The biting cold wind stirred the massive sign of the Resort.
The neon lights were supposed to radiate a dazzling and enchanting glow in the darkness, but in this post-apocalyptic world, it had become silent and desolate, with not a single light flickering.
Chu Donglin furrowed his brow.
The massive body of the White Wolf stood before the entrance of the Resort, yet Chu Donglin's gaze lingered for a long time on the number of Humvees parked across the road.
He walked over, silently examining these modified military Humvees.
Then he caught a strange scent.
It was faint yet repulsive, an evil odor filled with an odd essence, identical to the smell of the monsters that had attacked Chu Donglin before, causing him to frown.
Chu Donglin's eyes sharpened with vigilance.
He slowly approached the parked military Humvees, his mental energy gradually spreading outward, covering the ground around him.
At the moment combat erupted, he could tear apart the asphalt road, turning countless shattered stones into sharp projectiles to overwhelm and destroy any enemies.
However, there was no battle, no enemies.
As he drew closer to the military Humvees, what appeared before him were not those loathsome and bizarre creatures or any foes, but two corpses.
Twisted and grotesque.
Dark red blood flowed from their bodies, as if they had been slashed by a sharp blade multiple times, with intersecting wounds covering their skin.
The strange scent that Chu Donglin detected emanated from these two corpses.
He opened the door of the military Humvee and looked at the two humans left behind to guard the vehicle, who had met a tragic fate. Confusion filled his eyes.
They were clearly two humans. Why did their blood carry the same strange odor as that of the monsters he encountered earlier?
That faint sense of evil, the repulsive chill of madness... Could it be that these two were attacked and killed by those monsters?
But those monsters had no sharp claws. Even though their teeth were sharp, there were no signs of bites on these corpses.
The wounds left on them resembled those inflicted by a sharp blade, as if they had been brutally hacked to death.
Chu Donglin continued to search for possible clues but found nothing.
Behind him, White Wolf suddenly let out an anxious growl.
“Roar!!!”
Within that massive roar, there seemed to be a hint of fear.
Chu Donglin felt a jolt in his temple, and instinctively jumped back several meters.
“Ehehehe…”
The eerie laughter echoed once more in Chu Donglin's ears.
However, nothing had happened at the spot where he had previously stood, as if his actions had been an overreaction.
Yet, when Chu Donglin suddenly lifted his head, he caught a glimpse of a corner of a red hem of a dress flashing on the wall of the Resort before disappearing.
"Hehehe..."
The strange and enchanting laughter rang out again, gradually fading away until it became ethereal and inaudible.
Chu Donglin's expression darkened.
He rubbed his aching brow; for some reason, ever since he approached this Resort, his forehead had been throbbing with a dull pain. His temples pulsed intermittently, and even the flow of blood felt accelerated.
As silence enveloped the surroundings, he could clearly hear the loud thumping of his own heart.
"Did you notice anything just now?"
Chu Donglin turned to look at the White Wolf behind him, rubbing his sore brow as he asked.
The White Wolf glanced at him and let out a whimper, seemingly frightened but saying nothing.
Of course, a wolf couldn't respond to him—no matter that it was a Second Stage Zombie.
In front of the empty mansion, Chu Donglin stared at the silent Resort before him, silently massaging his aching brow. Suddenly, he took a deep breath and strode toward the grand entrance of the mansion.
Without any hesitation, he raised his right foot and kicked the large door of the villa with great force.
The immense power of the Third-Stage Zombie surged forth without reservation, and with a thunderous sound, the massive iron door was sent flying by Chu Donglin's kick.
The two twisted iron doors, along with some chunks of cement wall, soared into the air before crashing heavily onto the asphalt road inside the villa, producing a deafening thud.
Chu Donglin's gaze swept across the empty villa, his brow furrowing even tighter.
The last time he and Liu Xiner had come here, this villa, which housed over a thousand people, had been bustling with life and energy.
However, now under the night sky, the villa was silent and devoid of sound; not a single lamp could be seen. The empty entrance showed no sign of any guards, only a few dust-covered sculptures stood on either side of the path, appearing somewhat eerie and menacing in the darkness.
Chu Donglin stepped into the villa, his feet landing on the clean asphalt surface.
Behind him, the enormous White Wolf poked its head in, eager to follow him inside.
However, Chu Donglin waved his hand to signal it to stop.
"You stay outside and don't move."
Taking a deep breath, Chu Donglin let his hands hang at his sides. "There's something strange about this villa; I can't guarantee your safety."
The White Wolf hesitated for a moment, seemingly deeply affected by his words. With a whimper filled with frustration, it obediently withdrew its head back outside.
Indeed, in front of the Third-Stage Zombie, even the powerful Second-Stage Zombie lacked intimidation.
Even the speed that White Wolf prided himself on was no longer an advantage in front of the successfully advanced Chu Donglin.
As long as Chu Donglin was willing, he could increase his speed to over a hundred yards in a short time, almost like a bolt of lightning.
However, such acceleration could not be sustained, just as White Wolf could not maintain his nearly two hundred yards maximum speed for long; it was not a conventional speed.
Understanding Bai Chu and Dongling's true strength, White Wolf did not struggle but instead withdrew his head in defeat and obediently returned to the entrance of the villa to wait for Chu Donglin's return.
After sending away White Wolf, Chu Donglin stood alone on the empty road leading to the villa, took a deep breath, and strode towards the interior of the villa.
Walking further in, there was a fork in the road.
One path led to the parking lot near Lotus Pond.
The other path went straight to the square, behind which were the residential buildings of the villa. The vast majority of guests who came to vacation at the villa stayed there.
After the apocalypse arrived, Liushan Shu gathered many Survivors here, and those buildings became places for him to accommodate them, making it the area with the most active humans. (To be continued...)
