Chapter Seventeen: The Waterfall Training
"Reporting to the Elder, Lin Feng is missing."
The next morning, the disciple responsible for counting heads replied.
Lin Yun remained unfazed upon hearing this. "He has some self-awareness; staying here would be useless. Let him go."
"But, Lin Miaomiao is also missing. It seems she left with him," the disciple said timidly.
"What?"
Lin Yun's expression changed dramatically as he immediately looked around. Indeed, there was no sign of Lin Miaomiao. She was a crucial asset in his hands. Angrily, he shouted, "That scoundrel... why isn't anyone searching? Everyone, go down the mountain and find them! We must bring Lin Miaomiao back. And that useless Lin Feng must be brought back as well!"
Another disciple approached Lin Yun and handed him a piece of paper. "Elder, this was found on Lin Feng's bed; it seems to be a message."
"Let me see." Lin Yun took the white paper with a frown. It indeed had a line written on it: Elder Lin, I will be away for a few days but will return before the Inner Disciple Competition. Do not worry.
"Damn it," Lin Yun cursed without regard for decorum; just hearing Lin Feng's name made him grit his teeth in anger.
Solitary Mountain was vast and sprawling, making it difficult to find a single person.
Meanwhile, Lin Feng and Lin Miaomiao were weaving through the mountains, searching for a suitable place to cultivate their bodies. After half a day, they arrived at the foot of a waterfall.
The waterfall soared a thousand feet high, cascading down and creating waves that surged several meters high.
Lin Feng looked at the waterfall with a look of surprise. He took a deep breath and rushed under the waterfall, allowing the force of the water to crash against his body.
The Thousand-Foot Waterfall was incredibly powerful. The moment he made contact, Lin Feng let out a muffled groan as he was struck so hard that he could barely breathe. He gritted his teeth and persevered.
Soon, he felt a wave of pain wash over him, his entire body turning red from the impact of the waterfall. In some areas, the force broke his skin, and as blood began to flow, it was quickly washed away by the torrent.
After half a day, Lin Feng gradually adapted to the impact of the waterfall. Only then did he take out the Ancient Cauldron from his storage bag. When the Ancient Cauldron hit the ground, it emitted a resonating sound. Lin Feng gritted his teeth and wrapped his arms around the Ancient Cauldron, trying to lift it.
At this moment, Lin Feng's cultivation was on the verge of breaking through to the first level of Foundation. After undergoing a Medicinal Bath, his Physical Strength had increased significantly. Even with the waterfall's impact, he still managed to slowly lift the Ancient Cauldron with great difficulty.
"Two..."
As Lin Feng counted while lifting the cauldron, each time he raised it, he had to exert all his strength due to the waterfall crashing against both his body and the Ancient Cauldron. Each lift was shaky and laborious.
Lin Miaomiao watched Lin Feng and found his training method not only strange but somewhat foolish. She asked, "Isn't cultivation meant to enhance your Foundation? What are you trying to achieve by lifting the cauldron like this?"
"To increase my Physical Strength," Lin Feng replied as he took another deep breath and lifted the Ancient Cauldron for the sixth time, his face turning crimson from exertion.
Lin Miaomiao added, "Elder Lin, we only need to enhance our Foundation; no one trains their physical body like this."
"How would a frog at the bottom of a well understand the Great Dao?" Lin Feng said as he completed lifting the Ancient Cauldron for the eighth time.
This time, Lin Feng managed to lift it a total of fifteen times. After that, he was completely exhausted and utterly drained. He stored away the Ancient Cauldron but did not rest immediately; instead, he began to circulate his energy for recovery.
In a state of extreme weakness, along with proper circulation of his techniques, when Vital Energy entered his body, it did not immediately transform into cultivation power but rather nourished and strengthened his physical body. This is why cultivators often experience significant increases in Physical Strength after recovering from severe injuries to their bodies.
You can also rely on your own cultivation to nourish your body, but the recovery speed is too slow that way. Generally, when a cultivator experiences life-and-death battles and cannot move, they rely on their own cultivation to recover.
Lin Miaomiao quietly watched Lin Feng and, after he woke up, asked, "I've been wanting to ask you a question."
"Go ahead."
As soon as Lin Feng finished that word, he returned to the waterfall. Time was precious to him. He needed to grow stronger, and he needed to do it quickly. His goal was not some Inner Sect Disciples Competition but the Jiuzhou Gathering Conference mentioned by the Gray Robed Man.
A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step; for now, he had to start with the basics and practice the orthodox methods.
"Is cultivation really that difficult?" Lin Miaomiao asked.
"What do you mean by that?"
"We've been in Solitary Moon City for a month, and everyone has been practicing like crazy. The one who made the fastest progress is Lin Heng; he broke through a level in just one month. The others are still stuck at their foundation. And you chose this strange way of tormenting yourself, yet after all this time, your foundation remains unchanged."
"Does cultivation really seem that difficult? I feel like if I want to break through, I could easily surpass a level in no time," Lin Miaomiao said with a puzzled expression.
"Pfft..."
When Lin Feng heard her last statement, he let out a breath. He didn't even lift the Ancient Cauldron and was struck hard by the waterfall, making his body feel heavy and nearly coughing up blood.
"You think you can break through a level so easily?" Lin Feng repeated Lin Miaomiao's words.
"Yes! Don't you believe me?"
Lin Miaomiao began her cultivation, the Earth Qi surging into her body. Her Dantian absorbed the purest and most powerful Vital Energy at a terrifying speed. In just the time it took to burn a stick of incense, she was on the verge of breaking through to the fifth level of Foundation.
Lin Feng looked on in shock. Even with the Stone Pearl, he couldn't achieve such a terrifying speed. As he observed more closely, he began to notice something unusual.
Like any ordinary Cultivator, Lin Feng absorbed Earth Qi through his pores. As one's cultivation reached a certain height, the demand for Vital Energy increased, causing all the pores to open wide and inhale large amounts of Earth Qi. When a Cultivator reached the Foundation of a strong practitioner, they could merge with Earth Qi, as if soaking in Vital Energy.
Lin Feng witnessed that the Vital Energy flowed directly from Lin Miaomiao's body into her own, not entering through her seven orifices or pores, but rather flowing like water directly into her body.
Lin Miaomiao stopped her cultivation and said, "Did you see that? If I cultivate for just a little longer, I can break through to the sixth level. But I don't want to cultivate. I've never liked it, yet my father always forces me to. If it weren't for the fact that cultivating allows me to enter Solitary Moon City and escape my father's watchful eye, I wouldn't bother with it at all."
"So you're saying that during your month in Solitary Moon City, while everyone else is working hard on their cultivation, you've just been slacking off?" Lin Feng asked.
"What does 'slacking off' mean?"
"It means just going through the motions."
Lin Miaomiao nodded. "Exactly. If I seriously cultivated for a month, I'd probably have broken through to the Ninth Layer of Foundation Realm long ago. To be honest with you, since I was born, I've spent less than half a month seriously cultivating."
"Ah."
Lin Feng sighed deeply, suddenly feeling an urge to spit blood. He couldn't help but exclaim, "What kind of monster are you?"
"What do you mean by that? Are you trying to provoke me?" Lin Miaomiao retorted angrily.
Lin Feng shook his head repeatedly. "If I hadn't seen it with my own eyes, I wouldn't believe there could be someone like you. Do you realize that one breath of yours is worth an hour of my cultivation? How can we even compare?"
"It’s unfair, so unfair. Someone like you is just a spoiled darling, isn’t she? Why did I have to encounter such an incredibly arrogant girl? Isn’t this just a blow to my confidence? How am I supposed to cultivate now?" Lin Feng felt waves of helplessness rising within him.
No matter how hard he tried, how could he ever catch up to Lin Miaomiao?
"Am I really that amazing? I just feel a bit different from everyone else, but is there really such a huge difference?" Lin Miaomiao asked innocently.
"A bit different? Are you mocking me or what? Talking to you makes me want to spit blood."
Lin Feng sighed repeatedly, feeling utterly deflated. Suddenly, he lost all motivation to cultivate.
Seeing Lin Feng in such low spirits, Lin Miaomiao took out a Foundation Pill and said, "Since we’re different, why don’t you take this Foundation Pill? That way, you can quickly break through to the first level and won’t have to suffer under the waterfall anymore."
"Is this really bathing for me? I’m working so hard to cultivate my body while you’re just bathing?" Lin Feng said with frustration. Finally, he took a deep breath and said, "Forget it. I can’t take things too seriously with a spoiled girl; otherwise, I’ll end up getting angry for no reason. I’ll just focus on my own cultivation and walk my own path."
"Have you finally come to your senses? That’s more like it. There are shortcuts in cultivation; just take it," Lin Miaomiao said happily.
Lin Feng forced a smile and replied, "Thank you, but I meant to say I’ll continue bathing… No, I mean continue cultivating my body…"
Lin Feng realized that this time he was genuinely affected; his words were all jumbled.
Seven days later, feeling that the impact of the waterfall was minimal, Lin Feng began to carry the Ancient Cauldron upstream against the current, struggling to climb upward through the rushing water.
Suddenly, a large rock came tumbling down. Lin Feng’s view was obstructed by the waterfall, and he was caught off guard. The rock struck his shoulder, leaving it red and swollen with some cracks.
With a muffled groan, Lin Feng gritted his teeth to steady himself, managing not to fall.
"Come on."
Lin Feng let out a fierce shout as he continued to climb, determined to reach the top of the waterfall. The water had smoothed the rocks to an unusual slickness, and Lin Feng lost his grip, tumbling down from the waterfall and crashing onto the riverbed, sending up a spray of water dozens of feet high.
"Not enough."
Lin Feng set off again, climbing once more, only to fall multiple times along the way. He remained silent, enduring the pain as large stones struck him repeatedly.
"Lin Feng, are you crazy? There’s no such training method. I don’t want to play anymore; let’s go back." Lin Miaomiao began to worry about Lin Feng. At this rate, she feared he would eventually fall to his death.
"You can go back if you're tired of playing. I will keep training until the competition starts," Lin Feng replied amidst the rushing water, his figure nearly obscured by the cascade.
This time, Lin Feng managed to climb to the middle of the waterfall, where he could see the top.
"Finally getting close," Lin Feng said with a hint of joy.
At that moment, a massive boulder broke loose from the top of the waterfall. Weighing at least a thousand pounds, it plummeted from such a height with an incredible force capable of crushing an ordinary person.
"Lin Feng, get out of the way! A boulder is falling!" Lin Miaomiao exclaimed in panic as she watched the rock descend.
Lin Feng looked up and sensed the boulder’s presence as it hurtled toward him at breakneck speed. Before it reached him, a heavy pressure enveloped him, causing his breath to quicken.
"Come on then, let these boulders help me prove my worth and push my body to its limits."
A fierce expression crossed Lin Feng's face as he gripped the rocks tightly, slightly lowering his head and arching his back in preparation for the impending impact.
"What do you want to do? You crazy person..."
Lin Miaomiao realized Lin Feng's intentions, and her heart was filled with worry. She wanted to help, but she was unable to fly and could only watch helplessly, feeling anxious.
As the giant rock was about to hit Lin Feng, Lin Miaomiao couldn't bear to look. She turned away and said, "If you want to die, then go ahead."
Her voice trembled slightly, and tears began to fall.
