When Chu Donglin pushed the door open and walked in again, the girl on the sofa trembled. 0

In her eyes, Chu Donglin was covered in blood. Several wounds were so deep that bone was visible, and one arm was grotesquely twisted behind him, making him look utterly miserable. 0

With a thud, Chu Donglin collapsed onto the floor, hitting it hard. 0

Fear and urgency instantly filled the girl's eyes as she jumped off the sofa and rushed to his side in a panic. 0

Looking at Chu Donglin, who was struggling on the blood-soaked floor, her face was filled with helplessness. 0

“Dad… Dad… what happened to you?” 0

On the floor, Chu Donglin seemed to be enduring some terrible torment, groaning in pain. His body, covered in wounds and black blood, writhed in agony. 0

The girl stood helplessly beside him, reaching out to help but unsure of what to do. For the first time, her face showed signs of anxiety. 0

She clenched her fists and stomped her feet anxiously, nearly on the verge of tears. 0

“Dad, what happened to you?” 0

The man's painful struggles continued for five or six minutes before the excruciating pain in Chu Donglin's mind gradually receded like a tide. 0

He lifted his blood-stained face and looked at the anxious girl beside him, managing a grim smile as he spoke his first words: “Shishi, you… you finally talked to me first.” 0

The girl looked at him helplessly, reaching out to help but afraid to touch his wounds. She was almost crying. “Dad, are you hurt?” 0

“It's nothing… nothing…” 0

Chu Donglin forced a smile and reassured her. “I ran into a Second-Stage Zombie and almost got killed… Ha… Who am I? I’m Chu Donglin! If it wants to kill me, it’s still a hundred years too early! I’m fine.” 0

He tried to lift his barely functioning right hand to stroke the girl's cheek. But looking at his blood-stained hand, he ultimately pulled it back. 0

"Stay... stay away from me, Shishi." 0

Chu Donglin looked at the girl beside him, breathing heavily. "Don't touch my blood; it might be infectious. There could be a virus in my bloodstream." 0

"And..." Chu Donglin pointed weakly towards the kitchen, where the aroma of rice wafted through the air. "Quickly... turn off the stove; the rice is going to burn." 0

He glanced at the girl, who seemed dazed and confused, and asked uncertainly, "Do you know how to turn off the gas stove?" 0

The girl lowered her head in thought and then nodded vigorously. 0

"Alright, then it's up to you." 0

Chu Donglin smiled faintly. "I can't move right now, so you'll have to feed the chickens. They've been hungry for so long; if we don't give them something soon, they'll starve." 0

"Listen to me: first, turn off the gas stove. There are bowls in the kitchen; scoop out a bowl of rice and soak it in warm water... I've already prepared the warm water; it's right next to you." 0

"Once you've soaked it, pour out the water and bring it to me. We can't feed the newborn chicks too much, or they'll burst. I need to check if the amount is right before you take the soaked rice to feed them... Do you understand?" 0

The girl stared at him blankly but nodded. 0

"Good, now go do it... Be careful and don't hurt yourself." 0

Watching her retreating figure, Chu Donglin felt a twinge of unease. 0

However, the girl did not disappoint him. Though a bit clumsy, she quickly turned off the gas and obediently followed Chu Donglin's instructions, bringing out a bowl of rice soaked in warm water. 0

At that moment, Chu Donglin had already slipped into a semi-conscious state, lying on the ground and breathing erratically. 0

Dark red blood stained the entrance carpet and spread across the smooth tile floor into the house. 0

However, the blood from the wound had stopped, no longer dripping. The dark red stains ceased to spread and quickly dried up, solidifying into a disgusting black on the floor. 0

The girl approached with a bowl in her hands, looking at the half-conscious Chu Donglin with some trepidation. 0

She reached out to nudge him awake but recalled his instructions and hesitated to touch the bloodied man. For a moment, she could only stand there, caught between action and inaction. 0

But soon, Chu Donglin noticed the girl beside him. He forced his eyes open and looked at her standing there in a daze. Weakly, he smiled and asked, "Did you finish?" 0

The girl nodded obediently. 0

"That's good. Let me see how much porridge you prepared." 0

Shishi gently set down the bowl so that Chu Donglin could see what was inside. 0

Chu Donglin glanced at it and weakly said, "A little... too much..." 0

The girl could only scoop out a bit with her hand. 0

"Still too much..." 0

She scooped out another small portion. 0

"That's about right... about right," Chu Donglin murmured, staring blankly at the girl beside him. "Remember, feed the chickens this much from now on—three meals. One in the morning, one in the afternoon, one in the evening." 0

"The flashlight is in my room's drawer; you can use it for light when moving around at night. I might need to rest for a while and can't help you anymore. You’ll have to eat instant noodles by yourself." 0

"There are snacks and chocolates in that backpack, along with cola, Sprite, milk tea, and milk. Take whatever you want; just don’t let yourself go hungry." 0

"Close the door tightly and don’t go outside. Remember to lock it..." Chu Donglin struggled to toss his keys over to her. "There are gloves in the room; wear them when you take the keys. Don’t touch the blood." 0

"Above all, remember this: no matter what happens while I am unconscious, you must never touch my body or the blood that flows from me. There are viruses inside that could infect you... Remember, this is very important! Do not touch anything! It could be deadly!" 0

After murmuring this final warning, Chu Donglin could no longer withstand the overwhelming fatigue. Darkness enveloped him, and he completely lost consciousness. 0

He did not know how long he had been out. When Chu Donglin finally awoke again, he felt a warm, gentle energy softly sweeping over his entire body. 0

Opening his eyes, he noticed that due to the angle of the light, a beam of cool moonlight was streaming in through the window and illuminating him. 0

The moonlight, which usually gave off a sense of cold desolation, now warmed his body, making him feel as if a gentle energy was slowly being absorbed into him. 0

Could a Zombie actually absorb the energy of moonlight?! 0

This realization startled Chu Donglin. Although this energy was so weak it could almost be ignored, its persistence was noteworthy. If this continued for an extended period, would those Ordinary Zombies wandering the streets eventually accumulate enough energy to evolve to the first stage? 0

If all the Ordinary Zombies in the world evolved to the first stage, even an ordinary First-Stage Zombie would possess combat abilities comparable to that of an average human. In one-on-one encounters, an ordinary First-Stage Zombie would not pose much of a threat to armed humans, but their terrifying numbers would compensate for everything. 0

At that point, how much living space would remain for humanity, which had already been compressed significantly? 0
