Jie dealt with the airborne Zheng Yifan, helping the woman withstand a partial strike from his Adamantium Shield. Meanwhile, Old Turtle Xira had already emerged from the river; this Old Buddy was not one to miss an opportunity. As In Calamity launched its attack, he had already slipped out of his slumber, his head tucked within his shell.
As soon as Jie made his move, he attacked. It was a cleverly timed strike; under normal circumstances, he would never have succeeded. Everything hinged on Jie's choices. If Jie had chosen to abandon the defense and instead countered his attack, it would have been utterly futile.
However, if he urgently needed to assist in fending off the aerial assault, that would pose a significant problem. This strike would accurately target In Calamity, and the resulting impact could not be underestimated.
It was clearly a no-lose scenario. If Jie helped the woman in the air, he would face Xyra's attack, which could cost him half his life and require at least half a month to recover.
If he defended instead, that would be even better. The woman would likely be injured under such an assault; Old Turtle had been bullied by her before, and if she were to take a beating now, Old Turtle Xira would surely be delighted.
Since it was a guaranteed profit, not taking advantage of it would be unwise.
Thus, without any shame, Old Turtle Xira launched an attack on Jie.
The fool, as expected, did not defend himself at all and was bitten on the neck by Old Turtle, tearing away a large chunk of flesh. If it weren't for a mysterious energy swirling around him that mitigated the attack, he might have already been dead.
The woman in midair was suffering even more. Although the Adamantium Shield had been partially deflected once, its weight remained overwhelming—constantly increasing and accelerated by gravity. The force of the attack began to recover once again.
She could only grit her teeth and endure the pain while bracing herself against the shield. Jie wanted to evade but knew there was no escape. The shield seemed to lock down the space around him, leaving no room for evasion.
Zheng Yifan in the air sensed that this attack was still too weak. He prepared his Silver Spear with a downward thrust aimed at the woman below, resembling a meteor descending for an attack.
He intended to take advantage of the moment when the Adamantium Shield struck the woman to shatter her defenses and deliver a fatal blow.
The woman seemed to sense Zheng Yifan's intentions. However, she had no chance to resist; she could only endure a couple of hits, which was unavoidable. Zheng Yifan's moves were truly repulsive, leaving her no choice but to respond.
Thus, the Adamantium Shield collided with the Bird Peck head-on.
A tremendous force propelled the Vital Energy, causing the surrounding Vital Energy to rapidly condense before exploding, creating intense waves. The power of the Adamantium Shield was instantly redirected.
The woman couldn't withstand such a direct hit, but she had ways to mitigate the damage. She could still endure one attack, especially since it was a weakened version.
What she absolutely did not expect was that the Bird Peck in her hand would be struck down by a shield, reducing it to half its size. The upper part of the Bird Peck was completely flattened.
At this moment, she had no time to think too much because Zheng Yifan's attack followed closely behind. His strikes remained as sharp as ever, aimed directly at her.
The Silver Spear's assault was fierce, and Zheng Yifan's grip was as solid as a mountain.
His body leaped forward, his wings acting as boosters. Although they didn't actually emit flames, they allowed the airflow to align perfectly with Zheng Yifan's control.
When power swelled to its peak, it became a force of slaughter, and Zheng Yifan's attack surged forth.
Time seemed to freeze at the moment of their clash. The half Bird Peck collided with the Silver Spear, and the air appeared to solidify.
Zheng Yifan focused ahead. His eyes met those of the woman, and their wings mirrored each other—only differing in color. Looking at her, he saw confusion in her eyes, as if she were questioning where his wings had come from.
Zheng Yifan also felt it distinctly; his wings seemed to pull him back slightly, as if they disapproved of him harming this woman.
He knew that the wings behind him had been completely refined by himself, meaning that their current reactions were purely instinctive. This was only possible due to the deep emotional ties of his previous master.
"Ultimately, I have seen Xuan's wings, but his person is no longer here." The woman's voice was as clear as water, stirring something within Zheng Yifan. He suddenly felt a surge of power rising from the wings, as if they were rejoicing. What else could it be but the love of his original master?
There was nothing else that could replace it.
"This is a pair of wings grown from a gem I obtained; it seems we are acquainted!" Zheng Yifan's voice was very calm, seemingly devoid of any emotion.
The woman forced a smile, "This is Xuan's Primordial Pearl. Unlike the ones born from the earth, a human's Primordial Pearl contains only the Superpower of its original master. I also possess a similar Primordial Pearl from the First Vitality Era, given to me when Xuan fell."
Her words seemed to carry tears as she gazed at Zheng Yifan, her thoughts drifting back millions of years to the First Vitality Era, their era, the time when she was happiest—if only that damned war hadn't happened, if only that dreadful calamity hadn't struck.
She didn't know what she could do. Watching Zheng Yifan seemed to pull her thoughts far away. Zheng Yifan did not take advantage of her distraction because he knew that while it would be easy to kill this woman, he needed to learn some things from her.
"Actually, I should have gone with Xuan during the First Era of Primordial Energy, wandering together and preventing him from dying in that last war. I am a coward!" The woman's voice was filled with sorrow as she looked at Zheng Yifan with eyes full of emotion.
Zheng Yifan felt as if fifteen buckets were being drawn from a well—his heart was in turmoil. He couldn't clearly see the woman's face, but he sensed that she was beautiful. Yet who would have thought this beauty would care so much about the wings on his back, speaking to herself without regard for her own life?
"Child, you have obtained Xuan's Primordial Pearl; it seems you are also blessed. I possess another Primordial Pearl within me that can elevate your wings to their complete state. However, merging the two Primordial Pearls requires a stroke of luck; I hope you can achieve that," her voice trembled with emotion, causing Zheng Yifan to suddenly feel alarmed. (To be continued)
