Xie Yue's Past.
In a village three thousand years ago, a baby was born—a boy.
His family named him Yan Changting.
From the moment Yan Changting came into the world, he was different from others; the word handsome could hardly describe him.
Despite his family's poverty, he carried himself with an air of elegance even in his tattered cloth garments.
The wealthy daughters and sons of high officials felt ashamed when they saw Yan Changting in his patched clothes.
Yan Changting was quiet and solitary, always feeling out of place among the other village children, especially those from affluent families.
By the age of seven, he spoke little to his family and often spent time alone, observing.
On his seventh birthday, the village was raided by bandits, some of whom wielded strange magical powers that even Brother Anping from the village could not contend with.
In the end, Yan Changting was shielded by his family and survived the ordeal. When he awoke, he found that the lively people who had been talking just hours before now lay lifeless on the ground, their bodies marked with horrifying wounds and bleeding profusely.
Before long, a young White-Clad Cultivator arrived.
The White-Clad Cultivator immediately spotted the living Yan Changting among the many corpses. Seeing that he was still young and had potential, he took him back to the mountains for proper training.
The White-Clad Cultivator was one of the leaders of the Seven Lives Sect.
With the sudden addition of an inexperienced child to the sect, whispers began to circulate among the disciples.
They speculated that after seeing their leader return alone one day only to come back with a child, he must have fathered an illegitimate son outside.
However, such gossip was harmless, and their leader paid it no mind.
On his first day in the mountains, the leader began teaching Yan Changting about cultivation. In just one short hour, seven-year-old Yan Changting awakened his Spiritual Source.
"Truly a seed I have chosen well!" the Sect Master thought to himself.
Due to his young age, Yan Changting was not yet qualified to become a disciple of the Seven Lives Sect. However, being the Sect Master's child, he was allowed to stay on the mountain.
In the Seven Lives Sect, there were many places Yan Changting had never visited; he could only remain in the Sect Master's residence, the back garden, and the kitchen.
The place where Yan Changting spent the most time was the piece of land at the end of the back garden, which overlooked a cliff.
Every morning, as dawn broke, Yan Changting would come here to practice. While cultivating, he would gaze at the clouds and mist before him, feeling quite at ease.
When the Sect Master called for him, he would head to the kitchen for meals.
"Master, look over there! What is that bright flame in the distance?" Yan Changting asked, pointing towards a town far below the cliff.
"That is the Mortal Realm. There is a town there. When you grow up, you will have a chance to visit it," his master replied.
The two spent their nights here teaching and learning from each other...
Five years passed in an instant, and Yan Changting had grown into a handsome young man.
At twelve years old, he was finally eligible to officially join the Seven Lives Sect.
His first appearance was at the Arena, where many young girls were captivated by him at first sight. Several senior brothers felt a pang of jealousy.
That day, Yan Changting's first word was "Challenge."
There were two ways to join the Seven Lives Sect: one could either reach a certain level of cultivation or defeat someone with higher cultivation.
Those who were jealous of Yan Changting stepped onto the stage to challenge him but were quickly driven off by the Sect Master. This left some disciples unhappy; after all, challenging was part of the rules. Did the Sect Master fear that his 'son' Yan Changting would be bullied and thus break this tradition?
However, they soon dismissed that thought.
The Sect Master personally led a senior brother from the Spirit Jade Realm onto the stage to accept challenges.
The jealous disciples began to wonder if this twelve-year-old boy had already reached the upper level of the Spirit Jade Realm.
However, when Yan Changting stepped onto the stage, everyone realized he was merely a young practitioner at the lower level of the Spirit Jade Realm.
Lower level of the Spirit Jade Realm.
Just this level of cultivation made many feel ashamed, realizing they were even inferior to a mere child.
But why had the sect leader arranged for a senior brother at the upper level of the Spirit Jade Realm to face him?
Could it be that he could defeat a senior brother who was two levels above him?
The challenge began.
The two faced off, and one of them fell within just one exchange.
Everyone was stunned, for it was not the newcomer who had fallen, but that senior brother.
From the moment they clashed, it was clear that both had given their all, yet despite this, Yan Changting still defeated a senior brother who was two levels above him.
What a prodigy!
The Seven Lives Sect had found such a remarkable talent in cultivation.
Had the sect leader personally taught him techniques, perhaps grooming him to be the next generation's leader?
That night after joining the Seven Lives Sect, the sect leader presented a sword to Yan Changting as a reward for defeating his senior brother.
It was a White Longsword, devoid of any tassels or gemstone decorations on its hilt. The grip bore an engraving of a full moon, while celestial bodies were etched onto the crossguard. The blade itself was slender and elongated.
As Yan Changting caressed the longsword, he noticed two characters engraved on its blade...
"Xie Yue..."
"Yes, this Xie Yue may not be a powerful artifact, but it will be a good companion for you."
"Thank you, Master..."
With that, Yan Changting tightly gripped Xie Yue and pretended to perform a dance with it.
"Starting tomorrow, I will teach you sword techniques."
"Yes, Master."
...
Time passed quickly, and three years had gone by...
Looking back on these three years, Yan Changting often found himself at the edge of the cliff. Aside from the necessary time spent with his fellow disciples, he would be alone there.
Yan Changting's swordsmanship had matured significantly, and his Cultivation had not lagged behind; he reached the Spirit Realm at the age of fifteen.
Such an achievement was unmatched among his peers in Seven Lives Sect.
During the three-year Seven Lives Sect competition, Yan Changting, as the youngest in the Spirit Realm group, emerged victorious. Many female disciples cast admiring glances his way.
Now of age to tie his hair up, Yan Changting received affection from many beautiful senior and junior sisters. However, he still chose to practice swordplay alone at the cliff's edge.
No one knew what he was thinking or what he truly desired.
Life continued on; the Cultivation World was peaceful, with no significant events occurring.
However, the Master of the Sect seemed to sense some impending storm and punished Yan Changting to guard Qishan for Three Thousand Years, citing a violation of sect rules.
Such a severe punishment was nearly unheard of, yet how could this favored disciple...
With one young talent less, Yan Changting, Seven Lives Sect continued to operate as usual, though those maidens who admired him still remembered.
Yan Changting was personally escorted by the Master of the Sect to Qishan, where a barrier was set up. What difference did this mountain guarding for Three Thousand Years have from the land of eternal rest?
No matter how much the usually reticent Yan Changting expressed his anger or questioned his master, he received no answers.
Before long, news of the destruction of the Seven Lives Sect spread…
It was then that Yan Changting realized the Master of the Sect's intentions, and in order to remember this event, he took on an additional surname.
Yan Changting…
Afterward, during the Three Thousand Years of guarding the mountain, Yan Changting would occasionally awaken.
The only companion throughout those Three Thousand Years was Xie Yue…
All memories of the Seven Lives Sect and his master remained only with Xie Yue as a connection…
