Five minutes rewind, above Fortress Jiang, Zheng Yifan surveyed the scene, committing to memory every Mutated Zombie he could see.
After all, they were Mutated Zombies, and their bizarre appearances were not worth mentioning; the most significant aspect was that most of them were quite large.
Just like the Zombie about two thousand meters ahead, towering at five or six meters tall. Its head looked intimidating, but Zheng Yifan knew it was just a common Mutated Zombie. Once a formidable enemy, it was now merely a target.
Scanning the horde of Zombies, Zheng Yifan focused on those he had never seen before and the Leader Zombie.
Taking down the Leader Zombie would cause a large number of Zombies to lose control. Eliminating that Mutated Zombie would be pointless; a few Third-Stage Espers from Hope Gathering Place could handle it effortlessly.
"Leader!" Behind him, his male secretary Sun Jiang handed over a document. It was a message from the Left Guard, meant to be relayed with utmost speed. Who knew when this often neurotic leader would disappear again?
They couldn't find him anyway, so they had to use this method; any matter needed reporting.
"What's up there? Stay with me!"
Zheng Yifan continued searching for undercover Zombies. The ordinary Mutated Zombies no longer attracted his attention; his gaze was fixed on those with unusual appearances. Such Zombies often brought unexpected surprises.
"Report, Leader. The document states that in the left front area of the main battlefield, a Zombie has been discovered. Its strength exceeds Second Tier but has not reached Third Stage. No Zombie Crystal detected; suspected to be controlled by a Mutated Zombie..." Sun Jiang faithfully recited all the information without adding any personal thoughts.
This included the Fire Elemental Espers charging forward to take down this Mutated Zombie, even considering a mutually destructive backup plan—the Nine Thunderfire Formation was also documented.
"Good Fellow! That name is indeed flashy and cool! Naming it like that makes it seem like they're playing an Online Game!" Zheng Yifan chuckled at the formation's name, his first reaction being amusement.
In this apocalypse, there were no powerful formations for assault; only various applications of Superpowers existed.
However, within the Hope Gathering Place, some incredibly cool names for techniques had begun to circulate. There were even individuals who felt it necessary to shout out the names of their moves before executing them, as for them, that was the true essence of being impressive.
Zheng Yifan never expected that among his main forces, there would be those who shared this enthusiasm.
When he saw the final introduction, he fell silent. It described the teacher's understanding of this formation and the ultimate way to execute it.
It was a complete expenditure of all one’s strength, unleashing the most powerful force, to the point where one could no longer care for their own body; it was a move that resulted in mutual destruction.
The center position was the most likely place to survive, as long as the person there could withstand the powers of all Superpowered Individuals.
It was akin to the transmission of power in reality. All strength would be conveyed to the person at the center, with everyone else choosing death, cultivating a master for just a second. This master would then eliminate the formidable Zombie.
There was only this one chance to strike, yet it resonated with power. The force exceeding Fifth Level could destroy that Zombie.
It was almost like the explosion of a nuclear weapon. However, in the end, it would create a true powerhouse.
Zheng Yifan understood that this kind of power could almost be deemed taboo, yet they had still managed to create it.
"I must save them; anyone willing to sacrifice their life for Hope Gathering Place is worthy of respect. They are the most loyal warriors of Hope Gathering Place, and their mission should be to eliminate those vile Zombies rather than perish alongside them." Zheng Yifan adjusted his weapons and gazed into the distance, scanning the battlefield with his eyes.
Suddenly, he saw flames shooting out from the fortress, rushing forward at a speed that far surpassed that of Post-Apocalypse vehicles. The sparks raining down on the Zombies quickly extinguished; their targets were not those foolish Low-Level Zombies but rather the true Mutated Zombies, likely some of the toughest adversaries on this battlefield.
Already hundreds or even thousands had emerged, and with some other Zombie gangs busy around them, they were absolutely unbeatable.
Only by capturing the thief can one capture the king; eliminating that Mutated Zombie is essential, or the others will meet their demise or transform into something else.
What Zheng Yifan wanted to do was save those who were truly prepared to sacrifice themselves.
With a leap, he soared into the air.
In his hand was the Adamantium Shield, which had once again changed its form. The Power of Faith enhanced the capabilities of the Adamantium Shield, allowing Zheng Yifan to ride it in mid-air and use the jetting airflow to fly several hundred meters before landing again.
Below him were even more Zombies. The warriors were engaged in fierce combat with them; holding their ground on the city walls was one thing, but killing Zombies was another matter entirely.
They were all Superpowered Individuals, not ordinary people, and their methods were beyond the comprehension of regular humans. With a simple jump, they could already be soaring through the air, readying incendiary grenades and throwing them with all their might. The burning bottles would be carried far by the wind's force, and if someone mastered a Superpower that countered gravity, they could launch those incendiary bottles hundreds of meters away, raining them down upon the Zombies.
No incendiary bottle ever missed its target. Their accuracy was unmatched by Post-Apocalypse soldiers; their strength surpassed that of Post-Apocalypse soldiers, and even their learning abilities were beyond what ordinary soldiers could achieve.
These were the warriors of a new era; they had left behind the soldiers of peacetime far behind.
At the beginning of the apocalypse, those soldiers could still wield power and authority, but now they too had to learn new things to survive in this damned world.
It was all just for survival.
Zheng Yifan soared beneath the blue sky while ahead of him, a Fire Elemental Esper had already landed on the ground. Zheng Yifan then saw a strange large hole on the ground; clearly, the Hive below was not at Third Stage or Fourth Stage.
It was at Fifth Level power. It was a Fifth Level Mutated Zombie, but this Zombie looked and felt entirely different; it was meant to enhance other Zombies. If likened to a character class from a game called League of Legends in the real world, this one was a support type.
The supporting Zombie was entirely dedicated to assisting other Zombies. Currently, he was still gathering strength, able only to facilitate the evolution of Second-Level Zombies. However, once he consumed enough, he could even enable the evolution of Fourth Stage and Fifth Level Zombies, allowing them to surpass their original levels by a significant margin, capable of crushing opponents of the same rank.
Unfortunately, the fate of a support character appearing alone was already sealed with a tragic ending.
Ahead, the Fire Elemental Esper had prepared the Nine Thunderfire Formation, a spell that completely compressed fire energy to create an explosion. The vessel for this explosion was the person at the center—Sun Yang, who had once guided Zheng Yifan.
Now, he would experience the sensation of becoming a god for a second before facing death. Zheng Yifan estimated the survival rate of this plan.
5%.
Not even 5%, the odds were minuscule, yet there remained a sliver of hope.
“Stop! You are warriors of the Hope Gathering Place. I hope you do not throw your lives away in vain; you still need to contribute to the Gathering Place in the future!” Zheng Yifan shouted loudly, his Adamantium Shield generating a powerful Vital Energy Flow.
This Vital Energy Flow could disperse the opposing Vital Energy at the Gathering Place, preventing them from using their last resort.
Meanwhile, his Silver Spear had already begun its assault. The power it wielded was overwhelming, and as a Fifth-Level Esper, Zheng Yifan’s Silver Spear was no longer ordinary; it now possessed the strength cultivated through In Calamity.
With one thrust, it pierced through the massive fabric of energy.
“Grrr!” The strange roar sent shivers down everyone’s spine.
The ground-level Zombies began to writhe fiercely, causing the entire ground to tremble violently.
Zheng Yifan had no idea how big this creature was, but its size was definitely not small. Now he could see that this Zombie lived underground most of the time, only emerging during battles to allow other Zombies to enter its massive maw and devour them.
It would then continue to hide, waiting for the Zombie to successfully advance before unleashing those Zombies to fight for it.
This was a typical support-type Zombie that relied on others, yet it possessed immense power. Its greatest asset was its numbers; as long as it remained hidden, it could infinitely amass troops.
In the game, as long as the military base survived, it could continuously spawn troops until overwhelming the enemy with sheer numbers.
Just like now, after seeing Zheng Yifan, the surrounding Zombies seemed to go berserk, with a massive number of them turning back to gather around their leader.
Not just hundreds or thousands, but tens of thousands of Second-Level Zombies suddenly emerged from the horde. These Zombies were incredibly powerful, nearly reaching Third Stage strength. If they were allowed to attack the Hope Gathering Place, it would truly be doomed.
However, Zheng Yifan was already beside this colossal creature, and surprisingly, it wasn't moving fast at all. It crawled along like a giant worm, slowly inching forward.
The ground beneath it was being pushed down in large chunks as it moved. It could only manage about a meter in a minute at best.
This seemingly non-combative Fellow was, however, the strongest Zombie on the battlefield so far.
Unfortunately for it, its days were numbered because Zheng Yifan had already decided to put an end to its wicked existence. (To be continued...)
