January 1, 2005, night.
In the dark night sky, snowflakes began to fall gently.
The howling cold wind once again ravaged the wasteland outside the city, yet the Survivor Base, which continued to shine even under the night sky, completely ignored the biting chill and was filled with a lively and festive atmosphere.
Fireworks occasionally lit up the night sky above the base, bursting into dazzling displays that nearly illuminated the entire darkness. Inside the base, people crowded the streets like those in a bustling city, all stepping out of their homes to celebrate the first New Year since the arrival of the Apocalyptic Disaster.
Jugglers and magicians set up stalls along the roads, their entertaining tricks drawing curious children gathered around, captivated by their performances.
Of course, vendors selling various foods and toys in the night market were also a common sight.
However, most of all were those who brought their families and friends to joyfully enjoy this place they had built with their own hands.
Although this Survivor Base was not particularly large, it housed around three hundred thousand people, making its population nearly comparable to that of a small city.
Nearby was a border town within Qianzhou, located in southwestern China, not particularly prosperous.
Fortunately, a garrison from one of the Five Major Military Districts was stationed nearby.
So when the apocalyptic virus broke out, despite countless casualties from Zombie attacks, the military quickly responded and rescued all those they could. They also managed to quell the first wave of Zombie Sea assaults.
Afterward, under the watchful eyes of Zombies, human Survivors swiftly established their own base outside the city. Using this newly built base as a core, the military continuously sent personnel to nearby cities to rescue Survivors.
In this apocalypse, gunfire was the most powerful force.
To ordinary people, terrifying Zombies seemed weak and vulnerable when faced with military tanks and missiles. A single missile could take down rows of Zombies in an instant.
If it weren't for the bizarre and troublesome Mutated Zombies that had evolved in both the wilderness and the city, humanity would have long since reclaimed the urban areas.
Nevertheless, this base had managed to suppress the development of Zombies within the city, preventing those strange Mutated Zombies from taking control of the situation.
Moreover, they continuously dispatched troops to nearby cities to rescue numerous Dodos.
In the five months since the apocalypse began, this base had been focused on rescuing Survivors.
As the base gradually grew stronger, its power increased as well, even managing to reclaim about one-tenth of the city.
Had it not been for the message from Jiang Hai demanding that all remaining troops nationwide converge at Jiang Hai as soon as possible, the military leader controlling the base would have already planned to start reclaiming the city after the New Year.
However, with Jiang Hai's call to arms arriving, most of the troops were dispatched, making it difficult for the remaining forces to reclaim cities occupied by Zombies in a short time.
Before leaving, however, the main force did leave behind many weapons and ammunition for those who remained to protect themselves. They also assigned a company of soldiers to train newly recruited recruits.
In a few months, when these new soldiers completed their training, this newly established militia would sweep away all Zombies in the city and reclaim their former homes.
But before that, they naturally needed to celebrate New Year's Day properly.
Today marked the Gregorian New Year's Day, with two months still remaining until the Lunar New Year. For those who had endured so much suffering, a celebration was necessary to lift their spirits.
Thus, tonight's New Year's Day festivities became a plan laid out on the desk of the base leader and quickly came into action.
However, while people within Wangcheng Base were joyfully celebrating and spending their first holiday after the apocalypse with family and friends, a group of unfamiliar guests appeared on the highway not far from Wangcheng.
On the icy road, a thick layer of pure white snow covered the ground.
The pristine snow stretched from the horizon to beneath the wheels of the vehicles, creating a cold expanse of white.
The convoy moved silently and steadily, with only the distinct tire tracks left by the vehicles breaking the stillness of the thick snow.
There were three vehicles in total, all heavily modified military off-road trucks, practical means of transportation in this apocalyptic world, capable of protecting those inside as they traversed through the Zombie Sea.
Thanks to the presence of the Wangcheng Military District, not only had the power of Zombies been suppressed in this area, but several key highways that served as vital routes had also been cleared. There were no abandoned cars littering the roads, allowing the convoy to progress with minimal obstruction.
A cold wind blew as the doors of the vehicles opened, ruffling the hair of several serious-looking soldiers inside. Despite being in this frigid environment that would make anyone shiver, there was no sign of retreat on their faces; each soldier bore an expression as resolute as stone.
On the side doors of these three vehicles was a strange design painted in bright red.
The design depicted a screeching Flying Snake, its head adorned with a pair of wings, appearing fierce and terrifying—clearly not a benign creature.
Anyone who encountered this convoy would tremble at just the sight of that graffiti, hesitant to provoke those within.
This marking represented a powerful force in Qianzhou, second only to the Wangcheng Legion. The military presence of Wangcheng had suppressed many rising Mutated Zombies within Qianzhou, allowing human factions here to develop significantly.
Unlike Wocheng, where humans were at a disadvantage, the people in Qianzhou, though overall weaker than Zombies, had not reached a point where their living space was completely constricted.
In Qianzhou, this graffiti symbolized formidable deterrence; few dared to offend this power.
However, the terrifying creatures lurking in the wilderness on either side of the road felt no such fear.
The creatures that had barely survived the Apocalyptic Disaster months ago were now grotesquely transformed by the Zombie Virus, their appearances horrifyingly altered.
These beings, dragging their decayed and broken bodies, wandered the wasteland like the terrifying Undead Creatures from legends. They should have long been dead, yet they continued to cling to life in a pitiful state.
In the quiet Snowy Wasteland, a convoy moved steadily forward. The vehicles left two long trails in the snow, heading toward the human Survivor Base not far from this Wangcheng member.
However, the Zombie Monsters lurking in the wilderness would not allow them to pass easily.
"Roar..." A hoarse growl echoed as more than a dozen wolves with shattered and decaying skulls suddenly burst from the snow, their murky red eyes wide open as they charged madly toward the convoy in the center of the snow.
Most of these wretched creatures had broken bodies, with some even missing half of their heads, revealing the rotting brains within their skulls.
Yet these beings, whose fur had turned an eerie shade of sickly green, were still alive. They launched an attack on the convoy with their monstrous Undead-like forms.
In fact, to some extent, their strength had significantly increased, making them formidable even against ordinary humans.
Bang—Bang—Bang—
Gunfire erupted in quick succession. Faced with these bizarre and terrifying Zombies, the warriors inside the off-road vehicles remained remarkably calm.
With indifferent expressions, they raised their weapons and steadily pulled the triggers, sending deadly bullets into the bodies of the Zombies.
As the convoy gradually distanced itself, muffled gunshots rang out beneath the night sky, accompanied by the pained whimpers of Zombies. Only those attempting to assault the convoy cried out in agony before collapsing helplessly to the ground.
Despite achieving such results by personally taking down over ten Mutated Zombie wolves, the two soldiers who fired their weapons wore expressions of tranquility.
There was no reaction, neither pride nor arrogance, as if nothing had happened at all. The convoy continued to silently escort the vehicle in the middle along the snow-covered highway.
Finally, the Human Base, which still shone with lively lights even in the darkness, revealed itself among the mountains ahead. Faint bursts of fireworks could be seen rising into the sky above the base.
Those were celebratory fireworks, a rare sight in the apocalypse, dazzling and intoxicating.
The convoy came to a stop. The lead off-road vehicle's door opened, and a soldier dressed in a thick coat approached the middle vehicle, gently tapping on the window. "Sister, we've arrived at Wangcheng Military District."
Three seconds later, a groggy voice came from inside the off-road vehicle. "Wangcheng Military District? Already? That was fast!"
Then, a pale hand opened the window, and a girl with disheveled hair poked her head out.
Looking at the dark night sky outside, Yumo Sha rubbed her sleepy eyes and said, "Oh, so it's already this late?"
Tilting her head for a few seconds, she addressed her subordinate. "Alright, I got it. Let's keep moving. I'll fix my disguise and then go meet the boss of Wangcheng Base... um... what was their name again? Ah... never mind, I'll figure it out later. I need to get dressed first."
With that, the girl closed the window, shutting out the cold air from outside and sealing in the warmth of the vehicle.
The soldier who received the order returned to his previous off-road vehicle and waved his hand. "Move out."
With a solemn command, the convoy continued its journey. (To be continued...)
