I took a deep breath and carefully inhaled the fragrance. My brow furrowed as I thought to myself, "Could the real Yinling Flower fruit be on the Third Floor?"
"Help! Please don’t kill me!" Just as I was about to head to the third floor, I suddenly heard a girl’s voice crying for help from a room on my right.
"First, I need to save her!" Without hesitation, I gripped the Rusty Sword in my hand and swiftly dashed toward the room.
The second floor of the building was completely different from the first. The first floor was empty, resembling a living room, while the second floor had six rooms, three on each side, making it feel cramped. The room from which the cries were coming was at the far end on the left side.
I rushed toward that room, and as I passed by other rooms, I noticed some strange phenomena.
The doors of those rooms were all open, and inside, everything was in disarray. Some furniture had even been smashed to pieces, showing signs of a struggle.
What shocked me the most was that the floors, walls, and tables in those rooms were splattered with red liquid. Even the flower board in one of the rooms was stained with that red substance, creating a very bloody scene.
I stopped at the doorway of the room, reached out to touch a bit of the red liquid on the door, and then sniffed it. Raising an eyebrow in confusion, I muttered to myself, "Strange. This liquid doesn’t smell like blood; it shouldn’t be human blood."
I wiped off the Red Liquid from my finger and continued running inside. Soon, I reached the door of the innermost room, but it was locked. I tried to push it open but failed.
So, I stepped back a few paces and kicked it hard, violently breaking down the wooden door.
I quickly slipped inside, raising my Rusty Sword in front of me while shouting loudly, "Everyone stop! Don’t be afraid, miss! I’m here to save you!"
My gaze swept across the room and I found about a dozen people standing inside. They didn’t emanate an Eerie Aura; instead, they radiated a faint Yang Qi. They were alive—there were no Ghostly Beings in this room at all.
The group held cameras; some sat at the back watching while others stood at the front acting. When they saw me burst in, they all turned to look at me in unison.
A slightly overweight middle-aged man with a mustache and a hat was holding a megaphone. He looked at me angrily and shouted, "Hey! What are you doing here? Don't you know this is a film set? Get him out of here!"
Feeling a bit embarrassed, I scratched my ear and quickly put away my Rusty Sword, apologizing, "Uh, I didn't realize it was a performance! I'm sorry, I'll leave right away!"
I turned to open the door, ready to step outside when the actress inside stood up and called out to me, "Mask Man, wait a moment! I need to talk to you."
I paused and turned back to glance at the girl. She was quite pretty, but her clothes were stained with red liquid, and her hair was messy, making her look somewhat disheveled. I recognized her voice as the one that had called for help earlier.
"Uh, okay!" I nodded in confusion, realizing it was all just acting.
The girl tugged at the arm of the middle-aged man who had shouted earlier and playfully said, "Director, let me take a break. Once I've gathered my emotions, we can start filming again."
The director tapped her on the head with his hand and said irritably, "Liu Yinglan, how can you even think about resting? Others have completed this scene in one take; you've done it seven or eight times and still can't get it right. Focus on your script and stop thinking about breaks!"
"Dad, don’t be so serious! I'll be back after a short rest!" Liu Yinglan stuck out her tongue at Fat Director and then turned to grab my hand, pulling me outside.
Fat Director watched Liu Yinglan's retreating figure with a helpless shake of his head before telling the other crew members, "Everyone take a break. We'll start again once Liu Yinglan returns."
After Liu Yinglan pulled me out of the room, she released my hand and turned to me with curiosity. "Mask Man, I'm Liu Yinglan. What's your name? By the way, did you really rush into the set to save me?"
Feeling a bit shy, I scratched my ear again and replied, "Well, I'm Jiang Ling. That was completely an accident; please don't take it seriously!"
Liu Yinglan turned her head away unhappily, pouting as she said, "I thought you were drawn here by my acting skills; turns out I was overthinking it."
"My dad is a director, and he dragged me into acting, but I've never studied performance and have no idea what acting is. To make matters worse, my dad actually made me the female lead in a horror film. I've never believed in ghosts, and I’m not afraid of anything; I just don’t know what fear is."
"Thus, during the filming process, I earned the nickname 'Queen of Fake Tears.'" Liu Yinglan finished her story and looked at me with sincere eyes, asking, "Jiang Ling, do you believe in ghosts?"
I listened to Liu Yinglan without intending to interrupt her. But suddenly, her earnest gaze made me feel a bit guilty. I cleared my throat and put on an expression of a wise hermit, replying with a question, "Liu Yinglan, if I told you I've seen a ghost, would you believe me?"
Liu Yinglan scoffed, "Pfft, who are you trying to fool? There are no ghosts in this world."
Before I knew it, we had reached the stairway on the second floor. Liu Yinglan caught a whiff of something fragrant in the air. She inhaled deeply a few times, her face lighting up with delight as she said softly, "Wow, it smells so good! What is that scent? How come I've never smelled it before?"
"I remember there's only one altar on the third floor; there shouldn't be any pleasant fragrance like this. I want to see where it's coming from." Without hesitation, Liu Yinglan dashed up to the third floor.
Watching Liu Yinglan's retreating figure, I shook my head helplessly and muttered to myself with a wry smile, "Liu Yinglan really has no fear at all!"
Worried that Liu Yinglan might be taken out by a Ghostly Being on the third floor, I hurriedly followed her up the stairs.
