Soaring in the sky was the eagle, while the one that fell was merely a hawk. Zheng Yifan felt like a dying hawk, slowly descending.
"Captain! The fuselage has sustained extensive damage and we need to make an emergency landing. We're still two thousand seven hundred meters from our destination, but the inertia of the aircraft is enough to carry us across the river. However, landing will be difficult; we must land in the river to succeed!" Ten Thousand Steps shouted anxiously from the cockpit.
The situation was dire. The fuselage had suffered severe damage, with numerous components broken.
In just a few dozen seconds, the aircraft would be completely useless!
"Not good! The left engine is failing due to bugs! It's irreparable!" reported the Superpowered Individual, checking the fuselage inside the cabin.
The damage to the aircraft was too severe; they couldn't hold on much longer. If they couldn't successfully land or evade those pesky bugs, they had no hope of survival.
That was their last hope.
"Activate the self-destruct mode! Success or failure hinges on this moment. If we can survive, that's victory enough. We don't need this equipment; as long as we live, that's all that matters! We can figure out how to build an engine ourselves!" Ten Thousand Steps resolutely flipped a switch on the control panel that had been sealed for so long. The bright red color and the skull emblem, drawn playfully during its creation, represented terror—a nightmare.
But now, they had to initiate the self-destruct mechanism themselves.
"Captain! We must survive!" Ten Thousand Steps declared firmly.
The river was a place where beasts roamed freely; even without zombies, many fish hunted in its waters. They felt like sheep thrown into a pack of wild animals, unable to resist.
"Initiate!"
"Initiate!"
"Survive!"
A determined expression was etched on each face. The cigar in their mouths was drawn down to the last puff, as if they never wanted to let it go.
"Whoosh!" It sounded as if something had shattered in the most crucial energy chamber of the cabin. All the energy began to surge violently, and the power-guided formation transformed. The Inscription seemed to come alive, spinning wildly; it was the result of meticulous collaboration among all the scientists. They had applied every Superpower Application onto this masterpiece of engineering.
This held their greatest confidence and contained their highest hopes for the entire aircraft.
Now, the core area began to release Superpower, an excessive release of Superpower. The parts of the fuselage that had been eaten away by insects gradually ignited with White Flame. This flame was formed from pure Vital Energy, devoid of any warmth yet carrying destructive power. Once it entered the bodies of the insects, it immediately devoured all their strength and flesh.
The frenzied flames burned with a tragic grandeur. It was the last soul of this aircraft, which had not yet surpassed half its lifespan from birth to demise.
It was the first true flying machine of the apocalypse, successfully shaped and defined. Unfortunately, it was now on the brink of death.
Ahead lay a vast river; just below the aircraft, a direct plunge would send it into the water. Ten Thousand Steps focused all their spirit on landing.
Without landing gear, the river became the best landing platform. There were no welcoming parties; they awaited war rather than ordinary reception.
They had to ensure that Zheng Yifan survived. Because Zheng Yifan was the leader of the entire Gathering Place. They needed to be responsible for all Survivors.
"Fight! Hold on! I will bring you all back!" Zheng Yifan made a resolute promise, wielding his Silver Spear like a propeller, shredding countless insects. Yet more insects surged forward relentlessly. There was simply no way to kill them all; they were empty overlords, while those cranes would retreat far away upon seeing the Swarm.
Zheng Yifan and his team were still inside the aircraft. They could not have as broad a perspective as the cranes did; more importantly, they lacked the survival experience that cranes had gained in this apocalyptic world.
The horror of those insects was something that cranes had long learned from their brief lives—the terror that many companions had paid for with their lives.
The aircraft, engulfed in white flames, plummeted toward the river like a falling meteor.
However, Ten Thousand Steps would never allow the plane to descend straight down without any maneuvering.
This was the middle section of the river, and even if it went down, the danger would still be immense. A steep dive was necessary. At the last moment, a sharp angle dive would allow the plane to glide over Sun Jiangmian, only then could it truly enter a gliding state and release its energy.
"Charge! Don't worry about me!" Zheng Yifan shouted angrily, hoping not only to escape this calamity himself but also to lead everyone else to safety.
The immense power of Superpower was unleashed to its fullest extent, a force that could only be described as overwhelming waves. Zheng Yifan released all his Superpower along with every method at his disposal.
Without the power of Fortune, he summoned the Avatar of the Believers. The Avatar appeared in mid-air and unleashed the final Wildfire Spreading before vanishing.
If the believers were not nearby, their power would be significantly weakened. Zheng Yifan could clearly feel the Power of Faith within him rapidly depleting, with no replenishment in sight.
He also lacked the Power of Faith from the Hope Gathering Place; he needed to truly see those Survivors and feel their need from their hearts.
Only then could he truly harness that power.
He did not know how strong things would become in the future, but right now he felt weak enough to chill Zheng Yifan's heart. Only by becoming stronger could the Attract Power of Faith have a broader range.
Now, in this critical moment, Zheng Yifan had no means left to respond; he could only place his hopes on Ten Thousand Steps, this Fellow.
He was a trustworthy Fellow, though sometimes a bit greedy for drink and food; his mouth never seemed to stop chewing. Yet Zheng Yifan believed in him; he could handle it well.
"Hold on!" Ten Thousand Steps shouted hoarsely from inside the cockpit, all his strength focused on this final struggle. The plane was descending as if it were about to crash.
All he needed to do was dive down towards the river before truly plunging into it, then pull up the nose of the plane and let it glide.
All the power was nearly burned out; that force was not infinite. It was a massive, rapid depletion of the Zombie Crystal's energy to execute the final counterattack.
Now, the Swarm had been shaken off to a distance. Those insects, for some reason, dared not approach the river closely.
They only circled in the air, while those that had already attached themselves to the aircraft continued to gnaw at it.
Flames! The White Flame was fading.
The aircraft, with its power completely contracted, was heading towards its end. Even the black paint on its body was gradually weakening. Once that power diminished, the aircraft would truly be on its last legs.
"Bang!" The fuselage collided with the Frozen Surface for the first time and was immediately bounced back. The impact sent a large spray of clear water into the air.
Then, a multitude of creatures from the riverbed surged out from beneath the Frozen Surface.
However, their target was not Zheng Yifan or their aircraft. To them, this plane was inconsequential; they were focused on the Swarm in midair.
It was as if they were bait. A large number of Swarm insects were devoured by fish leaping into the air.
These fish had various methods of consuming the insects. A giant Octopus over ten meters long was the most terrifying; it exposed its entire body above the Frozen Surface, its massive tentacles waving in midair. The Swarm seemed to be drawn in like a hurricane, a large group being pulled down and completely swallowed.
More fish leaped into the air to catch insects.
The most frightening were dozens of grotesque fish that resembled post-apocalyptic mollusks. Their immense power left Zheng Yifan in shock.
A powerful wave of sound echoed through the air, the haunting melody of the spiral resonating. The frequency was so peculiar that it was impossible to discern.
As the intense sound waves spread through the atmosphere, millions, even billions of insects were left dazed and disoriented, plummeting into the water.
A massive whirlpool appeared on the Frozen Surface, swirling with all the water before being drawn into a gaping maw within the river.
Zheng Yifan had no idea who the owner of this monstrous mouth was, but it was undoubtedly the true ruler of the river—an entity of unfathomable strength.
He could only brace himself as the aircraft repeatedly struck against Sun Jiangmian, gradually reducing the impact.
Ahead, Ten Thousand Steps had managed to stabilize the plane. Fortunately, it was a wooden aircraft. No matter what happened, its essence remained unchanged; its buoyancy and fatigue resistance were unmatched by any metal.
The force was slowly dissipated as the wooden structure trembled with each jolt.
However, even so, the aircraft could not be saved. Zheng Yifan had already prepared for this. Standing atop it, he watched as Ten Thousand Steps gradually steadied the plane, gliding towards the flood control dam by the riverbank. That would be their final destination. Yet Zheng Yifan had little hope; a slowing aircraft could not reach that far.
Suddenly, a fish from the river leaped into the air, heading straight for Zheng Yifan.
He stood out clearly on the aircraft, completely exposed without any cover.
Though these fish were not particularly intelligent and had short memories, instinct told them that this Fellow before them was a delicious meal.
That was enough.
One by one, the fish launched themselves desperately towards him, only to be sent flying back by the force of impact, pierced by Zheng Yifan's Silver Spear and then smashed back into the river by his Adamantium Shield.
No fish has a good ending.
"Hey! You bunch of misfits, come on!" Zheng Yifan shouted angrily, roaring with his last burst of wildness.
Everything before him seemed to stretch out. Only the sound of the wind remained, as the fish were slowly left behind, his body surpassing everything, conquering death.
In front of him, Ten Thousand Steps of Emotion began to brighten up, no longer shrouded in the clouds of death.
They did it. They truly completed the dive and successfully executed the landing phase.
No one expected that the modified Wooden Airplane would be so powerful; even though it was riddled with holes, it could still land.
"Creak!" Just as they relaxed, about a hundred meters from the shore, cracks began to appear extensively on the fuselage.
This was the backlash from exceeding the limits of Vital Energy usage, causing internal cracks in the wooden material. No one could stop it; they could only hope to endure until the end.
Zheng Yifan even began to silently pray, hoping he could successfully hold on.
The sound of cracking grew louder. The flood control dam was now right in front of them. In the past, Zheng Yifan could almost leap back effortlessly. Even now he could do it, but he couldn't bear to make the cruel decision to abandon those Scientists who had fought for him.
He didn't want to lose these talents, these people who had already shown some loyalty to him.
Zheng Yifan needed them to create the future of Hope Gathering Place.
"Hold on!" Zheng Yifan shouted loudly. One by one, Avatars of the Believers appeared behind the plane, using Adamantium Shields to push the damaged fuselage forward again and again.
80 meters! The tail section was already mostly damaged.
60 meters! The fuselage began to show signs of damage, and the scientists inside were visible from the outside.
40 meters! The scientists in the cabin reluctantly tossed away their cigars, which had already been reduced to stubs, and took a few deep breaths, waiting for their final fate to arrive.
0 meters, the plane had almost stopped moving, only advancing a few meters when Zheng Yifan's Avatar of the Believers appeared.
10 meters! The plane had completely come to a halt, its fuselage entirely disintegrated, even the wooden structure just floating aimlessly on Sun Jiangmian.
There was still a distance of ten meters ahead; Zheng Yifan could leap across in a single bound, as could Ten Thousand Steps. However, those scientists could barely manage four or five meters at most; after all, they were merely First-Level Espers.
"Whoosh!"
A large number of fish began to gather and swim towards them, creatures that typically wouldn’t venture close to the shore.
Fish have a memory span of only three seconds, so they wouldn’t remember that the shore could be dangerous. But now it was different; with the apocalypse upon them, their fear of the Post-Apocalypse had returned. Thus, they rarely approached the shore.
Now, lured by food, they advanced once more.
Humans die for wealth, birds die for food, and fish are no exception. They often fell victim to human bait during the Post-Apocalypse.
At this moment, Zheng Yifan and his companions seemed like fat bait attracting them.
"Get your asses onshore!" Zheng Yifan shouted angrily. Standing on the largest piece of debris, he swung an entire wing towards Sun Jiangmian, which was several meters away.
With a swift motion, he grabbed a scientist with his left hand and hurled him toward the platform.
The others watched this unfold with wide eyes, excitement gleaming in their expressions.
No one wanted to die; they still had bright futures waiting for them. Even in the apocalypse, scientists had lucrative jobs and generous salaries.
They were fearless, yet they cherished their lives even more.
Ten Thousand Steps was the first to take the lead and jump across. Then he helped each scientist one by one. As soon as they reached the wing section, he would exert himself again to assist the scientists in getting safely ashore.
However, the fish in the water were multiplying rapidly. Zheng Yifan was far more enticing than bait.
Superpowered Individual, that was the feast of the apocalypse. The fish usually had no chance to taste it; they merely reacted instinctively to Zheng Yifan, recognizing their appealing flavor.
Otherwise, even the colossal creatures of the sea would surely come over for a bite. (To be continued...)
