Under the relentless siege, the cockroaches might be retreating step by step, but as Zheng Yifan watched, his brow furrowed and sweat began to bead in his palms. The Superpowered Individual's powers had their limits; it was impossible to keep unleashing them indefinitely. These people were fighting with everything they had.
Yet, the cockroaches seemed almost endless.
In the Post-Apocalypse, they had encountered cockroaches in their home, so they knew just how disgusting these creatures could be.
Their reproductive capabilities were formidable, and in the current environment, those abilities were even more pronounced. If they wanted to eliminate future problems, they would have to eradicate all the cockroaches in Ancheng.
However, that thought was nearly delusional. Just how fierce were these cockroaches? They were constantly resisting and charging forward, attacking relentlessly, with millions dying in the process.
But in reality, the cockroaches were expanding; their numbers grew faster than those that fell. If they truly closed in on the warriors who were attacking them, it would mean victory for the cockroaches. They would have to retreat a considerable distance to set up a second defensive position. Regrouping would mean a larger area to defend and more resources needed.
But those people did not possess the high tier of Superpowered Individuals that Zheng Yifan did. These individuals were gathered together at a higher tier of power.
When using their Superpowers, they did not showcase their destructive capabilities; instead, they aimed to minimize their damage while relying on collective strength to launch continuous attacks.
This was the only way to ensure their Superpowers could maintain a steady offensive.
Otherwise, if one person unleashed two powerful moves, they would quickly run out of energy, and the number of cockroaches killed would be minimal.
This was not an enemy that could be defeated by sheer quality; thus, slow attacks yielding sustained damage became their preferred strategy.
Faced with the cockroaches, they made the right choice. There were also commanders directing from behind.
The nests where these cockroaches emerged were continuously spewing forth more of them. No one knew exactly how many there were, but everyone understood that far too many had come out. It was feared that Ancheng's underground had already been hollowed out over a significant distance.
The main reason these cockroaches had not surged to the surface remained unknown to them; perhaps it was because cockroaches feared sunlight. They preferred damp and dark environments.
The sun above was too scorching.
They emerged now because the underground entrances had been opened; they needed food. Yet in reality, they feared sunlight and the power of dryness.
At this moment, all the cockroaches were frantically absorbing nutrients. Below ground, they lacked sufficient resources for nourishment. They had reached their limits; cannibalism among their kind had become a common occurrence.
After the breach in Ancheng, they would spread out, consuming everything in sight until they were full, before returning to their lair.
They all knew where their nest was. They would hide away and return to their homes.
There lay their territory, a more suitable environment for survival.
Indeed, their search for food outside felt like a desperate struggle, akin to humans fighting in the desert.
However, without venturing into the desert, there would be no food. Thus, they had to charge forward.
Warriors from all four directions continued to engage in battle. Zheng Yifan flapped his wings, hovering in mid-air, his brow furrowed as he observed the situation below.
Among these cockroaches were some special ones that had never left the central area. Even after spreading out, many rooms still contained food. Yet these cockroaches had given up. It was only when those special cockroaches with golden patterns passed by and took the food that the others continued to advance.
This was highly unusual. It reminded Zheng Yifan of mutated beasts. It was very likely that there were indeed true mutated fellows among the cockroaches. They refrained from coming out because their bodies had grown too large, making them more sensitive to the scorching heat outside. More importantly, the external environment was unsuitable for cockroaches to survive.
Zheng Yifan needed to observe this phenomenon to determine its existence. However, as he gazed at the hole from which the cockroaches poured out, he already sensed something was amiss.
Yet he dared not enlarge the hole. It had begun to widen slowly on its own. If Zheng Yifan attacked and further expanded it, the consequences would be terrifying; a massive swarm of cockroaches would surge forth, overwhelming the warriors.
They were already struggling to resist as it was. Zheng Yifan would not add to their difficulties.
He watched as those warriors continued to fend off the cockroaches.
However, as the slaughter commenced, more arrangements from Gathering Place began to unfold.
Zheng Yifan spotted Wu Yingzhou at the front lines, alongside Li Ning, this fellow. The two of them were among the most capable when it came to dealing with large numbers of zombies. Now Li Ning could clear away many zombies on his own, while Wu Yingzhou excelled in group battles.
Though he lacked particularly powerful area attacks, his law avatar ensured continuous assaults. Moreover, he had developed more methods for dealing with these smaller zombies since advancing to Fifth Level.
Now, five law avatars hovered above the swarm of cockroaches; those cockroaches did not leap at all.
Wu Yingzhou conjured a long staff in his hand, moving it gracefully among the swarm of cockroaches.
With each swing, the number of cockroaches rapidly decreased, as if five whirlpools were continuously slaughtering them.
Li Ning's power was no longer reliant on sheer lethality. While his destructive force was indeed immense, capable of clearing one or two waves of cockroaches single-handedly, what would that ultimately lead to?
It would surely end in despair. Cockroaches did not care about casualties. What he did was something Zheng Yifan had never anticipated.
A barrier spanning over a hundred square meters might not seem very large, but when Li Ning placed the barrier around the already expanded and massive cave entrance, its purpose became clear.
Its function was not to kill the cockroaches but to slow down their emergence from within. Each cockroach had to crawl for a long time before it could exit, and those behind could only climb over their companions to enter Li Ning's barrier, further delaying their escape.
Thus, the rate at which the cockroaches surged forth slowed significantly, providing a substantial strategic buffer for the teams in all four directions. This allowed them to gradually eliminate the cockroaches.
All of this was necessary.
However, after more than an hour of this strategy, it was evident that some enormous cockroaches below were starting to grow restless.
The ground began to tremble. It seemed that truly formidable cockroaches were about to emerge. (To be continued.)
