Where exactly does a madman live? Zheng Yifan had always been unaware; in his mind, a madman was just that silly girl who rummaged through the trash bins at his doorstep, grinning foolishly at everyone.
Now, he understood that the true madness lay in the dwelling before him, nestled deep within the mountains. The cave hung halfway up the slope, resembling a place where Stone Age people might have lived—dilapidated and chaotic, with scraps of discarded packaging scattered about.
No one ventured into the wilderness to pay attention to this madman until Zheng Yifan arrived. They were oblivious to who this recently bankrupt lunatic truly was.
He was one of the finest scientists from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, a nominee for several Nobel Prizes in Physics and Chemistry. His scientific research projects boasted over 170 patents, all of which had been sold off after his bankruptcy. This was because this madman had poured billions of dollars into his research projects throughout his life.
In his mind, money was worthless—merely a means to complete his experiments. If it couldn't be exchanged for research materials, it was all garbage to him.
Just pieces of paper adorned with Franklin's sketches.
And his research? The world dared not touch it; it was a Restricted Area—an absolute Restricted Area—capable of bankrupting even the richest person on Earth. Who would dare approach it? Even governments only dared to dabble in it, throwing all of Earth's resources into it without any guarantee of results.
Zheng Yifan dared, but there was only one Zheng Yifan in the world. Now that he knew the madman's address, he had naturally come to find him! He trudged through muddy terrain, scaled high mountains, and crossed rivers. After traversing half of America, Zheng Yifan arrived at this unknown peak, stepping into the territory of that madman.
Or perhaps it was a place he had seized; the government had long since lost interest in him. In this remote forest, it might take a hundred years before anyone passed through again. If they tried to evict him, it would make headlines.
A Nobel Prize nominee in Physics and Chemistry being forced out by the government? Anyone daring to publish such news would surely face dire consequences!
"This must be the place!" Zheng Yifan looked up at what resembled a cave inhabited by primitive people. It was truly hard to believe—a great scientist lived here? It was almost unimaginable; in his mind, scientists were eccentric geniuses residing in laboratories. Had anyone ever seen a scientific madman living in a primitive cave without any research equipment?
"Of course. This is the place with the largest concentration of elements that can turn people into zombies; where he lives is right at the center," Berry said, pointing at the cave suspended in mid-air with an expression of disbelief.
In order to study this substance, he actually chose to live here. Didn't he know he could turn into a Zombie? With such a high concentration, Berry dared not approach; the area above and below were completely different.
"Just stay here. When you achieve something remarkable, I will give you an unexpected gift. At least then you won't have to fear turning into a Zombie anymore!" Zheng Yifan said with a smile.
Not turning into a Zombie? Does that mean there is a serum to solve the Mutated Zombie problem in this world? That would be something insane. Before turning into a Zombie, there is a period of clarity; with that buffer time, injecting it could save one's life. Surely the wealthy would be willing to pay generously for it. If there is anything they value most in this world, it is not money or family. It is their own lives!
"Don't get any strange ideas; this can only be used by you. It might also be a benefit for our company's top executives, but it will definitely not be sold. You must keep it under wraps; if anyone leaks it, I wouldn't mind the world losing one more person." As Zheng Yifan spoke, a cold breeze seemed to pass through, sending shivers down Berry's spine.
Before them, the cave was suspended several meters in the air, requiring climbing equipment to reach it. Berry had already prepared everything; several bodyguards were ready with the climbing gear.
"No need! I will personally meet this madman, but I need someone to translate for me. Jessica, come with me!" Zheng Yifan called out Jessica's name.
Before Jessica could react, Zheng Yifan had already wrapped his arms around her slender waist and leaped into the air, floating for a few moments before pushing off with his legs and flying toward the cave entrance.
Stunned—completely stunned—the cave before him exceeded Zheng Yifan's imagination. He had once envisioned an old man or a dilapidated house inside this cave.
What lay ahead was truly the lair of a scientific madman—no doubt about it!
Zheng Yifan never expected such a place to exist; it completely surpassed reality and the technological level of the real world. He had seen laboratories in the Apocalyptic World that were at this level, but those lacked some specialized equipment found here.
"Is anyone there?" Zheng Yifan shouted loudly, while Jessica trembled beside him translating. She couldn't believe that Zheng Yifan could jump over ten meters high—he was like a superhero! What does being a superhero mean? American superheroes are now embodied in Zheng Yifan, who had just jumped over ten meters effortlessly.
"Boss!" Jessica exclaimed.
"Call me husband! What 'Boss'? When it's just the two of us, never say that. From now on, you are my woman, and there's nothing shameful about it when we go out," Zheng Yifan said with a serious tone, his expression carrying a hint of coldness.
"Yes! Hu... Husband!" Jessica never expected Zheng Yifan would ask her to call him that at this moment, but she complied. The strong Jessica she usually was had vanished; now she felt like just a woman.
"Hey! Who's this wild kid trying to hit on my girl? If you want to chase girls, get lost and don't waste my time with experiments!" A middle-aged man staggered out from inside, his dark circles under his eyes indicating he hadn't slept in days.
"Uncle! Are you the one? That one!" Zheng Yifan stammered, struggling to recall the name. Berry had only told him to find a scientist, a madman, but didn't mention what he was called. This was frustrating!
"My name is Qian Weiping. You can call me Old Qian. We're all from the same ancestry, so let's not be so formal!" The old buddy brushed his hair aside, finally revealing his true appearance. He was indeed Chinese—a proper Chinese man. Zheng Yifan couldn't believe that the Nobel Prize nominee from that world was actually Chinese and went by a foreign name.
"You... you're Chinese?" Zheng Yifan choked out.
Old Qian smiled wryly. "Yes, I am Chinese. Surprised? Honestly, I didn't want to use that ridiculous name either, but without it, there’s no nomination and no funding for research. So what can I do?"
"Alright then! I forgot the name too!" (To be continued...)
