Descending vertically from mid-air without any deceleration, the speed was astonishing. Zheng Yifan had even used the Adamantium Shield to accelerate further, pushing his velocity to the extreme. Behind him, the sounds of Uncle Jie’s wooden cannon fired repeatedly, yet not a single shot found its mark.
Naturally, if any of those shots had hit Zheng Yifan, it would have been an instant kill—there was no room for luck.
Zheng Yifan's luck was relative; if misfortune struck, it would be a disaster for him. As he looked ahead at the river, he felt truly torn.
The Old Turtle in the river was no easy opponent. Although it was merely a Sixth Tier creature, its strength in the water was undoubtedly at Seventh Level standards. Moreover, all the beasts of the Ushumar Mountains were its backing.
Like a guard dog, the Old Turtle protected the gateway to the Ushumar Mountains. If this Old Turtle were to be eliminated, it would be like poking a hornet's nest. Although Jie had no idea what formidable beasts resided in the Ushumar Mountains, he had heard Chiyou mention that with the Second Energy Arrival, Eighth Level beasts would emerge, and Seventh Level beasts would inevitably appear in larger mountain ranges.
If it were the Third Vital Energy Descend, it would signal an era of beast extinction, much like the Second Vitality Era. However, while humanity would become completely zombified, most beasts would transform into Zombie Beasts, with only a few surviving to gain even greater power. Some beasts might even explore the realm of gods—Ninth Level.
All signs pointed to humanity approaching its doom while those beasts rose as new stars with formidable combat abilities. What made them even more enviable was their inherently strong bodies and their immunity to the Zombie Virus; some could even consume it.
Once upon a time, the Chiyou Tribe sought to study beast genes to acquire such abilities. Unfortunately, they failed.
Was it a feeling of helplessness?
Jie felt somewhat daunted by this river; charging in would surely summon powerful beasts. The world of beasts did not tolerate human intrusion.
As for Zheng Yifan and his companions, they likely didn’t seem like a significant threat in the eyes of these beasts—they were merely struggling to survive and could be ignored. However, Jie at Seventh Level was different; his existence posed a threat to the Ushumar Mountains.
“Old Turtle! Your master has business to attend to; step aside quickly! I’ll deal with this fellow and leave immediately!” With no other choice, he had to make his intentions clear.
Suddenly, a voice echoed from beneath the water.
It was heavy and seemed to pull at everyone’s bodies as if something was tugging at them.
Rough yet powerful, those who heard this voice could only describe it as such; if it truly belonged to something, it was definitely not human.
The sound, if it were made by a human, would surely shatter their vocal cords. It was a low-frequency sound that human vocal cords could hardly produce.
The Frozen Surface gradually stirred, and Zheng Yifan found himself unable to move in the water, as if something were trapping him.
Feeling carefully, Zheng Yifan understood. It was the power of the water; what was usually gentle had turned fierce, so fierce that it was unbearable.
The first thing to emerge from the river was a palm-sized turtle shell. It slowly expanded, and within just a few seconds, it had grown to resemble an island in the middle of the river. This was merely the upper part; the true body lay beneath, with its head slowly stretching out.
If it had to be a turtle, then so be it.
This was a turtle's head, but upon closer inspection, it resembled a dragon turtle from legends. Two horn-like appendages on top of its head swayed continuously, and blood dripped from them.
The fresh blood mingled with the river, causing numerous fish to rush forward in a frenzy.
"My Old Buddy is still alive! You needn't worry about anything. Just now, you promised me that all territory from the Ushumar Mountains down would belong to our Usumar clan and would not be invaded. Yet here you are, encroaching on our land! Get out! Otherwise, you will face the wrath of Bear King Bag!" Old Turtle said calmly. When he mentioned Bag's name, pride filled his voice.
However, Jie felt a lingering fear. That was a Seventh Level Bear King, possessing immense strength and intelligence. He had once caught a distant glimpse and dared not approach again. Although both were Seventh Level beings, they were worlds apart; that Bear King could easily crush him with a single swipe.
"Even if the Bear King comes, I’m not afraid! This child fell into the river due to my attack; naturally, it's my trophy! We must adhere to the rules! How can we act recklessly?" Jie's voice trembled noticeably.
"Hahaha! Fellow, you must be joking! There are no such rules in this world. Those are merely set by you humans. If there is to be a rule at all, it is this: survival of the fittest; strength is the only rule. In Ushumar Mountains, Bear King Bag is the rule!" Old Turtle glared at Jie defiantly while remaining submerged in the water.
As long as he was in the river, he feared no enemy of Seventh Level strength.
"Old Turtle, don’t refuse a toast only to be forced to drink a penalty! Even your Bear King cannot withstand the wrath of Chiyou Clan Leader. Do not let Chiyou Clan Leader come personally to discuss matters with you!" Jie revealed his last trump card.
This was his final resort; fighting? Not a chance—this was their territory. Before he could finish, a horde of beasts would surround him.
As for giving up?
He had never considered it. The strength of this Fellow was clearly much greater than he had anticipated. At this age, Huangdi was not nearly as powerful, was he?
This young man was a menace, the kind that needed to be eliminated. If he were allowed to continue living, who knew how far he could develop? He might even be able to take him down.
As for being comparable to the Chiyou Clan Leader, he had never thought of that; Chiyou was like a god in his mind.
Old Turtle lowered his head thoughtfully, as if contemplating something. The moss on his mottled head cracked with a few lines, the wrinkles formed by years of immobility slightly shifting. His shell was impressively large. With overwhelming strength, he was invincible in the river. Moreover, that hard shell was not something just anyone could break.
Splash! Splash!
On the Frozen Surface, droplets of water sprayed out, creating ripples on the clear water, which was already showing signs of murkiness. The fish swam nervously, fearing they were too far from Old Turtle.
Gradually emerging on the Frozen Surface was Zheng Yifan's figure. His body was trapped in the water, completely immobilized; only when the Frozen Surface was broken could he regain control of his body.
However, at that moment, he no longer dared to move.
On the riverbank stood Uncle Jie, whose demeanor clearly indicated he harbored murderous intent.
Old Turtle beside him seemed much friendlier, but Zheng Yifan knew this was definitely not good news.
Because Zheng Yifan had no ties with them; he could only hope that Uncle Jie and Old Turtle had old grudges against each other.
"I really like this young man's Gathering Place. People often come to feed our Zombies and frequently lure them over to fatten up the fish. Unlike you all, who turn every human into a Zombie just for slaughter! Slaughter! In the end, do you want us all to starve?" Old Turtle declared dramatically.
Zheng Yifan felt as if everything was collapsing around him. It turned out that Old Turtle's reason for protecting him was solely because the river served as the gateway to Hope Gathering Place. With people from Hope Gathering Place as bait, most of Jiang Yidong's Zombies would gather in this once desolate area, allowing them to feast well.
Zombie, in the mouths of beasts, was like a hamburger, each one rich and delicious. Just one bite, and the tender meat was like the outer bun, while the juices inside were the filling.
Perhaps for the beasts, it truly was a delicacy. Zheng Yifan had no idea what it tasted like and didn't want to know; he only knew that his life might be spared.
The Heart that had flown away finally returned. Looking around, the entire battlefield was still in chaos, but the rhythm of the battle had been completely taken over by the Superpowered Individuals of Hope Gathering Place.
The attacks from the Zombies had temporarily ceased; the real fight would come later. However, the Zombies from Tiger Mouth Military Base were nowhere to be seen, and those ordinary Zombies seemed to charge forward aimlessly like headless chickens.
They were dazed and lacked any unified organization, as if the Zombie Leaders had suddenly stopped directing the battle. Or perhaps those Zombie Leaders were focused on the changes happening across the river.
Whoever eliminated whom would influence the outcome of the battle. The Zombie Leaders were not fools; they could analyze such situations. If Old Turtle died, they could charge across Jiang Grand Bridge without worry. If Jie fell, they would be finished. Rushing across the river could only rely on numbers in hopes of slaughtering their way through before continuing south to devour those delicious humans.
But reality was often cruel. On the river, Old Turtle looked at Zheng Yifan beside him. With a casual swipe of his massive claw, a wave surged forth, carrying him across to the other side.
The atmosphere between him and Jie was somewhat tense; neither knew what the other intended to do.
"You must hand this person over to me. His future is limitless. Anyone who might obstruct the patriarch's ambitions must die. If he still possesses that kind of Superpower from Huangdi, I can let him advance freely; he will never reach that level."
"But now, this Fellow's Superpower has actually mutated. In this case, he must be eliminated. Even if I owe Huangdi a favor, I will seek forgiveness when I reach Endless Netherworld!"
Jie's words declared that negotiations had broken down. (To be continued...)
