The night was composed of darkness, cold winds, and heavy snow, creating a desolate atmosphere.
This was the largest Survivor Base of humanity, home to hundreds of thousands of people.
There were elderly individuals with white hair, adorable children, strong young men, and beautiful girls... This place was a miniature city, a beacon of hope after the apocalypse.
Many times, just watching the peaceful expressions of these residents brought Liu Mengying a sense of satisfaction and calm, easing her tense spirit.
Wasn't it for protecting these serene smiles that she and so many soldiers in the base fought so hard? Every soldier had sworn to fight to the death to safeguard such smiles, vowing never to retreat even in the face of the most terrifying monsters.
Yet now, all of that had come to an end.
A brilliant golden light rose in the night sky, dazzling and captivating the attention of all living beings.
In the abandoned Jianghai City, countless Zombies looked up in confusion at the bright Golden Flame streaking across the sky, their faces blank with bewilderment.
Their limited intelligence was not enough for them to comprehend what it meant... even though they were within the blast radius of a nuclear bomb.
The humans inside the base knew much more.
At least when that golden flame tore through the sky and descended, they all displayed expressions of terror, scattering in panic as they desperately tried to flee from the area.
Although the explosion of the nuclear bomb had not reached them directly, the intense white light visible from a city away had illuminated the entire night sky in an instant. Everyone understood what that approaching flame signified.
It was humanity's most terrifying High-Tech Weapon, instilling horror in their hearts.
Chu Jianguo's hand instinctively tightened around the balcony railing. His eyes were fixed on the approaching Golden Flame, filled with a sense of despair.
"How... is this possible..."
Why were humanity's Nuclear Weapons flying toward this place? Did someone want to erase the lives of over two hundred thousand people? But what benefit would that bring him?
This question, Chu Jianguo feared, he might never understand.
Because the golden light had descended.
It was the chaotic wind blowing from the Abyss of Death, the mournful melody played by the Undead, a light of slaughter that destroyed everything, extinguishing all hope.
A massive radiance erupted within the base.
Chu Donglin's body froze.
He watched helplessly as the enormous Golden Flame streaked across the sky, landing in a distant city at the other end of the base, pain evident in his eyes.
"Absolutely not..."
His hand tightened around the twisted sword, letting out a heart-wrenching Roar that instilled fear in all who heard it.
"This cannot be the ending! It absolutely cannot!"
A pale beam of light surged upward.
The immense radiance pierced through the clouds, nearly illuminating the entire night sky, even freezing distant space for a moment.
In that instant, everything came to a halt.
In the air, the wind ceased to blow, and the clouds hung like a curtain suspended in time.
On the ground, the expressions on people's faces, the swirling dust, the explosive light... even the shockwave from the blast froze in that moment of stillness.
A pair of black wings emerged from Chu Donglin's back.
The fabric of his clothing tore apart as the black wings slowly grew and unfurled from his back, becoming the only object still in motion within the frozen space.
Then, a second pair, a third pair, a fourth pair... a total of six pairs of black wings spread across Chu Donglin's entire back. The twelve black wings gently unfurling beneath the night sky exuded an eerie malevolence... and a shocking beauty.
Chilling, sinister, terrifying, yet beautiful.
A completely contradictory sensation, an incredibly chaotic yet perfect blend that created a strange experience for those who beheld it.
A playful voice echoed in Chu Donglin's ear.
"My dear Chu Donglin, do you finally feel it? The final trap I have laid for you."
An enchanting image appeared before Chu Donglin.
With graceful steps, she was the epitome of beauty. The woman with a gentle smile was the most beautiful yet terrifying being in this world, a final message left for Chu Donglin by Nyarlathotep, the Evil God.
Her soul had long since turned to ashes, but the strategies and images she left behind continued to influence everything in this world. No one knew what those things would trigger, but they were indeed having an effect now, enough to save him from the imminent crisis.
This was Nyarlathotep's plan devised before the enemies entered Earth. Now, the zombies that filled the world, though part of the Evil God's scheme, were being utilized by her and were about to become Chu Donglin's strongest spear, piercing through everything.
"The Zombie Completion Plan... Hehe... With the entire world's zombies as a price, offering billions of zombies' Essence of Life, could we create the strongest Zombie King? I am quite looking forward to it."
She glanced at Chu Donglin and suddenly laughed again. "However, if you don't want to fall into endless bloodlust and become a schizophrenic amalgamation of the consciousness of tens or hundreds of billions of living beings, you don't have to absorb this power. But if you do that, it might be a bit too much... Will you absorb it?"
In the gradually fading image of Acha, Chu Donglin let out a cold laugh.
Humans were undoubtedly the rulers of this planet.
They occupied the most advantageous lands, built their cities and homes, and relentlessly compressed the living spaces of other creatures, occasionally displaying a surplus of sympathy that was nothing more than false kindness under their power.
In this world, there has never been true love between species.
The survival of the fittest played out in every corner of this world.
Strong frogs preyed on weak mosquitoes, while even stronger snakes hunted frogs. Cats could play with snakes at will, yet cats were merely toys for humans.
The gradual escalation of the Food Chain forms the foundation of the entire Ecosystem.
However, when an external virus alters all living beings and devastates this Ecosystem, what kind of terrifying destruction can those mutated monsters bring about?
Such questions may only be answered by humanity a century after the apocalypse.
But tonight, amidst the desolate ruins and crumbling walls, in the wilderness of this city’s remnants, a pale beam of light pierces the heavens. The power of the Evil God howls beneath the night sky, its dreadful aura nearly spreading across the entire world... Undoubtedly, something is changing.
Swirling dark clouds obscure the night sky, and the shimmering starlight is swallowed by the gloom, leaving only cold darkness for the earth below.
It is now January 2006, one hundred sixty-five days since the end of the world began.
Half a year has been a torment for the entire world. It has also been a calamity.
Yet all those who have miraculously survived this disaster are fortunate. For when that invisible force swept across the globe, enveloping the entire planet, they remained unscathed, merely watching in confusion as the Zombies writhed in agony. They could not comprehend what madness had overtaken these monsters.
Essence of Life... or rather, the most crucial component formed by Zombie power—the pain from which the virus was drawn—enveloped all Zombies.
They wailed and suffered, rolling on the ground before eventually losing consciousness.
If someone were to stand in Outer Space and gaze down at Earth, they would clearly see countless thin Dark Red beams rising from every corner of this blue planet, soaring into the sky along long trajectories toward that Coastal City in the wilderness.
In that moment, Earth was almost shrouded in Dark Red light, resembling a sphere wrapped in a net.
Then, the Dark Red light gathered from all over the world converged into a single point. In the night sky of Jiang Hai, it slowly formed a massive Dark Red sun.
At this moment, Jiang Hai remained in absolute stillness.
Within a hundred-mile radius, the space was frozen; not even a whisper of wind could be felt, as if it were in another world. Those outside the area could clearly see the leaves suspended in mid-air at the edge of the frozen zone.
"Submit, Hastur."
A man's voice echoed coldly in the absolute stillness, carrying a chilling and merciless intent to kill.
The Dark Red sun hung in the night sky, continuing to expand, trying to grow larger.
But it was already enough.
For Chu Donglin, this energy was sufficient.
He raised his sword and charged into the still night sky, his twelve pairs of black wings extending behind him, making his silhouette resemble that of a demon from legends, radiating an aura of evil that sent shivers down spines.
A pale beam of light enveloped the blood-red sun, its dazzling brilliance nearly piercing through everything in this world, even forcing the darkness to retreat.
In the night sky, the man's cold shout shattered all that existed.
"Beiluoshimen!"
Then, the twisted sword pierced the blood-red sun, opening a passage to another space beyond the distant starry sky, summoning forth a terrifying power.
Mighty flames descended from the night sky.
The essence of hundreds of billions of Zombie Viruses, abandoned by Chu Donglin, coated these flames with dreadful strength.
As they fell, they would incinerate all enemies on this earth—every foe that Chu Donglin sought to eliminate.
The Evil God beneath the earth, the mastermind within the nuclear base, and the explosive light at the far end of the horizon… all of it vanished in an instant as the colossal flames descended and filled the entire world, leaving no trace behind.
When those flames receded like a tide, only the desolate ruins of cities remained standing above ground. As for the more distant Human Base, it was almost completely unscathed, with not a single trace of the explosion visible.
The terrifying flames imbued with the power of the Evil God even burned away nuclear radiation, leaving nothing behind.
Chu Donglin stood in the night sky and took a deep breath.
Then he exhaled.
At least, he had finally won. (To be continued)
