Chapter Forty-Five: Suicide Squad
The team gathered, and Captain Lindor led Lin Feng and the others swiftly to Liu Family Courtyard. By the time Lin Feng and the others arrived, many Soldiers were already standing there.
With a command from the leader, all Soldiers immediately parted, surrounding Liu Family Courtyard tightly.
Lin Feng approached Lindor and asked, "General Qian, what happened?"
Lindor shook his head and replied, "I'm not sure either, but judging by the situation, something significant is going on today."
Just then, a loud voice called out, "The General has arrived."
All the Soldiers turned to look as a woman slowly walked forward amidst the crowd. Dressed in military attire, her expression was calm, and under the moonlight of the night, she appeared even more imposing.
Upon seeing her arrival, the Soldiers immediately knelt and said, "We pay our respects to the General."
General Tang Jiner nodded slightly and said, "Get up. Is it confirmed that the Cultist is inside?"
Deputy Kuang Yun stepped forward and respectfully reported, "Report, General. My informant saw that person enter Liu Family Courtyard, and so far, they have not come out."
"Good work. This matter still needs confirmation. I will wait for your news outside," Tang Jiner said calmly.
"Yes, ma'am."
Encouraged by her words, Kuang Yun felt motivated; if today's mission succeeded, it would be largely due to his efforts. He stepped in front of the Soldiers and shouted, "Suicide Squad, prepare!"
Soon, twenty Soldiers assembled neatly and stood tall before Kuang Yun.
"Very good, morale is high," Kuang Yun praised them with a nod before adding, "but we are missing a leader."
Kuang Yun looked at the crowd, just as he was about to search for the leader, a subordinate leaned in and whispered a few words. Whatever was said made Kuang Yun show a look of approval.
Turning to Soldier, Kuang Yun said, "I heard that Solitary Moon City has sent a trial disciple today. I wonder if they have arrived?"
Just as Lin Feng was about to step forward, Lindor reached out to stop him. He whispered, "Remember, Kuang Yun is from the Fire Departure Sect, always suppressing us from Solitary Moon City. Don't say anything."
After speaking, Lindor clasped his fists and said, "Captain, the trial disciple just arrived today and is not yet familiar with everything in the military camp. It would be inappropriate for him to lead the Suicide Squad today."
Kuang Yun turned his gaze to Lindor, his eyes cold. "Lindor, today the General is present; it's a great opportunity to make achievements. Others are eager to take on this leadership role, yet I refuse. I’m giving this chance to you from Solitary Moon City. Do you mean to say that you lack even the confidence to gather intelligence?"
"Captain, why not let me take this opportunity instead?" Since he couldn't change Kuang Yun's decision, Lindor thought of stepping in for Lin Feng.
"What do you think you are? On the battlefield, one must obey orders. If you keep babbling and ruin the General's mood, even ten of your heads wouldn't be enough." Kuang Yun snorted coldly.
Not wanting to put Lindor in a difficult position, Lin Feng stepped forward and said, "I am the trial disciple who came today."
Upon glancing at Lin Feng, Kuang Yun immediately recognized his level of cultivation and showed disdain. "It won't be long before Solitary Moon City becomes a second-rate sect."
"The future of Solitary Moon City is not something you need to worry about. Besides, no matter how poorly we fare in the future, we will always be better than the Fire Departure Sect," Lin Feng retorted.
"You think you're quite arrogant, don't you?"
After whispering a few instructions to one of the Suicide Squad Soldiers, though Lin Feng couldn't hear them, he could guess what was intended. Then, pointing at the person in front of him, Kuang Yun declared, "Since he just arrived and doesn't understand the rules of the Suicide Squad, this mission is extremely important. Therefore, everyone will follow Xiang Hu as the leader, while that person will be the second-in-command. All commands will be based on the first leader."
This was clearly aimed at Lin Feng, but he showed no fear. The members of the Suicide Squad, all at the Foundation level and in the Nurturing Origin Realm, had different levels of strength; however, Lin Feng was confident in his ability to protect himself.
As the attack was about to commence, Kuang Yun stated, "Once you enter later, the servants of the Liu Family will come out to obstruct you. They are colluding with demons and deserve no mercy; anyone who obstructs us will be killed without exception."
"Whoever finds the Portrait Subject will receive credit."
Kuang Yun held up a portrait depicting a Stunning Man, his features exquisitely cold and beautiful to the point of being enchanting.
"As long as we find the Portrait Subject, the reward is ten thousand taels of silver. Those who assist will receive seven thousand taels."
"Understood!" The members of the Suicide Squad shouted in unison, their voices filled with surprise and anticipation. Missions like today’s, which offered both credit and a monetary reward, were rare.
"The reward is generous, but military discipline is even stricter. Everyone knows the rules of the Suicide Squad: those who hesitate will be killed. Those who retreat in battle will be killed. Those who disobey orders will be killed. Everyone must supervise each other, do you understand?" Kuang Yun's stern gaze finally landed on Lin Feng.
"I understand."
"Good, let's move out."
A group of dozens surged toward Liu Family Courtyard, with Xiang Hu leading the charge at the front. As the second-in-command without real authority in the Suicide Squad, Lin Feng was forced to follow closely behind.
Xiang Hu kicked open the door and then shouted at Lin Feng, "You, go in and kill."
Just as Lin Feng hesitated, Xiang Hu coldly reminded him, "According to Suicide Squad rules, those who hesitate will be killed."
"Damn it, I'll remember this grudge," Lin Feng thought to himself before being the first to rush inside.
The guards of Lin Family Courtyard spotted Lin Feng and shouted, "What are you doing here?"
"Go to hell!"
Xiang Hu charged forward in an instant, swinging his large blade at the housekeeper. The blade fell, and the housekeeper's head was severed from his body. Xiang Hu coldly glanced at Lin Feng and said, "If you go to the battlefield, you won't even know how you died."
As the commotion grew louder, the Liu Family's housekeepers gradually woke up. Two of them stumbled out, adjusting their clothes while trying to figure out what was happening. With sleep still in their eyes and mouths agape to ask questions, they were met with a flash of cold light before they breathed their last.
Another housekeeper, slower on his feet, witnessed this scene and trembled in fear, rendered speechless. Forgetting about his disheveled attire, he hurriedly fled for his life.
A member of the Suicide Squad kicked the fleeing man, sending him crashing into the door of the house, which burst open upon impact.
The Suicide Squad members killed anyone they encountered with ruthless efficiency. This left Lin Feng at a loss. He knew that these housekeepers were martial artists who practiced True Qi; before him, they were as defenseless as women unable to lift a chicken.
Lin Feng had never feared bloodshed, but this time his face turned pale. "Leader, why don't we reveal our identities and let them surrender? Why must we kill the innocent?"
"These people are colluding with the demon clan; they deserve to die a thousand deaths. You better rush in; otherwise, I will execute you for cowardice," Xiang Hu barked.
What happened next was even harder for Lin Feng to accept. The members of the Suicide Squad spared neither the elderly nor women and children; wherever they went, they ransacked homes, stuffing valuable items into their pockets.
How was this any different from being robbers?
"Second Steward, wake up! Something terrible has happened!"
"What is it?"
"Robbers have come; they're killing everyone!"
"What? Then hurry and report to the authorities!"
The Second Steward was a frail old man who lived in the inner courtyard and hurriedly stepped outside in a panic.
"To hell with your authority, I'm the one in charge here."
Xiang Hu kicked the Second Steward, sending him crashing to the ground. "Leave him alive, drag him over here."
The Second Steward was badly injured, several of his teeth knocked out. He looked up at Xiang Hu and said, "Sir, didn't we just pay tribute this month? What's going on now?"
"Tribute my ass," Xiang Hu slapped him a few times before pulling out a portrait. "Have you seen this White Face?"
The Second Steward's gaze flickered as he looked at the portrait, but he lowered his head and replied, "No... I haven't seen him."
"You dare to play dumb in front of me? Cut off one of his hands," Xiang Hu ordered.
A member of the Suicide Squad wasted no time and swung his sword down. Blood sprayed as the Second Steward's right hand fell to the ground. He screamed in agony, nearly passing out from the pain.
"This is your last chance. Have you seen him or not?" Xiang Hu asked coldly.
"I have, I have! He’s in the guest room in the back courtyard," the Second Steward said weakly.
"Damn it, you won't be honest until you see blood. Lead the way," Xiang Hu commanded.
The Second Steward guided them through the garden until they reached a loft. He pointed ahead and said, "It's right here."
"Charge!"
Xiang Hu dropped the Second Steward and rushed inside. His speed was so fast that those behind struggled to keep up. With both the General and Governor present today, it was a perfect opportunity to make a name for himself. Xiang Hu was determined to achieve merit, completely disregarding Kuang Yun's instructions regarding Lin Feng.
Everyone pushed forward with all their might, but Lin Feng moved slowly, gradually being overtaken. He found himself at the back of the Suicide Squad.
Lin Feng could not accept the plundering of ordinary families and was unwilling to get involved with them.
"Get lost."
A loud shout came from the front of the pavilion, the voice booming like thunder. Lin Feng saw the entire pavilion tremble slightly.
"What a powerful presence."
Lin Feng felt a chill in his heart, knowing he was no match for the person inside. He guessed that everyone from the Suicide Squad who rushed in would likely be wiped out.
"This Kuang Yun must know how strong that person is. To gain merit, he sends an entire team to their deaths. He's ruthless enough; I won't play along with you."
Lin Feng glanced elsewhere, where a group of figures hurriedly ran toward the shadows. He decided to chase after them.
