An hour later, Wang Yi returned to the dormitory. She looked exhausted and slumped into a chair.
"Wang Yi, you're back!" Liu Hong exclaimed, her face lighting up with surprise.
Wang Yi nodded in response.
"Wang Yi, is your workplace far from here?" Liu Hong continued to ask.
"Not really, it's just a bit tiring," Wang Yi replied casually.
"Wang Yi, when will it be our turn to start working?" Liu Hong looked at Wang Yi with eager anticipation.
"Soon, I'll help arrange some new positions for you," Wang Yi said dismissively.
Satisfied with this answer, Liu Hong returned to her own spot.
And so, days turned into weeks. Wang Yi maintained her routine of arriving and leaving work on time. By the second month, she even treated us to a meal.
However, Lin Qing had been on a business trip for two months now and still hadn't returned.
"Wang Yi, where did Lin Qing go on her business trip? Why hasn't she come back yet?" I asked.
"Oh, Lin Qing is busy making big money! Why do you care when she'll be back?" Wang Yi replied impatiently.
I nodded and chose not to say anything further.
"Look at my new shoes and bag!" Wang Yi announced as she changed into a new dress and stood in front of us, her face beaming with pride.
"Wang Yi, those shoes are really nice," Liu Hong said enviously as she admired Wang Yi's footwear.
"Aren't they pretty? Sister Qiu gave them to me."
Wang Yi said with a proud expression, "When will it be our turn to start working? I want to buy some nice bags too."
Liu Hong asked eagerly.
"Soon! I'll arrange it when I get back from my business trip next month!" Wang Yi replied with a smile.
Wang Yi had become increasingly generous lately, treating us to meals without holding back.
"I'll cover today's meal," Wang Yi said generously.
"Great, thank you so much!" I quickly expressed my gratitude.
While eating, Wang Yi posted a few photos on social media. I noticed that Lin Qing hadn't updated her profile in a month, so I clicked on her avatar and sent her a message. To my surprise, Lin Qing replied instantly.
"When are you coming back?" I asked.
"Soon! I'm doing well here, so don't worry," Lin Qing replied.
I finally felt relieved.
"Xinran, what are you up to?" At that moment, Li Daqiu sat down next to me.
"Nothing much," I replied coldly.
Seeing my indifferent attitude, Li Daqiu chose not to say anything further.
I quickly finished a few bites of my meal and left the restaurant. I found an empty corner to meet with someone I had been secretly planning with and showed them the photos I had just taken.
"I know these two people; I suspect they are working together," I said, pointing at the photos of Li Daqiu and Wang Yi.
The person in question was none other than the police officer I encountered at the station exit. They were investigating the recent string of disappearances among first-year students on campus. After looking at the photographs, the officer hurriedly left.
Wang Yi had left school under the guise of a business trip, but I followed her and discovered that she had been skipping classes for quite some time. Even the homeroom teacher was unaware of her truancy. Attendance and coursework were all arranged by Wang Yi for a fee.
When we met, I shared this information with the police and suggested that they pay closer attention to her, as it would likely lead to more discoveries. Wang Yi's presence at school was nearly nonexistent, yet her updates on social media became increasingly frequent, almost every two hours. The content consisted of posts about making easy money, boasting that she could buy a car and travel abroad just three months into her job, achieving financial freedom at a young age. Her social media was filled with photos from her supposed business trips, portraying herself as a successful individual.
Wang Yi's tactics were all aimed at winning people's hearts. The more she promoted herself, the more likely she was to attract those who were ambitious but unwilling to work hard. Under the pretext of offering trial positions, she recruited ten first-year students. These students shared a common trait: they came from poor farming families.
In such a barren environment, those who saw the city's prosperity but lacked inner strength often dreamed of easy fortunes falling from the sky. With their families in difficult circumstances and living far away, even if they went missing, it wouldn't cause much of an uproar; by the time their families found out, it would already be too late.
I privately messaged Wang Yi to share my suspicions with her. She replied with a smiley face, "Xinran, when did you figure it out?"
"The night before I got off the bus, I noticed you talking in the carriage with Li Daqiu," I confessed.
"Xinran, since you already know, do you think you can still run away?"
