At the entrance of Totenburg, three merchant caravans were preparing to set off simultaneously in different directions. Each caravan was backed by a formidable Superpowered Individual, capable of effectively protecting the merchants as they conducted their business and earned a living.
More importantly, these individuals could enrich the variety of goods available for sale. The Merchant Guild offered high-end products or strictly controlled items found within the Gathering Place.
Take food, for instance; few merchants were willing to transport it for sale. Moreover, if a Chamber of Commerce were to purchase food, the quantity would be overwhelming. The food supplies at each Gathering Place were strategic resources and could not be distributed to others.
Hope Gathering Place had no fear of food shortages. In the real world, Zheng Yifan had developed it into a large-scale food base capable of producing vast quantities of food.
Berry and the others predicted that food production would exceed expectations, yet they remained resolute in executing Zheng Yifan's orders. They understood that in a post-apocalyptic world, people could survive without spiritual sustenance but could not live without food.
Once the world stabilized, any excess food would begin to be transformed for other uses. However, there was currently little demand for such transformations.
It was already a challenge for people to survive; asking for more was simply unrealistic. Many had not even managed to maintain their own homes. More importantly, they had all become impoverished, each desperately hoping to earn enough money.
In this context, the prices at which Hope Group purchased food were satisfactory to them. Zheng Yifan was also pleased to see Currency entering the market, while the actual food was intended for use in the Apocalyptic World. Without sufficient food supplies, he would never expand so aggressively.
Despite Hope Group's apparent power in the real world, when it came to supplying food for the entire Apocalyptic World, they would find themselves stretched thin.
The demand for food from billions of people might equate to that of just one country. Three years had passed, and humanity continued to survive stubbornly; the population count in the billions was easily achievable. Hope Gathering Place had even begun to see births as people enjoyed a better quality of life and naturally strove for family stability.
No one wished for their lineage to end; this was an unspoken rule in their hearts. More importantly, they needed to continue their existence.
In truth… the most pressing issue was that they simply did not have enough contraceptives; accidental pregnancies were common occurrences.
Now, with the supply of food in the post-apocalyptic world entirely managed by Hope Gathering Place, its wealth allowed members of the Explorer Alliance to witness profits from food sales. Despite lacking the high profits seen with luxury goods, food's demand was substantial and its consumption capacity high. Luxury items were not necessities and were only sought after by the upper echelons of Gathering Places.
They enjoyed their leisure while distributing those profits among others.
Zheng Yifan stood before them now, outside the city gates, watching as those merchant caravans set off with his large backpack slung over his shoulders.
The expressions on those people's faces seemed a bit strange. Zheng Yifan had already heard the rumors that several large teams from the Hope Gathering Place had formed a caravan with a wager: whoever made the most profit this time would gain control of the central territory in Totenburg.
That area was recently developed into high-rise buildings for the Explorer Alliance. The base of the Mercenaries would be directly across from his Explorer Alliance.
Naturally, the high-rise directly opposite was the most sought after, becoming the target of their bet.
Zheng Yifan was pleased to see them striving for their status, realizing they were truly becoming one with the Hope Gathering Place. Even though they were arguing over interests, it was still within the framework of the Hope Gathering Place.
At least there were no underhanded tactics involved.
"Are those people your strongest ones from the Hope Gathering Place? The most powerful legion? They really are impressive," Zhang Qiang said, looking at them with envy.
He could sense many individuals of comparable strength to his own. Although it felt somewhat frustrating, he was still proud to be among the top tier of people.
However, watching them, he knew deep down that his superpower wasn't as strong as it appeared. Level didn’t equate to everything; his Superpower Application was actually quite different from others.
It was truly a case of success and failure being tied to the System.
They lacked channels for breakthroughs, while the warriors of the Hope Gathering Place could continuously improve themselves.
Zheng Yifan even felt that their superpowers didn’t seem as difficult to break through as his own. He sensed that these individuals could advance without entering the Vitality Tower, whereas he could only seek breakthrough solutions within it.
At least that was true for the Seventh Level.
"That is our Gathering Place's Explorer Alliance; it's a civilian organization. Their main purpose is trade and communication, as well as searching for useful resources in the ruins. In special circumstances, they also conduct city raids to gain substantial profits," Zheng Yifan explained to Zhang Qiang.
The Explorer Alliance had already completed several city raids, and although they weren't targeting major metropolises, they still earned a significant amount, claiming all resources for themselves—except for houses and land.
They gained wealth and resources while the Hope Gathering Place acquired necessary territory. Most importantly, those cities they conquered were actually ones that the Hope Gathering Place had temporarily lacked time to conquer; thus, their profits hadn't caught the attention of the main forces of the Hope Gathering Place.
With the petrified Zhang Qiang beside him, Zheng Yifan began to move forward, pulling him along.
Their destination was in the mountainous region to the north, a rather remote area where Zheng Yifan himself would have difficulty finding the way.
However, with Zhang Qiang as a guide, they would surely find their location easily and bring back the Primordial Pearl.
As for the destination, Zheng Yifan had already made up his mind. He just needed to settle things later.
This was truly an opportunity to seize a foothold on the seaside.
Zhang Qiang had only been petrified for a few minutes, but he quickly recovered and silently walked ahead. Although Qianyuan Village was located in the mountains, the current area was all highways. It was mountainous, yet it had roads; in the Post-Apocalypse era, the living conditions of those in the mountains had truly improved.
To get rich, one must first build roads—this is an inevitable and destined truth.
So even those mountainous areas, after investments from wealthy individuals and investors, had roads constructed. As Zheng Yifan walked along the main highway, his mood was particularly different. When he truly left Totenburg and continued northward, he realized that people's lives were actually more difficult than he had imagined.
Perhaps among all the news, the only good tidings were that the number of Zombies had decreased and become more concentrated.
After all, they now had hope for survival. (To be continued.)
