Now, the factory loomed ahead, but behind him, the Giant Earthworm relentlessly pursued Zheng Yifan, as if it had set its sights solely on him. No matter how loudly the Zombies roared or how agitated they became, the creature simply lunged forward, spitting at the Zombies and absorbing all the Zombie Crystal s. The Giant Earthworm seemed to be enjoying a feast, with Zheng Yifan as the main course and the other Zombies merely appetizers.
Its massive body slithered across the ground with astonishing speed, forcing Zheng Yifan to push himself to his limits. He was running faster than he ever thought possible; no one could comprehend how an earthworm could move so quickly.
Ahead, the factory area gradually came into view. It was a vast industrial complex, one of the largest in the Shenzhen Industrial Zone. Once home to nearly ten thousand workers, this factory had generated immense value for the country. In this post-apocalyptic world, those workers had become Zombies, roaming the factory and slaughtering their former colleagues until everyone had turned into a Zombie and their targets shifted.
Within the Factory Area, powerful Zombies lurked in corners, waiting to ambush anyone who dared enter. The relentless Giant Earthworm continued its pursuit, spewing green liquid from its Intoxication as it went mad. Zheng Yifan felt himself teetering on the edge of insanity—what was going on? Why was it fixated on him? Did he possess something valuable?
It couldn’t be; he had already consumed everything he had found, and all that remained on him were utterly mundane items!
Zheng Yifan scrutinized himself but found nothing of interest.
Before him stood the factory's entrance, tightly locked. Inside, Zombies pounded against the heavy doors; however, these formidable creatures had not managed to break through. Instead, they remained trapped within.
By the time they reached Second-Level Zombie status, most had already left this place. Those who lingered were primarily Zombies with a degree of intelligence. Their lingering attachment to their past lives kept them here.
A peculiar sound began to attract Zheng Yifan's attention; he suddenly thought he heard something from within the factory's corners or perhaps beneath them.
It was coming from the Sewers in a corner of the factory. The sound was faint, yet Zheng Yifan could hear it clearly.
He had intended to find a place to hide anyway; he had long set his sights on the Sewers but wondered if it would be a safe refuge from the Giant Earthworm.
Now, he felt compelled to descend because he had heard something intriguing.
"Big Brother! Are you sure we can successfully lure the Treasure Earthworm this time? That thing is a Treasure Hunter! It’s always searching for treasures. Can we really use this bead to draw it in?" The voices from the Sewers ignited excitement within Zheng Yifan.
Treasure Hunter and they also aimed to steal the Giant Earthworm's treasures, which included the Zombie Crystal. The treasures were actually hoarded by this Giant Earthworm, not absorbed by it. If that were the case, given its strength and the length of time it had been collecting, the number of Zombie Crystal s would be terrifying.
Zheng Yifan nearly drooled at the thought of the Zombie Crystal. It was the most valuable item in the apocalypse, without exception. In just this short time, this Giant Earthworm had already collected tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands. The amount he had gathered over the past two years must be in the millions or even billions.
Zheng Yifan couldn't imagine such a colossal number; he feared he would be overwhelmed with excitement.
In the sewer, the two individuals slowly raised their Crystals, feeling as if they were holding the most precious items in the world.
The giant worm outside was still over a thousand meters away, hesitating in the distance, likely having caught a whiff of other treasures.
Zheng Yifan could no longer think about anything else. He crouched beside the sewer cover, hiding his entire body while carefully observing the arm that extended out. The orb looked like a valuable item; although Zheng Yifan didn't know exactly what it was, something alive seemed to be inside it, continuously Attracting him. His entire Vital Energy felt like it was boiling, with strong waves of Vital Energy bursting forth from the orb.
However, that Vital Energy was unusable; knowledge could only observe it.
In his hesitation, an idea suddenly struck Zheng Yifan. No matter what this thing was, it had to be taken into his possession. Since it was meant for his pocket, he should grab it first.
With that thought in mind, Zheng Yifan reached out without any hesitation, snatched the orb, and in an instant, his figure flickered as he hurriedly fled.
The person who had lost the orb stared blankly upwards. They had been waiting for the arrival of the Treasure Earthworm, planning to sneak into its lair and obtain vast resources. But now? They had lost their treasure without finding the Treasure Earthworm, suffering both losses and setbacks.
That orb was their only treasure! Was survival in the Factory Area Sewers really that easy?
They had obtained it from a dying monster; since then, they had kept this treasure hidden away and never taken it out.
If it weren't for wanting to deal with the Treasure Earthworm, they probably wouldn't have revealed it at all.
Ideals are beautiful, but reality is cruel. They failed to attract the Treasure Earthworm and instead brought Zheng Yifan over.
"Ah!" A cry echoed, filled with a sorrowful howl. Two big men wept bitterly in the sewers, never imagining they would face such treatment, that their most important possession had been stolen.
Yes, it was definitely stolen. The Treasure Zombies had no such habit; they often shot out web-like strands from their bodies to ensnare their beloved treasures, then absorbed them into their bodies, slowly hiding them within the crevices of their skin.
Only when they returned to their lairs would they release everything.
There were both good and bad aspects, but to the Treasure Earthworm, everything sounded good. However, it was clear they no longer had that opportunity and could only weep in despair.
Zheng Yifan hid like a thief beneath the wall, carefully observing the crystal in his hand. The character inside shone with a golden light, radiating a dreamlike quality, yet it lacked any trace of active vital energy, lifelessly resting in his palm without any change.
For Zheng Yifan, it no longer mattered. As long as the item was in his hands, it would eventually prove useful.
Clutching the orb tightly, the Giant Earthworm behind him became even more frantic. Its speed increased steadily by more than ten percent, and Zombie Crystal s began to fall to the ground with a clattering sound.
The Giant Earthworm remained oblivious, charging madly toward Zheng Yifan, ignoring even the Zombies.
Eating? It didn't care about that. It had encountered something far better—its only hope for evolution, the hope of becoming a stronger beast. (To be continued...)
