There was no feeling of flames exploding, no madness of slaughter, and no blood splattering, yet the effect was astonishing.
Zheng Yifan glanced at the distant Superpowered Individuals, then looked at Li Ning, giving a slight nod as a form of acknowledgment for his actions.
Li Ning surely understood the anger that surged within him. Yes! Anger. He seemed to see the reason behind humanity's descent into the abyss of death—not because Zombies were too powerful, nor because beasts were unresistable, but because humans were killing each other. They had destroyed themselves and obliterated their own hopes.
Zheng Yifan could not bear it, yet he could not escape it either. This was the apocalypse; he could only strive to maintain some semblance of order within the confines of the Hope Gathering Place.
Even in the Gathering Place of Revelation and Hope, there were dark corners. Ordinary citizens still struggled to fill their stomachs, and he knew that some people charged tolls and fees for passage. However, under the high-pressure policies of the Gathering Place’s upper echelons, no one dared to act brazenly.
In such an apocalyptic environment, Zheng Yifan truly could not tighten the reins too much.
But now that such a situation had arisen, he absolutely had to take action, and it must come at a bloody cost. They had crossed the line in his heart.
“Don’t kill us! Please leave us a way out!” The Survivors knelt on the ground, repeatedly bowing their heads in hopes that Zheng Yifan would spare them.
In their eyes, Zheng Yifan appeared like a god of death; with just a wave of his hand, those vicious Black Bosses had already met their end.
The highway was not devoid of people; many Survivors were still transporting supplies. Nowadays, Zombies generally began to gather in fixed locations; as long as they didn’t provoke them, there wouldn’t be too much trouble.
Many ordinary Survivors cultivated crops. In this world plagued by disaster, if there was one area that had changed advantageously, it was agriculture. Crops could be planted year-round regardless of the environment; all it took was to eliminate a few Zombies for fertilization.
But could anyone kill a Zombie? That creature was truly terrifying. No one could guarantee they could take down a Zombie.
They could only use every means possible to set traps and eliminate some of the lowest-level Zombies while gambling on luck that Second-Level Zombies wouldn’t appear.
The person in the cage was also trembling in fear. If a Second-Level Zombie came for him in the cage, he might stand a chance; there was a good possibility he could kill it.
Do not lose hope. A Second-Level Zombie might be faster, but its claws might not harm someone inside the cage. The mesh of the cage was tight; for a Zombie to break through, it would have to cling to the surface while those inside could strike back with steel bars against those Zombies.
The most terrifying were those Third-Stage Zombies. Or the beasts; they were truly unstoppable.
Of course, now there were two more people, those two who were Killing without blinking an eye on the highway, and had no reason to attack yet were still Killing.
Looking at their combat power, they were definitely Superpowered Individuals, and not at a low level.
In front of such individuals, they were like ants. They were even less than ants, as they wouldn’t waste their time killing ants for fun. But killing them was a possibility.
“Get up, all of you! Don’t just sit there like a bunch of weaklings!” Zheng Yifan shouted angrily, glaring at the others.
Perhaps he really shouldn’t pity them; these people lacked any backbone. However, he knew in his heart that those with true grit had either become Superpowered Individuals or had died long ago. Those who were still alive had their own ways of surviving.
These people survived by being clever. In fact, they were much smarter than those who had died.
“Sir! It’s not that we don’t want to stand tall. We used to dare to fight and confront Zombies. But things are different now; Zombies have either banded together or become particularly powerful, while resources are dwindling. More importantly, we’re just ordinary people, not Superpowered Individuals.”
“Exactly! Sir, it’s not that we’re afraid to fight, but do you know? Even the Essence Fruit that is almost guaranteed to kill you if consumed is now impossible to find. As soon as someone discovers it, they’ll eat it immediately. Becoming a Superpowered Individual means having food in the future; the Survivor Alliance will take them in. If they die, well, that’s the end of it.” Another frail Fellow added.
Only the one nicknamed Monkey ignored what the others said and walked over to the cage where his brother-in-law was kept, unlocking the cage door with a key.
“Brother-in-law! We don’t need to attract Zombies anymore; it’s useless. We won’t survive a month anyway. Let’s go up the mountain! If we find an Essence Fruit, we’ll take a chance; if we encounter a beast, we’ll accept our fate.” Monkey was particularly calm now, completely unfazed by Zheng Yifan's intimidation.
He had come to terms with life and death; if he died, so be it—there was no hope left anyway.
“Kuwah! What are you doing? Do you remember what your sister said before she died? To live well and survive? Look at you acting like this!” The man inside didn’t respond to Monkey but instead slapped him.
“Wah!” A cry erupted from Monkey, sounding more like a wail of despair.
"What’s the point! What’s the point of living? My sister sacrificed herself to let us escape, and she rushed into a horde of Zombies to feed them. And what happened? Aren’t we still struggling to survive?"
"She fought bravely, but you also consumed that Essence Fruit, didn’t you? What did it get you? You burned for a week with no signs of anything happening. Superpowered Individual? Not a single thing!" The monkey's cries grew louder, and the others fell silent, tears falling to the ground.
In the fields, the wind blew as several Zombies appeared once more.
No one knew why there were so many Zombies here. Zheng Yifan could only tell that these Zombies were merely passing through; they had been attracted by the scent of blood.
If his estimation was correct, these Zombies were summoned by those at the seaside, continuously gathering towards the coast.
This situation meant that there was no large horde of Zombies here. They were slowly searching for their groups; Zombies wouldn’t form teams on their own but would only truly integrate once they found a larger group.
So the Survivors here could still hold on.
If a massive horde of Zombies were to pass through, then there would be no way to survive!
"How can you say we can’t survive? Haven’t you ever gone south? Towards Ancheng?" Zheng Yifan frowned.
"Ancheng? Who doesn’t know that it has already been overrun by Zombies? Who would dare go there?" a few people replied helplessly. (To be continued)
