The target had been set, and Zheng Yifan and his team officially began their advance. The highway was nearly deserted, with very few scattered vehicles. Perhaps there were simply too few humans in Australia; the animals they encountered along the way outnumbered them significantly. It was a blessing, really! The beasts had not evolved; otherwise, Australia would have been a hell on earth—a true nightmare.
The beasts would become humanity's greatest enemies. However, Zheng Yifan paid them no mind as he drove his vehicle at the forefront. It was a car cobbled together by the Hope Gathering Place, resembling a beast itself—wild and fierce from any angle, with formidable combat capabilities.
Behind him were three machine gun positions, covering a 60-degree field of fire and equipped with Zheng Yifan's supplies of ammunition. Their fighting power was exceptionally brutal.
Zheng Yifan drove swiftly, followed by a series of vehicles of unknown brands. No one knew how they had acquired them, but they pressed on regardless. Many were all-terrain vehicles; they understood that not all terrains ahead would be easy to navigate. In certain areas, all-terrain vehicles would prove to be the best choice.
More importantly, after checking his location, Zheng Yifan decided to change their destination temporarily. The first shot had been fired at Hedland Port.
Since it was relatively close and they were already in the process of occupying territory, it made sense to take one that was nearer. Moreover, Hedland Port was an iron ore export hub for Australia, complete with dedicated railways. This location could serve as a transportation hub to bring survivors here in the future.
If there were a hundred million survivors worldwide, Australia could develop rapidly; if there were a billion, then Australia would truly be filled.
However, realistically speaking, how could all the survivors from around the world be brought to Australia? That was merely a dream—there would only be as many people as there were.
After all, the total population of Hedland Port was just over ten thousand. With such a small number of inhabitants, Zheng Yifan himself wouldn't even be enough to handle them, let alone the two thousand strong mercenaries. For them, taking down zombies was as easy as slaughtering chickens.
The vehicles continued to drive along the road, where human corpses occasionally appeared on the pavement. Zheng Yifan arranged for his team to bury each body they encountered with a vehicle to prevent them from lying exposed in the wilderness.
After all, this would be their territory in the future. They needed to do things right and set an example to win over the hearts of local survivors in Australia.
With a population of twenty to thirty million overall, there were still about ten million survivors who were currently suffering greatly and waiting for Zheng Yifan to rescue them.
Of course, this perspective was solely from Zheng Yifan's viewpoint; they had no idea if anyone could truly save them.
Upon reaching Hedland Port, which served as a transportation hub with spacious roads, they could already see zombies lurking around.
Only upon arriving did Zheng Yifan realize that the figure of around ten thousand represented the fixed resident population of the entire city; transient populations had not been accounted for.
Outside the city limits, Zheng Yifan encountered numerous zombies wandering in work uniforms through the streets. The warriors in the vehicles behind him immediately became excited at the sight.
This is simply a blessing—battle! Immediately, everyone’s eyes turned red as they stared at the horde of Zombies before them, ready to strike down those undead creatures at any moment.
In Paris, their fighting had been futile, as there were no rewards. But here, it was different. They had access to more resources and greater promises.
As long as they eliminated the Zombies and secured the port, they would earn a certain amount of money.
Not the old currency, but the future Currency that had yet to be issued. However, on this land in Australia, it would definitely be released in the future, making it possible to earn money ahead of time. Despite the empty houses everywhere, everything in the future belonged to companies. If they wanted homes or luxury villas, they could have them.
Kill Zombies, earn money, and then buy luxurious houses. The entire society needed order; although their means of earning money was violent, the ultimate goal was construction.
They hoped for a better life.
Hedland Port was their first stop, with each person promised a thousand dollars.
This amount seemed incredibly low compared to their previous incomes. Yet they all understood that this was already substantial; in terms of past prices, it equated to around ten thousand dollars.
But now, even a million dollars wouldn’t buy a Hair here; yet they could spend freely.
Only when something has consumer value is it truly accepted; otherwise, who wants a pile of worthless paper?
It was precisely this excitement that drove them to participate in the mission.
Of course, the most important factor was that the population at Hedland Port was too small. Aside from those who hadn’t turned into Zombies, there were only about ten thousand people left, and each could only take down headless Zombies.
With such a small number of enemies, even without payment, it was manageable—after all, it was just about clearing a port. With ten thousand people concentrated in a narrow area, one person could handle all the Zombies. Even now, five Zombies per person was truly too few.
They might even finish off all the Zombies before they had their fill.
There were surely many who completed the mission without firing a single shot.
As one enters Heideland, the rich European charm is immediately apparent, along with large entertainment venues and trading hubs.
After all, this is a city where modern architecture is visible everywhere, and even in the central port area, one can see some low-rise buildings.
However, in reality? There are no internationally renowned skyscrapers towering above, nor is there a bustling crowd. It feels more like a mountain village.
The European ambiance is indeed present, but it is overshadowed by an industrial atmosphere. Numerous factories dot the landscape, and there are plenty of low-key bars.
As the convoy passed through, Zheng Yifan noticed a large number of Zombies emerging from the bars. They were already preparing to attract the Zombies for a collective slaughter.
The doors of residential houses would swing open as professional tools were brought out to deal with the Zombies.
There was a type of rebar that resembled letters; the horizontal bar at the front could hold back a Zombie while others used handguns or submachine guns to take them down.
Two thousand people surged like a tidal wave, sweeping through what felt like a mountain village at the port.
Zheng Yifan gazed silently at the port. This was Hedland Port, known for its massive throughput. Compared to domestic ports, it seemed to neglect facade projects entirely, giving Hedland Port an appearance reminiscent of over a century ago in the American West. (To be continued.)
