Chapter Twenty-Eight: A Series of Twists and Turns
"Your physical body can still hold up until now? Even a First Rank beast, after being wounded by my Vitality Sword Flower, would be in tatters by this point. What is your body made of?"
Shen Yumen displayed a look of astonishment, even a bit of shock. He had never seen, nor even heard of, a person's body being strong enough to rival that of a ferocious beast. As he exerted his Second-Grade Magical Artifact with great force, he felt his Vital Energy depleting too quickly; he wouldn't be able to maintain this for long.
Unbeknownst to him, Lin Feng's physical cultivation was a fusion of internal and external practices. If it were merely about strengthening the external body like waterfall training, then even if his body could withstand the Sword Flower, his Internal Organs and Eight Extraordinary Meridians would still suffer damage and collapse.
This was due to the consumption of ferocious beast blood and flesh to absorb its spiritual power, combined with the benefits of the Medicinal Bath, which allowed for an ultimate fusion of internal and external strength. This made Lin Feng's body uniformly powerful from the inside out. Even the most vulnerable parts of the human body—Internal Organs, Eight Extraordinary Meridians, bones—had reached a level of strength that was hard for others to match.
What Lin Feng did not know was that two catalysts in the Medicinal Bath played a decisive role. One was naturally the Stone Pearl, and the other was the Ancient Cauldron.
"Though the Second-Grade Magical Artifact is formidable, how long can your cultivation sustain it?"
Lin Feng glanced at his own body, covered in wounds that were shocking to behold. This had been a brutal battle. If this were a fight to the death, Lin Feng believed he would emerge victorious.
However, this was merely a contest, and the person before him had not stirred any murderous intent within him.
At present, he was truly at a disadvantage. Facing a stronger opponent while unable to use lethal means made this battle quite difficult.
Lin Feng took out an object about a foot long, pointed at one end and rounded throughout—like a horn.
This object was the horn of an Azure Wind Rhinoceros obtained from the Beastly Forest. Lin Feng had witnessed its sharpness firsthand; it had pierced through even the body of a Golden Crocodile.
Lin Feng began his counterattack, moving as swiftly as a wolf on the prowl across the Training Ground. He struck at the Sword Flower with the Azure Wind Horn. Unlike a dagger that would shatter easily, the Azure Wind Horn held firm for a moment before breaking through the Sword Flower.
Finally, there was something capable of shattering the Sword Flower; Lin Feng saw a glimmer of victory. He charged forward fiercely and sharply. Despite being heavily wounded by the Sword Flower, with injuries deepening and blood flowing more freely, he remained silent.
This pain was nothing compared to what he had endured in the Medicinal Bath or during waterfall training or against the Spiritual Power Torment from ferocious beast blood and flesh.
Soon, Lin Feng arrived in front of Shen Yumen, swinging the Azure Wind Horn towards Shen Yumen's chest. Shen Yumen immediately swung his sword to block, and with a sharp metallic clash, sparks flew as the Azure Wind Horn and the Sharp Sword collided, yet both remained intact.
"What is that thing in your hand? How can it not break?" Shen Yumen exclaimed in surprise. It was known that a Second-Grade Magical Artifact was already the highest grade of treasure for a Cultivator family from a remote area. Such artifacts were extremely rare among any family. Could it be that what Lin Feng held was also a Second-Grade Magical Artifact?
"The horn of a Second-Stage Beast," Lin Feng replied without hesitation, continuing his movements without pause.
Clang, clang, clang...
The two engaged in rapid attacks, the sounds of metal clashing growing faster and more urgent. Lin Feng was inferior to Shen Yumen in terms of cultivation and slightly weaker in terms of magical artifacts. Each time their weapons collided, he felt a strong backlash that caused damage to his internal organs.
The reason Lin Feng could hold on until now was not only due to his powerful physique but also his extraordinary willpower and endurance.
The clash between their figures intensified, the fierce battle dazzling to behold. The pressure Lin Feng faced far exceeded that of Shen Yumen; however, Shen Yumen's calmness and patience were worlds apart from Lin Feng's.
It should be noted that Lin Feng had trained his body by repeatedly crashing into mountains without guidance and then soaking himself in seawater. The willpower and resilience required for this could only be truly understood by those who had experienced it. Moreover, Lin Feng did not just try once or twice; he persevered all the way through.
Shen Yumen's cultivation was rapidly depleting, and using the Second-Grade Magical Artifact was becoming increasingly difficult for him. The excessive consumption left him unable to adapt, causing his mental state to decline.
Lin Feng never wasted the best moments to attack.
With a fierce look in his eyes, Lin Feng swung the Azure Wind Horn sharply at Shen Yumen. Seizing the moment when Shen Yumen seemed dazed, he blocked the Sharp Sword with the Azure Wind Horn and delivered a powerful punch to Shen Yumen's chest with his left hand.
"Good!" Lin Yun couldn't help but stand up and clap, finally seeing hope for victory again.
“What are you doing, Shen Yumen? Hurry up and deal with him!” Fei Ze exclaimed, unable to contain his anger.
With a successful strike, Lin Feng took the lead. Close combat was his forte. He unleashed a flurry of attacks like a raging storm, leaving Shen Yumen gasping for breath, visibly distressed and under pressure.
“How many tricks does Lin Feng have?”
“He always manages to turn danger into opportunity and ultimately counterattack. Lin Feng is no ordinary person.”
The Outer Disciples were astonished, filled with admiration.
Thud, thud, thud…
Each punch landed on Shen Yumen's chest, causing him to spit out blood once more. Finally, Lin Feng executed a flying kick that sent Shen Yumen crashing to the ground.
Shen Yumen skidded across the arena until he reached the boundary line, nearly being kicked out and losing the match.
Pfft…
Shen Yumen continued to cough up blood, feeling dizzy and weak. He struggled to rise, his strength nearly depleted.
Meanwhile, Lin Feng could no longer suppress the internal injuries he had sustained and also spat out a mouthful of blood, his body swaying unsteadily. Yet, relying on his strong willpower, he gritted his teeth and held on.
“Good.”
The intense battle drew applause from the watching disciples. They looked at Lin Feng in disbelief as a second-level Cultivator defeated a sixth-level Cultivator. The admiration in their eyes deepened as they thought about it.
The thunderous applause was primarily directed at Lin Feng.
"Get up!" Fei Ze shouted loudly at Shen Yumen, who was lying on the ground.
"Lin Feng, well done." Lin Yun smiled with satisfaction, feeling an overwhelming joy that was almost surprising. If he could dance, he would have been tempted to break into a joyful jig.
"Finally, it's over," an Inner Sect Disciple spoke up.
Seeing that Shen Yumen still hadn't risen, the Head Elder stepped onto the Arena and announced loudly, "The result of this match is Lin Feng's victory."
"Good."
The Outer Disciples below applauded once more, their claps echoing like thunder.
"Not... yet... over..."
As a faint voice emerged, Shen Yumen struggled to stand up. His hair was disheveled, and a manic smile spread across his face. He looked at Lin Feng and said, "Lin Feng, you are indeed strong. Beyond my expectations. But do you think you've truly defeated me?"
After saying this, Shen Yumen took out a pill and swallowed it without hesitation.
"That's a higher-grade Foundation Pill; it can instantly enhance one's Foundation by one level," someone in the crowd recognized it.
A Foundation Pill can only be consumed once in a cultivator's lifetime while in the Foundation Realm.
As the pill entered his body and transformed into power that flowed into his Dantian, a hint of pain appeared on Shen Yumen's face. "You've forced me to use my last resort; you're quite impressive. This pill was originally meant for my duel with Lin Miaomiao."
"Come on!" Shen Yumen roared angrily as his cultivation slowly rose, a powerful aura gradually radiating from him.
At the seventh level, how would he fight?
"Ah, how can I continue fighting?"
"Just give up; you've already proven yourself to be strong."
The Outer Disciples urged him, in their hearts, Lin Feng was already a hero.
"Lin Feng, do you want to keep going?" Miaomiao couldn't help but ask. She understood Lin Feng well and knew that reaching the sixth level was his limit.
Lin Feng looked at Miaomiao but did not respond. Instead, he turned his gaze back to Shen Yumen on the stage, deep in thought.
How to break the deadlock? It was a difficult problem, a very challenging one.
"This is too nerve-wracking; why is there another twist?" Lin Yun thought they were on the verge of victory, only to find themselves back in despair. His old heart couldn't take it anymore.
"Forget it, I won't watch anymore; I really can't bear it. Just tell me the result later," Lin Yun said, feeling his emotions rise and fall with the fight, leaving him both amused and exasperated. After finishing his words, he walked away, glancing back at the Arena multiple times.
How to break the deadlock? Lin Feng kept asking himself.
Shen Yumen did not strike immediately; first, he needed to fully absorb the effects of the Foundation Pill. Secondly, with his seventh-level Foundation and previous battles behind him, Shen Yumen felt certain of victory.
Lin Feng looked at his own body, battered and bruised. His cultivation was nearly depleted. His internal organs had suffered damage. Even facing Shen Yumen at the sixth level, he could no longer fight. Moreover, Shen Yumen had advanced to a higher Foundation level.
Miaomiao approached the Arena and took out a pill. "Lin Feng, take this."
Lin Feng looked at the Foundation Pill in Miaomiao's hand. At that moment, he knew he couldn't afford to be without strength. However, he ultimately refused. After careful consideration, he decided that he would rather concede than consume the Foundation Pill and forcefully elevate his Foundation. Doing so would render all his previous suffering meaningless and jeopardize his future cultivation path.
This battle made him fully realize that the cultivation method of the Gray Robed Man was the true path of a strong person. Although it was difficult, arduous, and slow, it was the right way forward.
"But it's worth it!"
"Are you ready to admit defeat?" Shen Yumen asked. Lin Feng had already become a respected opponent in his eyes. During their previous battle, he had felt a genuine threat. He realized that if Lin Feng had targeted his joints instead of his chest while he was distracted, he would not only have lost but also been left crippled.
"Could you give me a moment to think of a way out?" Lin Feng countered.
Shen Yumen smiled and replied, "Of course."
"Thank you."
This battle had fostered a mutual respect between them. They both felt that the other was a person of character, worthy of deep friendship.
How to break the deadlock? Lin Feng asked himself again. It seemed there really was no way out; he had reached a dead end.
(How to break the deadlock? Feel free to guess; there are hints in the earlier text.)
