jewelry? In their underdeveloped minds, this was the only conclusion they could draw from their fleeting memories of the post-apocalypse.
Facing Zheng Yifan, they felt as if they were confronting a poacher; once battle commenced, it would be a fight to the death. (To be continued...)
