The arrival of the three Cat-like Beings brought a new vitality to the entire team. A group of scientists, who usually barely spoke, found themselves chatting more, especially the chubby one known as Ten Thousand Steps, who was naturally talkative and could exchange a few words with Zheng Yifan. Otherwise, Zheng Yifan would surely have suffocated from boredom.
This time, Zheng Yifan truly returned to the real world, but he had barely spent half an hour there before coming back. He returned with an impressive haul of milk, goat's milk, and various bottles, almost as if he had swept through the store.
The sight of Zheng Yifan driving a flashy sports car left the clerks dumbfounded. Fortunately, he was in France; if he had been back home, he wouldn't have dared to buy Fresh Milk for the three adorable Cat-like Beings. Who knew what might be mixed in? If something happened to those three after drinking it, the consequences would be dire.
During his brief time away, Zheng Yifan heard the most about the Zombie Virus—a virus described similarly to those in biohazard scenarios. It was contagious, but Zombies moved slowly and could be dealt with using firearms. However, the mutations of these Zombies were quite bizarre; many people suddenly transformed under surveillance without any warning or direct contact with infected individuals. They inexplicably became Zombies.
Panic spread across the globe, especially in countries like China, France, the United States, Canada, and parts of Africa where infections were severe.
Fortunately, this strange virus seemed to have no effect on beasts; there were no powerful Zombies like those seen in movies.
Nonetheless, this situation had already triggered global panic to an alarming degree. In Saudi Arabia, it was reported that a member of the royal family had turned into a Zombie. This escalated worldwide fear to its peak.
Zheng Yifan understood where these changes came from—they were linked to his own ascension to Fifth Level. He still carried the Golden Character Card, and his enhanced Superpower was not just an ordinary Overlord but a Supreme Sovereign—much more powerful and consuming even greater energy.
Several weak points in the Time-Space Barrier had been severely weakened. Zheng Yifan needed to invest a significant amount of Zombie Crystal s to restore it.
It might take tens of millions or even billions of Zombie Crystal s to ensure the Time-Space Barrier's recovery. Zheng Yifan also needed Zombie Crystal s to unlock Superpower Technology from the First Vitality Era. One could not have both fish and bear's paws; Zheng Yifan felt helpless.
There was one advantage to the weakening of the Time-Space Barrier: Zheng Yifan's influence could expand further. The real world had become one ruled by military power; nations began openly showcasing their military parades, and large numbers of troops were officially deployed to battle against Zombies.
Protecting civilians was their duty; eliminating Zombies was their responsibility.
Berry left a note on Zheng Yifan's desk detailing the plans for Hope Group's Security Company. Kais had officially activated its execution. This was Hope Group's largest plan and its top priority. The world's best assassins and mercenaries would receive invitations and undergo fierce competition to determine which mercenaries would be hired. Their current mission was to be contracted by various countries to rescue people and eliminate Zombies during battles—tasks that regular troops were unwilling to undertake.
Dealing with Zombies required someone willing to risk their life. Domestic soldiers could participate in such high-intensity combat; however, wealthier Americans, British citizens, and certain Eastern Europeans as well as those from Dubai, Vatican City, and Saudi Arabia preferred hiring these mercenaries.
They fought fiercely and selflessly; they executed missions at lightning speed and excelled at rescuing personnel.
Zheng Yifan silently praised Berry for her actions. Until he repaired the Time-Space Barrier, mercenaries would remain one of the best—and most dangerous—professions. They earned salaries that were once hard to come by just for completing certain missions.
It should be noted that each formidable soldier from America cost around hundreds of thousands of dollars in training expenses. They did not want their elite warriors thrown into battles against monsters where even a minor injury could lead them to become those terrifying Zombies—a reality that all soldiers found difficult to face.
Zheng Yifan marked a check on the list. He then left behind 100 bottles of A-Level Essence for Berry to distribute freely.
However, Zheng Yifan did not realize that these powerful items could grant Superpowers after use. In reality, the minuscule amount of Vital Energy in this world could only produce Zombies, and those would be the lowest tier, not even Second-Level Zombies would appear, let alone Superpowered Individuals. The total amount of Vital Energy used by Superpowered Individuals is several times greater than that of Zombies.
Zheng Yifan explained to Berry that these 100 bottles of A-Level Essence were immunity potions against the Zombie Virus, intended for his parents, siblings, and the highest-ranking members of his group. After using them, they would be immune to the Zombie Virus. Naturally, those women with whom he had ambiguous relationships might also receive this precious opportunity.
After all, no one knew if they would be the next to mutate.
With milk and a bottle in hand, Zheng Yifan embarked on his journey back into the Apocalyptic World. The weight of the real world in his heart had diminished significantly; here he possessed a large corporation. If he wished to enjoy it, he could curl up here for a lifetime and bask in endless wealth and glory.
But he couldn't do that. Ever since the establishment of Hope Gathering Place, he realized he belonged to the Apocalyptic World—a world filled with slaughter. The peaceful life was far behind him; he bore the hope of survival for hundreds of billions of people. He understood that his luck carried all the hopes of the First Vitality Era, with all resources from the Yellow Emperor Tribe focused on him. He absolutely could not afford to lose.
Or perhaps, dancing on the edge of a blade in the Apocalyptic World had already seeped into his bones, making him feel out of place in the real world. He would always be that fierce leader rather than just a corporate president in reality.
Upon entering the Apocalyptic World, Zheng Yifan's first task was to feed a few kittens. This task seemed easy but proved difficult; Zheng Yifan had never fed a child before—this was his first time. He could only ensure that the milk was neither too hot nor too cold before forcing it into the kittens' mouths.
Then came the next one. Perhaps it was because their parents were all mutated beasts or perhaps they were simply clever; within seconds, the kittens learned how to use the bottle and drink milk by themselves.
Zheng Yifan didn't have to worry at all.
They held their own bottles and suckled on the milk.
Watching them were Ten Thousand Steps and a group of scientists, their mouths filled with the scent of milk. They looked at those bottles as if they were about to snatch them away.
"Look at you all! Drinking like greedy cats! Is it really necessary?" Zheng Yifan casually pulled out a box of milk from his backpack and tossed it on the ground, signaling them to help themselves.
That was something he had prepared in advance; French milk was far richer than what was available domestically. Zheng Yifan had fallen in love with it after just a few sips—it was nothing like that watery stuff that needed thickeners to sell.
More than a dozen scientists, including Ten Thousand Steps, pounced on the milk like rabid dogs, each grabbing a pack for themselves. The rest was completely taken over by Ten Thousand Steps, who stuffed everything into his personal backpack.
Many looked at Zheng Yifan's backpack as if it were a divine artifact; it contained everything imaginable—food and supplies—and now even boxes of milk. How could they not be astonished?
However, despite their surprise, they attributed all the anomalies to the Superpower, completely neglecting to explore what the Superpower actually was and how Zheng Yifan achieved it.
Even a few scientists who understood French pretended not to notice the dates and text on the packaging, simply savoring the milk. It was a rare fragrance in the apocalypse.
Zheng Yifan also drank two packs of milk. After replenishing some hydration, he waited for the cats to finish drinking before gathering a few of them in his arms and tossing the empty bottles into his backpack. He continued onward.
Ahead lay an expanse of wasteland emerging from the forest, with decent greenery on both sides. However, large areas were filled with unfinished buildings. There were even abandoned factories; it was unclear whether the Boss had fled or been captured. In any case, most of them remained incomplete, giving the entire street a suffocating atmosphere.
Fortunately, there were no Zombies around. Or perhaps very few; this area was almost deserted. In the Post-Apocalypse, few ventured here, and scattered vehicles lined the streets—those belonging to residents who lived in this desolate place.
Living in this urban area would be quite inconvenient if every vehicle was needed; even grocery shopping would require walking several kilometers. Without a car at home, one would have to walk. It would be exhausting.
Although technology had advanced, the Apocalyptic World lacked the sci-fi convenience of sidewalks that could transport one to any corner of the city in minutes.
"Leader, ahead is the Industrial Park. There are many factories inside with valuable resources. Should we take a look? At least we could get some Treasure watches from the Phoenix Watch Factory!" The scientists were not hermits; they had their own interests, such as the Phoenix Watch that cost hundreds of thousands in the Post-Apocalypse.
Zheng Yifan nodded. He was more interested in the equipment inside; moreover, there were several laboratories located within that Industrial Park. Who knew if any scientists had survived there or if there were Research facilities that Zheng Yifan could pack up and take with him?
"Target ahead: Industrial Park. You all are inventors and creators; are there any Research bases or laboratories here? Introduce them to me," Zheng Yifan instructed, prompting enthusiastic responses.
Their understanding of Research equipment far surpassed Zheng Yifan's knowledge. Several large Physics Laboratories, Biological Research Institutes, Crop Research Institutes, and Materials Research Laboratories made Zheng Yifan's eyes light up with excitement.
However, after learning the reasons behind their presence there, Zheng Yifan felt utterly speechless. The reason these research institutes were located here was entirely due to the older scientists who led their construction; their bodies could no longer bear harsh conditions. If they were forced to live in other cities with worse environments, their frail bodies might not survive. But this place was different; it was a Tourist City with excellent conditions that allowed them maximum comfort. Moreover, due to initial support from the government for the Industrial Park project, several laboratories were built here smoothly.
Over time, they had attracted many older scientists who brought their students along for project research.
Gradually, they became quite renowned domestically.
Hearing this absurd reason left Zheng Yifan helpless yet understanding towards those scientists.
They had dedicated their lives to Research. Staying up late was commonplace for them; forgetting meals often meant just a plate of vegetables.
After a lifetime of hard work, his body was naturally not in the best condition. Who wouldn't want a better environment to continue their research? They weren't done living yet; there were still many projects waiting to be developed.
With a clear target in mind, Zheng Yifan felt much lighter. His first objective was the factory of Phoenix Watch.
The factory wasn't particularly large; most of it was dedicated to assembly. Only the core components were produced in-house, as he didn't trust outsourcing to other manufacturers due to their low yield rates. The simpler parts were sourced from various factories.
However, having access to the core area of the factory and its technical documentation was sufficient. With these resources, Zheng Yifan could recreate the brilliance of Phoenix Watch in the real world.
What were Rolex and Patek Philippe compared to a watch that was decades ahead in craftsmanship and accuracy? More importantly, it surpassed decades of design philosophy. He could easily outshine them.
In the real world, no amount of money was too much for Zheng Yifan; he needed substantial funds to satisfy his ambitions.
It felt like his plans had already reached the mid-stage of development. The supply from the real world was no longer as crucial. However, greater and more daunting tasks awaited him, and support from the real world would be even more important in certain aspects.
On the road, Zheng Yifan dealt with scattered zombies. The cats seemed unafraid of them, especially Sanmao, who for some reason opened her eyes after spending a few moments in Zheng Yifan's arms. She then walked over to a fallen zombie and began licking its bodily fluids.
Zheng Yifan stared in astonishment but quickly came to terms with it. Mutated beasts fed on zombies; if the larger mutated beasts did so, then it made sense that his little companions would too.
What surprised Zheng Yifan was that it was Sanmao, this delinquent girl, who ventured out first for a meal, followed by Big Fur and Ermao. She looked every bit the delinquent girl as she hissed at her two brothers.
Zheng Yifan couldn't understand what she was saying, but her adorable antics made him and the dozen or so scientists burst into laughter. (To be continued...)
