In the quiet room, Shishi sat on the sofa with a serious expression, her face tense and wrinkled as if she were experiencing a thrilling battle.
Across from her, a girl named Snow remained calm and indifferent, quietly waiting for Shishi's decision.
On the table between them stood a tall stack of blocks.
At that moment, Shishi hesitated, her hand trembling as she reached out. After a long struggle, she finally pulled a block from the stack.
"Ha..."
Looking at the wobbly stack that had not toppled over, Shishi finally revealed a relaxed smile.
She playfully placed the block on top of the stack and smiled at Snow. "Snow Sister, it's your turn."
The precarious stack seemed ready to collapse at any moment, but Snow merely glanced at her coldly. Without hesitation, she extended her right hand and gently pulled a block from the stack.
With a soft sound, the stack swayed but ultimately remained standing.
Snow, with an expressionless face, placed the block on top of the stack and looked at Shishi, signaling her turn.
Shishi's face stiffened as she gazed at the swaying tower. She reached out with her right hand but hesitated again.
After a moment of standoff, just as Shishi gritted her teeth and decided to pull a block, the door swung open with a loud bang.
"I almost didn't make it back..."
Amidst the murmurs of complaints, Chu Donglin walked in, looking utterly exhausted. "There really is a monster under the Li River. Thankfully, it didn't eat me. Otherwise, I wouldn't have made it back."
Following closely behind him was a drenched White Wolf.
However, the once majestic White Wolf now resembled a drowned rat, its fur soaked and clinging to its body, looking more like a mangy dog.
Chu Donglin's sudden entrance caught the girl, Shishi, off guard, but her surprise quickly turned into a joyful smile.
"Dad! You're back!"
With a cheerful shout, she leaped off the sofa and rushed toward the door where Chu Donglin stood.
In her excitement, she failed to notice the blocks on the table. In her haste, the hem of her dress brushed against the precariously stacked blocks.
Crash—
A dull thud echoed as she instinctively reached out to save them but could only watch helplessly as the wobbling blocks tumbled down before her.
Rectangular wooden pieces scattered across the floor, with a few rolling off the table and landing on the ground.
Staring at the mess of fallen blocks, Shishi's outstretched hand froze in mid-air.
She gazed at the toppled blocks before her, a hint of sadness flickering across her face.
After a moment's pause, she bent down and silently began picking up the scattered blocks, determined to rebuild the original structure of her Mo Building on the table.
The submissive appearance was akin to a poor worker who had finally managed to build a tall building, only for it to be crushed underfoot by a passing monster, forcing him to start all over again.
On the other side, the girl lunged forward, wanting to hug Chu Donglin, but he startled and dodged away.
"Idiot Shishi, I'm soaked all over. Do you want to dirty my clothes? Get away from me."
The girl smiled brightly, stretching out her arms for a hug, undeterred. "It doesn't matter; Dad washes the clothes anyway... Hehe... Dad, hug me."
"Hug your head. Sit still and don't move. I'll hug you after I change."
After tapping Shishi on the head, Chu Donglin walked toward his bedroom. "You should learn from your Snow Sister; it would be better if you stayed calm. Look at her—she's not even excited to see me back. Isn't that nice?"
Hearing her name called, the girl who was rebuilding Block paused and instinctively looked up.
Then she saw Chu Donglin standing at the door, completely drenched.
Tilting her head slightly, she revealed a dazed expression. "Oh, you're back..."
"…Did you just realize that?"
Her companion's obliviousness left Chu Donglin speechless.
He shook his head and turned to walk into his bedroom, starting to change into dry clothes.
In the living room, Shishi's surprised voice echoed.
"Hey? This Big Dog... Dad, did you pick up this Big Dog? It's so ugly."
Even the most majestic White Wolf looked no different from a mangy dog when its fur was soaked and clinging to its skin.
With the girl's surprised voice, White Wolf let out a low growl of dissatisfaction.
However, under Chu Donglin's imposing presence, it dared not do anything, allowing Girl to circle around it.
"Dad, why didn't you bring back a prettier one? This Big Dog is really too ugly."
As the girl complained, Chu Donglin changed into clean clothes and tossed his wet outfit into the bathroom to be washed.
"You think it's ugly now because its fur is all wet. Once it dries, you won't think that way."
Saying this, Chu Donglin sat down on the sofa and invited Girl to sit beside him. He asked, "While I was away, has Shishi been behaving?"
Although Chu Donglin had only been gone for less than three hours, so much had happened that he couldn't help but worry about how Girl had been during that time.
"Did you eat your meals properly? Did you feed the chickens? You didn't run around everywhere, did you?"
In response to Chu Donglin's inquiries, the girl nodded repeatedly.
"Shishi has been very good. It didn't run around at all, and I made sure to feed the chickens so they weren't hungry."
"Ha ha... Shishi is indeed the best."
Chu Donglin smiled as he gently patted the girl's head, encouraging her.
Then he turned to the girl sitting across from him, who was still cold and distant, "Xue, have there been any unusual occurrences lately?"
The girl looked up, glancing at him with indifference. After a moment of thought, she replied, "No."
After a pause, she added, "Well, maybe something strange..."
Chu Donglin stared at her in disbelief, feeling powerless. "So is there or isn't there?"
The girl continued to look at him coldly, pondering for a long time before finally nodding. "Yes."
"What happened? Were you attacked by powerful Zombies?"
She shook her head, furrowing her brows as if confused. "There was no attack; it's just... I seem to have remembered some strange things."
"Strange things?"
The girl's words surprised Chu Donglin slightly. "What kind of things?"
Xue thought for a moment and began to recount a peculiar dream she had. "I saw some strange things and some odd people, but I'm not quite sure what they were..."
After a pause, the girl looked at Chu Donglin with a puzzled expression. "And I saw you."
At her description, Chu Donglin's face showed a look of astonishment.
According to what the girl said, this should be a moment of recalling past events. But why did Xue still have a cold expression? Did the revival of her memories have no effect on her at all?
"Xue, tell me, how did you feel when you saw those things?" Chu Donglin asked seriously, trying to gauge the girl's state of mind.
However, Xue merely stared blankly at him. After a moment, she slowly shook her head. "I felt nothing..."
Chu Donglin was taken aback. "Felt nothing? How is that possible? You recalled your past experiences; how could you not feel anything?"
The girl tilted her head and thought for a long time before finally nodding. "It's not that I felt completely nothing; it just felt a bit strange."
"Hmm? Like what?"
"It's complicated... uncomfortable... an unpleasant feeling."
She furrowed her brows tightly, unconsciously pressing on her chest as she murmured, "When I think of those things, there's a painful sensation here, but there's clearly no injury; I can't find any wounds... yet it hurts so much."
After a pause, she repeated it with a serious expression. "It hurts a lot."
Seeing her like this, Chu Donglin let out a sigh of relief. "I thought you had developed a new personality... Since you're still the original personality, that's good. It might be because your evolution level isn't high enough yet, so you haven't fully recovered. We'll take it slow; you'll be fine in the future."
With a clap of his hands, Chu Donglin pointed to the White Wolf, who was crouched by the sofa. "Now, let me introduce our new family member. This fellow is named Baymax, my newly found mode of transportation. With it, we won't need to ride motorcycles anymore."
Xue glanced at the drenched White Wolf and keenly noticed the killing intent emanating from it, as well as its blood-red eyes.
"Zombie?"
"That's right."
Chu Donglin nodded and smiled. "And this fellow is a Second-Stage Zombie. Although it's a bit slow-witted, its combat power is significantly stronger than that of an ordinary Second-Stage Zombie. With its addition, hunting other Second-Stage Zombies will be much easier for us."
He then began to outline his plan. "Regarding hunting Second-Stage Zombies, I have some new ideas. There are clusters of Second-Stage Zombies in the urban area, and random attacks could lead to chaos. However, we can head to the remote suburbs."
"There are countless Zombies in those public universities in the suburbs, and the density of Second-Stage Zombies is much lower than in the city. There, we can hunt freely without worrying about triggering chaos and attracting the siege of other Second-Stage Zombies."
Xue glanced at him but lowered her head to continue building her Block, offering no opinion.
Shishi rested her chin on her hand, staring wide-eyed at the White Wolf, seemingly very intrigued.
Seeing that no one responded and the living room fell silent, Chu Donglin awkwardly cleared his throat and waved his hand decisively.
"That's settled then; we'll set off for the suburbs tomorrow." (To be continued...)
