The scene gradually became clearer, as the thick steam increased, and Zheng Yifan began to see the unfolding picture.
It was a fierce battle, and the details of the conflict were slowly coming into focus.
This was indeed the Hope Gathering Place, as he recognized Jiang Liao and the warriors of Hope Gathering Place, along with Li Ning and Pu Qiang engaged in combat.
The battle had likely not lasted long, probably starting only recently. However, in the scene, Hope Gathering Place did not seem to have the upper hand; he did not see that formidable uncle among the opposing warriors, who must have been held back by Jiang's dominance.
Yet, the other zombies remained incredibly powerful. Their combat abilities had inexplicably surged, and he could see many people transformed into war machines.
It felt as if they were facing biological weapons, and Zheng Yifan's heart sank.
The battle in Deep City had reached a temporary conclusion; he had obtained what he wanted. However, the plan to reclaim Deep City would be delayed for a long time. The true expansion targets should be directed northward and eastward, but not toward the southern Deep City.
The waters here were too deep; Zheng Yifan lacked the strength to participate.
He flew rapidly, constantly looking back to witness scene after scene. But just as Zheng Yifan was getting into it, the battle in Deep City escalated again. The Solar Zombie King’s combat power was indeed overwhelmingly strong; in just a few seconds, it summoned a spectacle akin to the sun descending, instantly clearing away the surrounding mist and steam.
Zheng Yifan felt a tremendous force of destruction closing in from behind.
Then it was as if sharp blades of wind were chasing after him. He had to run quickly; otherwise, this thing would catch up to him, and the outcome would surely not be pleasant.
Flapping his wings with all his might, Zheng Yifan truly felt like a birdman, soaring higher and higher. Only at that altitude could he avoid being overwhelmed by so much steam rising up.
More importantly, the flight was too low, and there were many troubles. There were always some strange Zombies that would recklessly attack him, and many Birds came to join the chaos.
He now realized that being in mid-air was still beneath the Birds. He was merely a passerby.
The sheer number of Birds made Zheng Yifan truly understand what fear meant.
When he used to fly in an airplane, the playful Birds would come to play with him, those were the ones that had met their end. The real large groups of Birds were still unwilling to approach the aircraft. After all, it was something that couldn’t be eaten and emitted so much heat and unpleasant odor. It was like a skunk in the sky; no Bird wanted to get close. Now, as Zheng Yifan soared through the air, he truly merged with them. The Birds regarded Zheng Yifan as one of their own and naturally did not shy away from him. Thus, Zheng Yifan could feel the natural state of the Birds around him and saw that they were not hunting their kind; their targets had shifted to Zombies. They would catch the Zombies and swallow them whole.
There was no processing involved; it was that simple. For them, it was akin to catching a worm in a Post-Apocalypse scenario.
Continuing his flight, Zheng Yifan could no longer see what lay behind him. He believed it was the Solar Zombie King starting to unleash its powers, dispersing all the fog.
Zheng Yifan didn’t care much about that. In just a few minutes, he covered the distance to Deep City in a straight line at incredible speed, even rivaling sound itself. Only such speed could allow him to cross the entire Deep City. Now he looked at the Factory Area; here he still had some subordinates, but their defenses remained while the people were gone. When Zheng Yifan landed, it was evident that they must have left in a hurry recently. It was likely that they had been caught up in the battle within the Gathering Place.
Zheng Yifan felt reassured about them but was still worried about the battle in his Gathering Place. He quickly flapped his wings and flew back.
However, he did not notice that in a nearby room, four or five warriors were still quietly hiding, waiting for Zheng Yifan's return.
They could never have imagined that their leader had flown away from above. They hid within the building and only had brief moments to clear out nearby Zombies.
As a result, Zheng Yifan did not see them at all.
Perhaps it was a coincidence, but Zheng Yifan had already missed his intended destination; it had turned into Hope Gathering Place. Although the distance wasn’t too far, it certainly wasn’t close either; driving would take quite a while. Flying also required some time. Zheng Yifan pushed his speed to its limits.
On the road, he could already sense something was off. Occasionally flying low, he could see the Survivors relentlessly assaulting one mountain after another. Wherever there was a peak, the Survivors would rush up and claim it as their own. Zombies had also begun to appear in their living areas, which was unimaginable before, as the Zombies had been completely cleared out. How could there possibly be any Zombies here?
But in reality, that was the truth. Those Zombies, he had no idea where they came from, had started to invade the human Survivor Base.
Even more unbelievable events began to unfold. Their rear guard, the entire area south of Ruiguan, had been thoroughly cleaned out. Yet now, there were Zombies—numerous Zombies—so many that it was almost blinding. The mountains and plains were nearly filled with them, and their target was the Hope Gathering Place. The Survivors on the road were largely ignored; only those who stood directly in their way or nearby would be engaged in battle as they sought to capture them.
In the plains, one could see countless black dots moving actively along the roads. Machine guns were firing continuously; these were members of the Explorer Alliance or warriors from the Hope Gathering Place hunting down Zombies.
Their current objective was to clear out the Zombies and eliminate them. These monsters were incredibly formidable; although individually weak, fighting them was a hassle due to their characteristics. The bullets used while moving had to be large caliber, which added pressure to their supply load. Vehicles carrying ammunition followed one after another, yet even this could not guarantee sufficient supplies at the front lines.
What worried Zheng Yifan even more was the situation at the Hope Gathering Place. It had been a long time since there had been any conflict, and he never imagined that his Gathering Place would once again face provocation.
Filled with anger and concern, Zheng Yifan continued to fly on. (To be continued.)
