In the distance, a layer of mist shrouded the ground, obscuring whatever lay beneath it. No one knew what secrets were hidden within, much like the enigma that was Lin Lingsu in Wei Ning's eyes, veiled by countless layers of mystery that he could never hope to unravel.
Wei Ning remained silent for a moment before finally saying, "Let's go." The two of them walked deeper into the mist, one in front of the other. The fog thickened, dampening Lin Lingsu's clothes. Without a word, Wei Ning opened the Red Umbrella and sheltered Lin Lingsu beneath it. The space under the umbrella was small; Wei Ning barely managed to fit half of his body under it. Although Lin Lingsu was not as tall as Qiqi, she was only three inches shorter than Wei Ning. Standing together, they truly resembled a pair of perfect companions.
Yet who could know the feelings stirring within these two seemingly fated individuals at that moment?
The mist grew heavier, enveloping everything like a giant net. All that could be seen was a vast expanse of white in this bewildering place that felt almost ghostly. With every step they took, Wei Ning and Lin Lingsu were cautious, wary of the unpredictable events that might occur here, knowing they could not rely on logic to guide them.
As they cautiously surveyed their surroundings, they walked for what felt like an eternity until a gust of wind blew through, dispersing some of the fog ahead. Suddenly, Wei Ning pointed forward and exclaimed, "Look!"
It was then that they noticed an expansive lake stretching endlessly before them, with an ancient city rising majestically in the center. The city was partially shrouded in mist, making it hard to see clearly. Lin Lingsu nodded and said, "This must be the lair of the Three-Legged Crow."
Navigating through the fog, they finally discovered a path leading to the heart of the lake and arrived at the gates of the ancient city. The gates were dark and slightly ajar, revealing a narrow opening.
Finally finding their destination brought an unexpected surge of joy to Wei Ning's heart as he said, "Be careful."
Lin Lingsu trembled slightly but did not respond. As they entered the city, it became evident that this place was ancient; its layout was meticulously designed with shrines, market buildings, streets, and residences all carefully planned. In the center stood a vast square with a towering altar several meters high at its center, adorned with an engraving of a Three-Legged Crow. Yet there was no one around; the atmosphere was eerily silent, reminiscent of a ghost town.
The two moved cautiously toward the altar when they simultaneously noticed a woman in black standing in the middle of the square with her head bowed. Her long hair obscured her face. Wei Ning hurried over to her, and as she slowly lifted her head, he blurted out, "Qiqi..."
To his surprise, Qiqi's once black eyes had turned golden and locked onto him intently. Lin Lingsu gasped and shouted, "Don't look into her eyes!" as she thrust her Seven Star Sword directly at Qiqi.
With a clang, Wei Ning raised his Red Umbrella to block the Seven Star Sword. His expression twisted in shock as he stammered, "You really came to harm me..."
"She is not who she seems; she is..."
"What good is there in that?" Wei Ning interrupted. "Enchantress, I knew you had ill intentions. You think you would help me? What a joke." With that, he drew the Peach Wood Sword from the Red Umbrella and launched a series of attacks aimed directly at Lin Lingsu's vital points. Lin Lingsu dodged swiftly, evading several lethal strikes from Wei Ning before finally stopping to glare at him. "You actually intend to kill me?"
"That's right."
"Haha," Lin Lingsu laughed instead of getting angry. "Very well, today I, Lin Lingsu, will experience the prowess of Young Master Wei."
Wei Ning pulled out the Fire Spirit Pearl from his pocket and flicked it toward Lin Lingsu. She managed to evade it, but Wei Ning continued to unleash the Fire Spirit Pearls one after another. Lin Lingsu deflected each one, but when a Fire Spirit Pearl hit the ground, it ignited into a roaring flame. Caught off guard, Lin Lingsu felt her skirt catch fire. She quickly used her sword to cut away the burning fabric and spat angrily, "I knew it! How could you possibly forgive me? Yes, I did take one of your eyes; if you have the guts, come and take mine!" With that, she stepped onto her Yubu and prepared to strike.
Wei Ning raised his Red Umbrella, sword in one hand and umbrella in the other, waiting for Lin Lingsu's attack.
At that moment, Qiqi suddenly wrapped her arms around Wei Ning from behind, holding him tightly. "Wei Ning, don't leave me."
Just then, Lin Lingsu's Seven Star Sword was upon them. Wei Ning was struck with fear, but the sword pierced through Qiqi instead of him. In an instant, Qiqi transformed into a puff of blue smoke and vanished.
Lin Lingsu snorted coldly, ignoring the bewildered Wei Ning as she stepped aside with an icy expression that revealed nothing.
Realizing that Qiqi was merely an illusion conjured within this realm, Wei Ning understood he had misjudged Lin Lingsu. He found himself at a loss for words.
Suddenly, a point of yellow light appeared on the altar and grew larger until it transformed into countless yellow stars that illuminated the entire ancient city. A distant sound began to emerge—initially faint but gradually becoming clearer—until it resembled the thunderous stampede of countless beasts echoing in Wei Ning's ears. Lin Lingsu stared intently at the altar, murmuring, "It has appeared; it has appeared."
At that moment, a figure clad in animal skins emerged from nowhere, resembling those who had previously appeared in Wei Ning's illusions. Before long, more and more people gathered in the square. It was as if they were oblivious to both Wei Ning and Lin Lingsu; they crawled around the square, emitting low murmurs of supplication.
All of them trembled like lambs awaiting slaughter, their eyes cast downward in fear as they dared not look up at the sky.
In the center of the altar, a pillar suddenly emitted a blinding light, causing Wei Ning and Lin Lingsu to squint their eyes. After the brilliance faded, a pair of enormous Golden Wings appeared in the air, transforming into a gigantic Three-Legged Crow that let out a cry reminiscent of the Phoenix Song. As its form grew larger, it slowly descended and transformed into a middle-aged man radiating golden light.
The man walked directly towards Wei Ning, nodded with a smile, and said, "Good friend, we meet again."
