With the dark muzzle of Ban Guozhi's gun pointed at him, Chu Donglin felt utterly helpless.
"Old Man Ban, can you please stop being so stubborn? I really have nothing to do with Sister Qingya. Please don’t force me, okay?"
Ban Guozhi looked at him coldly, as if he were a filthy, weak worm, his eyes and face filled with a deep-seated disgust.
"I raised Ya from childhood, cradled her in my hands like a fragile treasure. Do you know how much I care for her? How much she means to me?"
"Watching her grow up, seeing that little girl who always followed her father around finally blossom into a beautiful young woman, witnessing countless outstanding young men fervently pursuing her—do you know how happy and yet how pained that makes me?"
As he held the gun, tears gradually filled Ban Guozhi's eyes.
"Do you know how much it hurts? She is such a lovely daughter! Such an obedient daughter! And yet I have to watch other men take her away while I can do nothing... Can you understand my feelings?"
Chu Donglin helplessly shrugged his shoulders and said, "I can..."
"You can what? You don’t even have a daughter! How can you understand me?"
Ban Guozhi's eyes were filled with tears, his aged face streaked with sorrow.
"I’ve thought about many possibilities, countless times. No matter how I think about it, I just can't casually hand over my daughter. She is so exceptional, so adorable, so beautiful; she deserves only the best man in this world. Otherwise, I cannot just let her go."
"I have always thought this way! I have always believed this!"
Ban Guozhi shouted desperately. Painful tears streamed down his face.
"But I never expected that my lovely daughter—my outstanding daughter, my beautiful daughter, my perfect daughter—would be taken away by some cowardly scum! Damn it! And that scum is such a weakling! He was scared off by just a few of my words… Can you understand my thoughts? Do you know how much pain I'm in?"
Chu Donglin sighed. Seeing the old man venting his emotions for a while, he finally managed to calm down a bit and said,
"Old Man Ban, I also have a daughter, so I can understand..."
"Damn it! What did you just say? Say that again if you dare!"
Ban Guozhi, who had calmed down slightly, suddenly sprang up as if electrified. His eyes bulged with rage as he lunged at Chu Donglin. "You have a daughter? Impossible! If Ya had a child, she would definitely tell me! That child isn’t Ya’s, right? Do you have another woman?"
A group of warriors rushed forward to restrain the emotionally unstable Ban Guozhi. Despite the strength of seven or eight young fighters, they struggled to hold back the enraged old man.
He thrashed about, roaring in anger, "You definitely have other women, don’t you? You scum! Why don’t you just die! Go die already!"
The warriors fought to keep him subdued, with several gripping his hands tightly to prevent him from firing. If he had the chance, this furious old man would undoubtedly turn Chu Donglin into a sieve in an instant.
"General Ban, calm down! Calm down!"
"General, please stay calm. Don't act impulsively!"
"Yes, General, this impulsiveness won't do. If you really hurt your son-in-law, how will you explain it to your daughter? Even if you don't care about her, think about the child in her womb."
Despite their earnest pleas, Ban Guozhi continued to struggle violently, his eyes bulging as he roared, "Kill him! Kill them all! Keeping scum like this is just polluting the world! You’re not allowed to stop me; let me take him down! My daughter is so outstanding that even with a child, countless men would be crying and begging to marry her. She doesn’t need to waste her life on trash like him... I want to kill him! Ahhhhh! Get out of my way! Or I'll have you all court-martialed!"
No matter how much Ban Guozhi raged and threatened, the warriors dared not let go.
It was no joke; if they released this old man in his current state of fury, it would surely lead to disaster.
Meanwhile, Chu Donglin shook his head and sighed helplessly.
"I really have nothing to do with Sister Qingya. Whether you believe it or not, old man, everything I said before was just to draw out your words. If you don’t believe me, you can ask Sister Qingya; she will tell you everything."
With that, Chu Donglin shook his head in silence and turned to leave.
"You’re too agitated right now; calm down first. I’ll come back to talk later."
And just like that, he turned and ran away.
The group of warriors exchanged glances. Shu Yuyao instinctively raised her sniper rifle to intercept Chu Donglin but hesitated at the moment her finger was on the trigger.
She glanced at the furious and agitated Ban Guozhi and felt that there was some truth in Chu Donglin's words; it was better to let Ban Guozhi calm down first.
"General Ban, please don't get agitated. I think this so-called Chu Donglin, the Zombie, might actually be telling the truth."
Shu Yuyao walked over to Ban Guozhi, who was pinned to the ground, and advised, "If it comes to that, we can wait until your daughter wakes up and ask her. Then everything will be clear, won't it?"
Watching helplessly as Chu Donglin escaped while he could do nothing, Ban Guozhi's eyes turned blood red with rage, nearly causing him to choke on his anger.
"What else is there to ask?! That bastard knows every detail about Ya's birthmark. How could he possibly have no connection at all? Let me go! I want to kill him!"
Seeing Ban Guozhi's furious expression, Shu Yuyao sighed and called for the military doctor accompanying them.
"Dr. Liu, could you please check on Sister Qingya and see if she is really pregnant?"
The military doctor, known as Dr. Liu, was a middle-aged man wearing glasses. He nodded seriously and took a wrist device from his medical kit to put on the unconscious Ban Qingya.
This was a diagnostic tool invented a few years ago. Although it had limited scanning capabilities, it was sufficient for general ailments or checking health conditions.
Moreover, its portability made it an essential tool that many doctors carried with them.
One of its functions was to determine whether a woman was pregnant. (To be continued...)
