Chapter Eighteen: Vital Energy - The Jungle
Bang...
With a muffled thud, a massive stone struck Lin Feng's back. As a crack echoed, Lin Feng felt the unmistakable sensation of his bones breaking, a searing pain radiating through his back, indicating that his skin was likely torn.
Lin Feng felt darkness closing in around him, nearly losing his grip as he teetered on the edge of the rocky precipice. Gritting his teeth, he fought to hold on, but could not suppress a violent cough that expelled a mouthful of blood.
The giant stone shattered upon hitting Lin Feng's back, breaking into two pieces before plummeting from the waterfall with a pair of splashes as it hit the river below.
"Lin Feng..."
Lin Miaomiao called out anxiously, turning around. Hearing the two sounds of impact, she feared that one was the rock and the other was Lin Feng falling. Being struck by such a massive stone would surely knock him unconscious, and falling from such a height would leave him with no chance of survival.
She glanced into the river but saw no sign of Lin Feng. Then she looked up at the top of the waterfall and found Lin Feng still standing in place. She let out a sigh of relief, saying, "You really have a strong life force if you survived that."
Lin Feng attempted to breathe deeply to shake off the dizziness. Finally, he replied, "If I died, who would keep you company?"
"Still being cheeky? Hurry up and come down," Lin Miaomiao urged with concern.
"I have to reach the top."
Lin Feng struggled painfully but ultimately exhausted himself and fell once more from the waterfall. Quick as lightning, Lin Miaomiao caught him as he fainted.
Looking down at Lin Feng in her arms, Lin Miaomiao felt her hands and arms growing numb. She couldn't help but exclaim, "I just caught you and my arms are already tingling. How incredible must be the force behind that thousand-pound stone? Is it really worth it for you to risk your life training like this?"
Lin Miaomiao quietly watched Lin Feng, this was the first time she had observed him so closely. She had never seen someone so dedicated to a cause.
As she held Lin Feng's right hand, she felt something warm dripping down. Looking down, she saw it was blood. Startled, Lin Miaomiao immediately lifted Lin Feng out of the water. When she saw his back, her face turned pale.
Lin Feng's back was torn open, flesh and blood mingling, exposing bone. Despite such a severe injury, he still persisted in climbing.
Lin Miaomiao carried Lin Feng away from the waterfall, hoping that he would stop risking his life for his training.
Lin Miaomiao had an extraordinary understanding of spiritual herbs. She walked for three days with the weakened Lin Feng, gathering herbs along the way to heal his wounds. After three days, they arrived at a primeval forest where the Vital Energy was rich and spiritual herbs were abundant.
Overjoyed, Lin Miaomiao placed Lin Feng on a large rock and began to gather some potent spiritual herbs. Holding these herbs in her hands, she raised them above Lin Feng's mouth.
She continuously twisted her hands, crushing the herbs until drops of spiritual liquid fell into Lin Feng's mouth. These drops were hard-earned; it took several plants to yield less than six drops. Lin Miaomiao repeated this process for an entire day, not knowing how many precious spiritual herbs she had crushed, her arms aching terribly. Finally, color returned to Lin Feng's face, and the wounds on his back began to heal slowly.
"The spiritual herbs I chose really are effective," Lin Miaomiao thought happily as she watched Lin Feng gradually recover.
In the middle of the night, Lin Feng finally opened his eyes. He looked around at the trees and asked, "Where is this?"
"I don't know either," Lin Miaomiao replied. "But it's nice here; the Vital Energy is rich and there are many spiritual herbs. These herbs are even more precious than those we found in the Azure Wind Mountain Range."
"Oh," Lin Feng said as he sat up, feeling less pain in his body. He crossed his legs and began to absorb the Vital Energy to restore himself. After a day, Lin Feng's body was completely healed; he felt that his strength had increased significantly, and his Physical Strength had also improved.
Lin Feng took out the Ancient Cauldron and found he could easily lift it with both hands. He then lifted it with one hand, recalling what the Gray Robed Man had said: lifting it one-handed a thousand times would allow him to break through to the next Foundation level.
"One... two... twenty-three... eighty-nine... three hundred twenty-one... five hundred sixty-two..."
Lin Feng counted as he lifted the Ancient Cauldron. At first, it felt easy, but by the time he reached three hundred lifts, he began to feel soreness. When he hit five hundred, his arms felt stiff; at seven hundred, the weight of the cauldron became unbearable. By eight hundred, he was nearing exhaustion, each lift requiring him to grit his teeth and push through. At nine hundred, every lift made his hands and feet tremble.
Lin Miaomiao had long since grown accustomed to Lin Feng's strange training methods. Lifting the Ancient Cauldron was far better than risking his life under a waterfall.
"Nine hundred ninety-one..."
Lin Feng could barely muster the strength to count, his voice weak and hoarse.
"Nine hundred ninety-five..."
His counting sounded like a mosquito's buzz, barely audible.
"Nine hundred ninety-seven..."
At this point, Lin Feng felt that each lift was not powered by strength but rather by the shifting of his bones. The bones were in direct contact with one another, and every joint felt as if it were being pierced by needles.
"Nine hundred ninety-nine..."
Lin Feng's eyes reddened as victory loomed just ahead.
"One thousand."
Finally, Lin Feng achieved it for the first time. The Ancient Cauldron thudded to the ground, and Lin Feng collapsed beside it. He felt as if he had no strength left even to breathe.
At that moment, Lin Miaomiao appeared, holding spirit herbs and crushing them to extract drops of spirit liquid just as she had done before.
"Open your mouth," Lin Miaomiao urged.
"What is this?" Lin Feng asked as he opened his mouth.
"This is the essence of spiritual herbs," Lin Miaomiao replied.
As the essence dripped into his mouth and slid down his throat, it felt like a long-awaited rain after a drought. Lin Feng experienced an indescribable comfort in his body. Each drop of the essence was like a sip of rich old wine, making him feel slightly intoxicated.
"How does it taste? Not bad, right? This is how I woke you up," Lin Miaomiao said with a grin.
"Thank you," Lin Feng said sincerely.
Having finally qualified for a breakthrough, Lin Feng couldn't wait to sit down and begin his meditation. The surrounding Vital Energy continuously flowed into him through his seven orifices, which he refined into pure and powerful Vital Energy that entered his Dantian, transforming into his cultivation. This cultivation accumulated over time, eventually turning into liquid. Although this drop of liquid was not as large as a raindrop, it contained immense power.
Three hours later, Lin Feng suddenly opened his eyes and declared, "I have finally broken through."
As Lin Feng achieved his breakthrough, Lin Miaomiao stood by to protect him from any disturbances. She observed closely and asked, "You could have broken through long ago; why did you hold back until now?"
"My master said I could only break through when I possessed a physical strength of ten thousand pounds with one hand," Lin Feng replied.
"Who is your master? I've never heard you mention him," Lin Miaomiao inquired.
"My master," Lin Feng recalled the Gray Robed Man with admiration and gratitude on his face. "He is a reclusive expert, like a Divine Dragon that appears but never reveals its tail; no one knows his name."
"I think he's just a madman; otherwise, he wouldn't teach you such a cruel method of cultivation," Lin Miaomiao said with dissatisfaction.
Lin Feng found this method of cultivation to be much more reliable and effective compared to his previous experiences of crashing into mountains.
"Next, I need to work hard for the next Foundation. It seems I need to take another Medicinal Bath," Lin Feng said, directing his gaze deep into the forest.
"Lin Feng, let's head back. The day of the competition is approaching," Lin Miaomiao urged.
"There are still twenty-three days left. Maybe that's enough for me to break through to the second level," Lin Feng pondered.
"You’re not planning to go train by the waterfall again, are you? I must tell you, I didn’t remember the way when I brought you here, so I have no idea where the waterfall is," Lin Miaomiao tried to dissuade him.
Lin Feng shook his head. "This forest is far more complex than our Azure Wind Mountain Range. I don’t know how you found this place. With such dense Vital Energy and abundant spiritual herbs, there must be fierce beasts lurking within. There’s no better way to strengthen my body than by battling fierce beasts."
Without waiting for Lin Miaomiao's response, Lin Feng dashed into the forest like a night wolf, his agile form quickly disappearing among the trees.
"Hey, where are you going?" Lin Miaomiao shouted at the spot where Lin Feng had vanished.
"I'm going deeper into the forest to find fierce beasts," Lin Feng called back, his voice growing fainter.
"What about me? Are you just going to leave me behind? What would your father think?" Lin Miaomiao exclaimed angrily.
"You’re a pampered girl; if you don’t cultivate, it would be a waste of your talents. This place is filled with fierce beasts, unlike humans who are full of deceit. They will only force you to awaken your survival instincts and become stronger."
"Miaomiao, I'll be waiting for you deep in the forest. Since you possess such terrifying gifts, let them awaken completely."
Lin Feng's voice faded further until it was almost inaudible.
"Hey, you can't just leave me like this... Hey... can you hear me... Lin Feng... come back... you jerk Lin Feng... come back..."
Lin Miaomiao called out loudly, but there was no response for a long time. Although her cultivation far surpassed Lin Feng's, she couldn't help but feel afraid at the mention of fierce beasts.
Lin Miaomiao cautiously made her way into the forest when suddenly, the bushes ahead rustled, and a dark figure darted out. Lin Miaomiao focused her eyes and saw it was a large, damp rat.
Women are often more afraid of rats than elephants, and Lin Miaomiao was no exception. She hurriedly stepped back in fright, unable to stop herself from screaming. It wasn't until the rat had disappeared for quite some time that Lin Miaomiao finally calmed down.
Wiping away the tiny tears that had escaped from her fright, she couldn't help but curse, "You bad Lin Feng, damn you Lin Feng, you jerk Lin Feng, I will definitely not let you off the hook."
