The battlefield spanned several kilometers, and such a vast area could not possibly relay information directly from behind. The Zombies were not that foolish; they must have had a method to communicate. As for advancing, that was out of the question. The Zombies were right at the front lines, and they would never distinguish between their own kind and humans. They only recognized Zombies as their allies and humans as food.
Acting purely on instinct—that was what a Zombie was. If they all possessed formidable intelligence, humanity wouldn't need to fight them; they could simply surrender.
As he carefully observed the battlefield, Zheng Yifan noticed some peculiar Zombies—those that had transformed from Survivors. He had taken down a few earlier but hadn't paid much attention to them. After their deaths, they turned into pools of green Zombie Fluid, making it impossible to determine their nature.
However, now Zheng Yifan could clearly see a large bulge on their backs.
That Big Sphere resembled the back of a post-apocalyptic creature, severely bent and surrounded by countless writhing Tentacles. It looked utterly disgusting.
Yet, these Zombies were weak, even weaker than ordinary First-Level Zombies, which was why Zheng Yifan hadn't noticed them before. But now, as he began to examine how these Zombies communicated, he discovered the root of the problem.
Even the Tentacle Monster ahead no longer held his interest; the Avatar of the Believers was nearly eradicated. The Tentacle Monster would soon find itself in front of Zheng Yifan, seeking its own demise.
His primary task now was to determine whether those communicating Zombies were indeed these strange ones.
Zombies surrounded him on all sides; there was no room for carelessness. The coarse sand beneath his feet felt slightly painful. Although it was daytime, all he could see besides the blue sky and white clouds were the green clouds rising above—only Zombies remained.
Endless Zombies ruled this apocalyptic world. Zheng Yifan couldn't ignore them; other living beings had no chance of survival.
A war with only one victor is the hardest to win. He shook off the green Zombie Fluid that had stained his pants and continued to scrutinize the horde of Zombies.
Wherever they went, there would surely be no sign of those bizarre Zombies nearby; only from a great distance could their figures be seen.
The curled bodies were not searching for opportunities to attack but were constantly retreating, looking for positions to hide.
In the real world, there used to be a saying: "With a handy tool in hand, standing in the storm, switching hands from left to right. If the right hand cannot break through..."
The description illustrates how poor the signal was back then; it was no longer about the signal finding people, but rather people had to actively seek out the signal.
This Zombie is in such a situation, constantly shifting its body in search of the signal's location. As long as it can transmit the signal, it jumps up and down immediately, its Tentacle swaying bizarrely behind it.
The surrounding Zombies seem to have received an order, altering their paths of advance.
Despite the crowding, the Zombies still move in an orderly manner. Zheng Yifan can only glance at them sideways, truly impressed. Training these emotionless creatures into such a state must have taken a tremendous amount of time and effort.
"Boss! Should I take out that Zombie?" Wu Yingzhou whispered beside Zheng Yifan. His current manifestation was a massacre against the Zombies coming from both directions; First Level Zombies posed no challenge at all. They weren't even worthy opponents.
As for Shi Laonian, this Fellow had been intently focused on the distant Tentacle Monster, as if gazing at twenty crates of fine wine and aged spirits from the art world.
"Calm down. Among us, only you... and Li Li are suitable for this mission. However, I trust you a bit more," Zheng Yifan said, glancing at Li Li, who seemed to be on vacation. He felt frustrated; he really didn't know what to make of this woman. Her combat ability was undeniably fierce, yet she always maintained a rather domineering appearance during battles, seemingly afraid of revealing herself.
But upon reflection, it made sense. The Zombies had very little vision. Even if one ran around naked, the Zombies probably wouldn’t mind much; they would just rush over and take a few bites.
"Boss! Just wait for my good news!" Wu Yingzhou said with a smile as he looked toward the distant Wire Zombie. His body swayed lightly, and a manifestation appeared directly several dozen meters away. This manifestation waved its hands and eliminated all nearby Zombies while his body glided through the horde like a fish.
As the Zombies advanced, they were almost pushing against each other with little space to maneuver, yet Wu Yingzhou managed to squeeze through.
Not only that, but his manifestation also continuously employed various techniques to push the Zombies aside amidst the crowding.
With just about a hundred meters left to the Zombie, his manifestation locked onto the Wire Zombie and surged forward at incredible speed. The surrounding Zombies seemed to be swept away like a tidal wave as he moved with a speed that was almost comparable to normal running.
This was already remarkably fast; after all, he was surrounded by Zombies and had no opportunity for rapid movement. Achieving such speed within a horde of Zombies was exceedingly rare.
It was as if that tentacled Wire Zombie moved slowly among the horde of Zombies, but it seemed to emit a kind of Signal that caused the Zombies to gradually disperse, clearing a path for it.
This was all in vain, as Wu Yingzhou's avatar trembled the ground beneath him. He leaped into the air, spinning 60 degrees and striking a pose before his Old Buddy's avatar landed on the Wire Zombie.
Then came the act of pulling out a Carrot. Wu Yingzhou surprisingly used the momentum in mid-air to yank the Wire Zombie out, tossing it into the sky.
What effect does a powerful avatar throwing something have? Zheng Yifan had no idea before, but now he understood. It was like swinging a shot put; the Zombie had almost no room to move in mid-air and was hurled seventy or eighty meters away by Wu Yingzhou's avatar. Then that avatar vanished, only for another one to appear at a distance, catching the Wire Zombie again.
If it were just about killing it, a single shot from Li Li or a punch from Wu Yingzhou would suffice. However, capturing it alive was not so simple.
Wu Yingzhou was clearly doing well; the Wire Zombie in the air flailed its arms and emitted a sound akin to a Zombie Leader's roar. However, the sound waves were weakened to an unknown extent, lacking that fierce power—just an ordinary shout.
From this sound alone, Zheng Yifan could ascertain that Tiger Mouth Military Base possessed remarkable scientific technology.
It was likely derived from the Zombie technology of the First Vitality Era and the Chiyou Tribe. Otherwise, if they had developed it themselves, it would have been impossible to complete such research in just two years.
Every scientific advancement takes time; Zheng Yifan himself had yet to truly redeem even an ordinary Soul Crystal Activator.
The main reason for this was resource issues. If Tiger Mouth Military Base wanted to obtain this technology from Chiyou Tribe—or even just part of the potion—they would have to offer substantial benefits for a successful trade.
Zheng Yifan did not know what price they had paid; he only knew that the Zombie slowly flying toward him resembled a large platter of meat laid out before him, just waiting for him to feast upon it.
It wasn't that he had any perverse tendencies; rather, he was simply curious about what powers this Zombie possessed.
Although Zheng Yifan wasn't particularly suited for analysis, he was well-informed and had a strong understanding of Vital Energy. As long as he observed this Zombie carefully for a while, he would surely uncover what exactly it was!
Zheng Yifan stomped on the Wire Zombie beneath his foot. The surrounding Ordinary Zombies began to stir, as if driven mad by the desire to rescue the Wire Zombie. A horde of Zombies relentlessly crashed against Zheng Yifan's small formation.
The Zombies on the ground twisted their bodies, their mouths roaring incessantly. This was a unique skill of the Zombie Leader.
Only when this skill matured could the Zombie Leader possess self-preservation abilities; without it, they lacked even the means to protect themselves.
"Hey! I know you can understand me. Next, I might have to dismember you, but don’t worry; once my research is complete, I’ll send you off to hell a little earlier to enjoy your rest."
Indeed, entering hell now could be considered a blessing. If they continued to live, their fate would ultimately be death—perhaps in a few moments or maybe in two or three months. Regardless, their time was running short.
Although Zheng Yifan had already extinguished the will of that Zombie, it was still being manipulated by others. Even without the intelligence of its original form, it could still act on its own.
Just like now, it was emitting various Signals, trying to summon its brethren and other minions for assistance.
In the Zombie World, deception did not exist; as long as there was a demand, if a Zombie could fulfill it, it would certainly do so.
Low-Level Zombies surged against Zheng Yifan's team like waves crashing against the shore. Initially, these Zombies only advanced and would attack when they encountered other Zombies.
None of them bore wounds; they were not yet in a frenzy.
However, that changed when the Wire Zombie issued commands, causing a mass of nearby Zombies to crowd in.
Compared to those proper Zombie Leaders, this one was clearly lacking. The Zombie Leader wouldn’t care about these lower-tier Zombies; however, he had no choice but to command the most basic ones. Even with all their effort, these minions couldn’t break through to Zheng Yifan’s side—Wu Yingzhou could handle it himself.
His Superpower functioned differently from Zheng Yifan’s. The more Zheng Yifan used his Superpower, the faster it depleted. Wu Yingzhou’s Superpower only consumed energy once during summoning; afterward, he merely needed a small amount of Superpower to maintain it.
His greatest challenge lay in continuously controlling the Dharma forms during battle, akin to a person multitasking with four minds.
In contrast, as long as Zheng Yifan summoned his Avatar of the Believers, it would suffice.
It was clear at a glance who was superior and who was inferior. Moreover, Zheng Yifan could also endow himself with the Power of Faith, and with tens of thousands at his disposal, crushing Wu Yingzhou would be no problem at all.
However, in terms of quality, Zheng Yifan fell significantly short.
Despite Wu Yingzhou only enhancing one Dharma form with each advancement to the First Level, he had made considerable progress in his understanding and application of martial arts as well.
Now he resembled a martial artist, possessing extraordinary combat skills and capable of executing many powerful techniques to their fullest extent.
Otherwise, he wouldn't be able to navigate among the Zombies so effortlessly.
"First, it can be confirmed that this Fellow can control those ordinary Zombies."
"Second, this Fellow can emit roars that approach the frequency of a Zombie Leader, though its lethality is several hundred times weaker, likely discarded during the replication process."
"Third, this Wire Zombie clearly possesses the ability to transmit signals. Although it only controls a few hundred Zombies directly, the number of Zombies controlled indirectly through signal transmission is vastly greater."
Zheng Yifan had no intention of continuing his exploration; he simply shot down the Wire Zombie and meticulously searched the equipment for loot.
He had already confiscated the equipment used to control Zombies; now he aimed to seize this device that controlled other Zombies as well.
However, what happened next was enough to astonish Zheng Yifan. The process of the Zombie transforming into Zombie Fluid was incredibly slow, allowing Zheng Yifan to observe the decomposition closely.
First, the limbs gradually turned into green Zombie Fluid, seeping into the ground. There was no sign of struggle, but then things took a terrifying turn. Zheng Yifan began to understand how the Fellow at Tiger Mouth Military Base had managed it.
As the Zombie's body decomposed, the head, limbs, and flesh were the first to break down, followed by the internal organs.
However, the Zombie before him had no internal organs. Its abdomen housed an entire Zombie head—the head of the Leader Zombie—fixed in place with blood vessels supporting its survival.
This was akin to having a Leader Zombie living inside its body! The roar must have come from the Zombie head within, but after passing through the throat and chest cavity, its power had diminished significantly.
The Zombie head continued to glare at Zheng Yifan, its mouth moving incessantly, but alas, no sound emerged.
This was expected; without a trachea, what could it possibly roar? Earlier, it could still make noise because the head of this Zombie Leader shared the same trachea with the Wire Zombie.
But now it was different; the Wire Zombie was dead, leaving only the head of the Zombie Leader.
Its strength could not be sustained for much longer. Zheng Yifan watched helplessly as its face began to melt away slowly.
This was because the entire body of the Wire Zombie had nearly dissolved completely, except for a mechanical device on its back. Zheng Yifan noticed something unusual there.
It was almost entirely composed of mechanical equipment, with many incomprehensible devices installed on its central nervous system, utilizing the Wire Zombie's brain as a processor for control. (To be continued...)
