Long-term insomnia and immense mental pressure had driven Zhang Kai to the brink of madness, as if even the slightest argument could lead him to throw punches. Zhang Kai was large and fought quickly and fiercely, causing everyone in his class, even the entire school, to regard him as a plague. In contrast, Sun Bing appeared sickly and frail, enduring Zhang Kai's insults and provocations without retorting, leaving Zhang Kai at a loss. The report for changing dormitories had been stuck in approval limbo for too long, forcing Zhang Kai to squeeze into someone else's room and share a bed. Yet in his dreams, Sun Bing's emotionless eyes seemed to follow him relentlessly, haunting him.
At that moment, Zhang Kai felt like a spring compressed to its limit.
Finally, the school approved the dormitory transfer request, and Zhang Kai breathed a sigh of relief; he could finally get some proper sleep.
As Zhang Kai packed his belongings in the dormitory, Guo Xiaofei helped him while Sun Bing lay on the bed, seemingly lifeless.
After an afternoon of packing, it was mealtime. Guo Xiaofei ordered two takeout boxes—one for Zhang Kai and one for himself. They began eating in the dormitory while Zhang Kai got out of bed. He hadn’t spoken to Guo Xiaofei in a long time but called for his own takeout and sat at his desk to eat.
Suddenly, Zhang Kai put down his bowl and stood up.
He retrieved a watermelon knife from his neatly packed box and walked behind Sun Bing, raising the knife high.
Sun Bing's blood splattered onto the pristine takeout box and the white wall.
Zhang Kai picked up Sun Bing's head from the table, still with rice in his mouth.
Guo Xiaofei was frozen in shock.
There had been no warning signs leading up to this moment.
Zhang Kai glanced expressionlessly at Guo Xiaofei before stepping out with Sun Bing's head in hand.
Blood dripped from the dormitory onto the floor as Zhang Kai walked slowly down the corridor, one hand gripping the knife and the other holding Sun Bing's still-open-eyed head. As he passed each dorm room door, he politely knocked before swinging Sun Bing's head in front of whoever answered.
Zhang Kai continued walking, leaving a trail of blood behind him. The sounds of footsteps and screams echoed chaotically from behind, but it seemed he heard nothing; all that filled the air was the sound of his own steps.
He ascended to the third floor, then the fourth, and finally reached the rooftop.
Below, a crowd had gathered; nearly everyone in the school was aware of what had happened and had rushed downstairs to witness Zhang Kai on the roof, holding a severed head and covered in blood.
Soon, police cars arrived.
Zhang Kai's face was stiff, his eyes vacant as he held Sun Bing's head, as if it were nothing more than an inconsequential watermelon.
However, the police were fully armed, aiming at Zhang Kai. A sniper had already set up his rifle, ready to take him down at the slightest sign of resistance.
The Negotiation Expert trembled as he held a megaphone towards Zhang Kai. Yet, the once eloquent negotiators now appeared clumsy and hesitant. It was no surprise; they were used to mediating domestic disputes and now faced a "demon" wielding a knife in one hand and a severed head in the other.
At that moment, a familiar figure appeared below—Wei Ning. He had just returned and found himself caught up in this chaos.
Wei Ning frowned, his gaze fixed intently on Zhang Kai's every move.
The Negotiation Experts were puzzled; typically, such criminals were emotionally volatile, often threatening to jump off buildings as a bargaining tactic with the government. But Zhang Kai seemed oblivious to everything around him, staring blankly into the distance, silent.
It was as if none of this concerned him at all.
The Negotiation Experts were at a loss, and the police dared not act rashly. Both sides remained locked in this tense standoff.
Then a young man stepped forward and addressed the Negotiation Experts. "Uncle, let me talk to him. I'm his classmate."
The police glanced at Guo Xiaofei and agreed, but requested that Guo Xiaofei maintain a distance from Zhang Kai.
“Zhang Kai.” Guo Xiaofei called out Zhang Kai's name in a strange tone. Zhang Kai had been silent until he heard Guo Xiaofei's voice, as if he had just woken up suddenly.
Zhang Kai looked at the knife and the severed head in his hands, instantly terrified to the point of losing his mind. He hurriedly dropped Sun Bing's head and began frantically wiping his hands, shouting and screaming.
“What’s wrong with me? What’s happening?” Zhang Kai stared at the fully armed police and his blood-soaked hands, his mind clearly under intense strain. Seeing that Zhang Kai was reacting, the police began shouting at him continuously. At that moment, Zhang Kai was unable to process anything; he was clearly on the verge of a breakdown.
“Come over here, just come over here,” Guo Xiaofei said softly to Zhang Kai.
“Oh.” Zhang Kai obediently took a few steps forward, and the police breathed a sigh of relief. Several burly men quietly gathered their strength, preparing to rush in and tackle Zhang Kai from a safe distance.
Suddenly, Zhang Kai stopped and shouted, “I know! I killed someone; you’re here to arrest me. I’m not going over there! If I go over there, you’ll sentence me to death! I won’t go!” He waved the watermelon knife wildly in the air, looking deranged.
“I don’t want to go to jail! I don’t want to go to jail!”
“Just come over; we’ll take it slow,” the Negotiation Expert said, noticing Zhang Kai’s extreme instability and fearing he might slip and fall.
“Zhang Kai, come over here; let’s talk slowly,” Wei Ning finally stepped forward to persuade Zhang Kai.
Seeing Wei Ning felt like finding a lifeline for Zhang Kai. He cried out, “I didn’t kill Sun Bing! I didn’t kill him! I didn’t kill Sun Bing!”
Wei Ning calmly nodded and said, “Just come over; we can discuss this later, okay?”
“Okay.” Zhang Kai lowered his hands, preparing to surrender as several police officers cautiously approached him.
“Sun Bing,” Guo Xiaofei suddenly spoke in a peculiar tone, “Sun Bing is not the one you killed, not the one you killed.”
When Guo Xiaofei uttered the name Sun Bing, the sound was so strange that Wei Ning couldn't help but furrow his brow.
Suddenly, Zhang Kai became inexplicably agitated, shouting loudly, “Sun Bing! Sun Bing! You are Sun Bing! You've come to claim a life! Don’t come near, don’t come near…”
Zhang Kai was covered in blood, looking like a wild spirit.
“Don’t come closer, don’t come closer.” Zhang Kai swung wildly at the air, jumping around and ignoring everyone’s pleas.
“Be careful!” Wei Ning shouted, but Zhang Kai lost his footing and fell off the rooftop.
“Zhang Kai…” Wei Ning and the others rushed forward, but Zhang Kai had already plummeted down.
Wei Ning closed his eyes, unable to bear to watch.
Zhang Kai hit the ground with a sickening thud, his body mangled and bloody.
A scream pierced through the night sky.
