Chapter Seventy-Eight: A Disastrous Collapse
Lin Feng sat atop the Spirit Steed, gazing into the distance. The Demon Army formed a line resembling the letter 'I' across the White Snowfield, this horizontal formation expanding as the number of demonic troops increased. The swirling snow kicked up by the massive force resembled a sandstorm, sweeping across the land with an intimidating presence.
To the left of the Horizontal Blade Camp was the Breaking Cloud Camp led by War Maniac, while to the right stood the Lin County Troops, forming the right flank of the Dongping County army. In the center of all formations in Dongping County was the General's Camp led by Tang Jiner.
As the demon forces assembled, their infantry raised their sabers and charged forward. Most of these foot soldiers were Cultivators, yet like their human counterparts, they were all at the Foundation Realm.
Watching countless demon infantry advance, the Tang Empire's Border Troops did not engage but maintained their formation, standing ready for battle.
At the forefront were the Shield Bearers, followed by Spear Soldiers, then archers and Crossbowmen. Armored Soldiers stood at the back, waiting for their moment to strike.
“Boom.”
As the demon forces approached, the War Drum of the Tang Empire sounded. All soldiers of the Tang Empire immediately displayed expressions of determination.
“Boom.”
With a second beat of the War Drum, the soldiers could not help but shout “Kill!”
“Boom.”
At the third beat, the soldiers gripped their weapons tightly, their blood boiling with excitement.
“Boom, boom, boom, boom.”
The War Drum resonated steadily as the soldiers of the Tang Empire stepped forward in unison with each beat, their heavy footsteps shaking the ground with a Thunderous Roar.
At that moment, the demon infantry had already reached them.
Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!
The sounds echoed as countless demon soldiers collided against shields. Just as they raised their massive blades to strike at the infantry ahead, they were pierced through by Spear Soldiers positioned behind the Shield Bearers of the Tang Empire.
Some tenacious demon infantry managed to evade the attack from the Spear Soldier and took the opportunity to slash a blade across the neck of the Shield Bearer, decapitating him instantly.
In the vast Snowfield, the snow was no longer white but had turned into a murky shade of dark gray. Blood flowed across many areas, transforming the white snow into a crimson hue.
The Tang Empire and the demon forces clashed for the first time in a brutal and fierce confrontation. Waves of warriors from both sides charged fearlessly into battle, determined to slay their enemies.
The sounds of shouting, screams, and howling winds mixed together, echoing throughout the entire Snowfield.
Due to the Tang Empire's well-structured formations and coordinated strategies, they held the upper hand in this initial clash. The front lines of both armies became littered with numerous corpses and pools of blood.
These bodies continued to accumulate, with those behind stepping over their fallen comrades to press on with the fight. Blood flowed more freely, staining the ice and snow, infusing the cold wind with a metallic scent.
Witnessing all this, Lindor exclaimed, "My lord, look! We have the advantage."
Lindor was one of the Armored Soldiers, clad in black Xuanjia armor, standing in a line with his fellow Armored Soldiers from the Horizontal Blade Camp. To his left stood Chang Long and to his right was Hu Bing. Lin Feng, wearing silver High-Level Battle Armor, stood at the front of their formation.
Lin Feng's gaze was not focused on the demons but rather on the Breaking Cloud Camp beside him.
As the battle progressed, the brave and resilient soldiers of the Tang Empire maintained their advantage, which invigorated their morale and fueled their fighting spirit.
However, a subtle change occurred at that moment.
The army from Dongping County had formed a straight line but began to show a gap as troops retreated from their right flank. This was extremely detrimental to their battle strategy. If there was even a single flaw in their defensive formation, the Demon Army would exploit it immediately, breaking through the Tang Empire's defenses.
"My lord, look! The Breaking Cloud Camp is not advancing with our main force; they are actually retreating," Chang Long said in panic.
Not only Chang Long but all the brothers from adjacent camps were equally alarmed. Their steadfast formation was being compromised; they could lose protection on their flanks and rear, making it impossible to continue fighting effectively.
Lin Feng had already sensed trouble brewing but could only let out a long sigh.
"The War Maniac has become a deadly liability instead of an asset."
Breaking Cloud Camp halted its advance and began to slowly retreat. This caused the camps on both sides to hesitate, fearing a flanking attack from the enemy.
Soon, like a chain reaction, the entire Dongping County and the armies of neighboring counties were affected, all hesitating and unwilling to move forward.
The entrenched formation began to show signs of loosening at that moment.
The Demon Army would not let such an opportunity slip by; they charged with all their might, determined to tear open that gap completely. If they succeeded, today's Battle would end in victory.
"All Armored Warriors, follow me into battle!"
With a loud shout, Lin Feng was the first to charge forward. Chang Long, Hu Bing, and Lindor simultaneously commanded their respective Armored Soldiers to follow closely behind. In this critical moment, Lin Feng did not bother to consult Shen Jiahe and took the initiative to lead the Armored Soldiers towards the gap.
At that moment, the demon infantry had already penetrated deep into the ranks of the Tang Empire infantry, creating a gaping hole in their formation. The arrival of Lin Feng and his Armored Soldiers made quick work of the demon infantry, eliminating them entirely and sealing the breach.
Although the gap was closed, the impact of Breaking Cloud Camp's retreat had not dissipated. The once straight line of troops had now become a crooked formation.
It seemed that the demon's Armored Soldiers had anticipated this situation; they suddenly launched an early assault from various directions into the ranks of the Tang Empire.
The Tang Empire's Armored Soldiers quickly mobilized, but it was too late. The Tang Empire was thrown into complete chaos.
From above, it appeared that the Demon Clan Armored Soldiers had formed an encirclement around the General's Camp. They had long planned to strike down Tang Jiner amidst the turmoil.
"It's a mess, completely chaotic. Many are retreating. It seems we can only fall back to the city and regroup before we can strike again. Everyone, return to the city with me."
With this command from Shen Jiahe, most of the brothers from Horizontal Blade Camp retreated. A cunning smile appeared on his face; he was aware of some of the grand schemes plotted by the Governor. Thus, he added chaos to chaos.
Chang Long, witnessing the defeated Tang Empire Soldiers, found it hard to believe what was happening. They had been in a strong position just moments ago but had turned into frightened strays in an instant. Too many factions were in retreat.
"My lord, what should we do?" asked Lindor.
"My lord, we need to retreat quickly. If we wait any longer, we won't be able to escape."
Some Captains were anxious, as the Armored Soldiers of the Demon Clan had launched an attack from the center of the army in Dongping County. The chaos of war had not yet reached the flanks, but it was dangerously close.
While Lin Feng was contemplating how to break the deadlock, Mo Mo appeared before him. She looked at Lin Feng and said, "Lord Lin, I just sensed that the General has been surrounded by the Demon Clan Armored Soldiers. The troops from the General's Camp and the Imperial Guard Headquarters have been cut off from retreat. The General is in grave danger."
"There are so many Demon Race soldiers; won't we be walking into death if we go?" a fearful Captain said.
Mo Mo's gaze remained fixed on Lin Feng as she awaited his response, hoping that he would not misjudge the situation regarding the General.
The snow fell heavier. The new recruits of the Horizontal Blade Camp and the Armored Soldiers all stared at Lin Feng, waiting for his decision. A deathly silence enveloped everyone.
Seeing Lin Feng hesitate, disappointment flashed across Mo Mo's face. She sighed, her eyes revealing disdain and mockery. She said lightly, "I understand now."
"Indeed, there isn't a decent man in this world."
With a cold snort, Mo Mo rode her warhorse and galloped toward the fiercest battlefield without looking back.
The initial goal of the Demon Clan's expedition was merely to seize weapons and supplies. Later, Jiang Wannian approached with an offer of substantial rewards for a deal: to incite chaos and take the opportunity to kill Tang Jiner.
The target of the Demon Clan was Tang Jiner; thus, they maintained an absolute advantage without launching a full-scale assault. As long as they controlled the overall situation, they could prevail.
"My lord, we must retreat quickly; otherwise, it will be too late."
Lin Feng remained silent—not out of hesitation but deep in thought about how to resolve the crisis. Seeing Mo Mo, a frail woman, charge out, he immediately shouted, "Mo Mo, you girl, stop right there!"
The Mentor was indeed powerful, but her physical body was very fragile. Going alone into the Demon Clan would mean certain death.
Hearing Lin Feng's shout, Mo Mo reined in her horse and turned to face him. She calmly replied, "Lord Lin, are you suggesting we go together to die?"
"You come back here! Why can't you just stay put? What are you making such a fuss about? I was just thinking about how to break this deadlock when your commotion made me forget everything!" Lin Feng exclaimed in exasperation.
Upon hearing this, rather than getting angry, Mo Mo burst into laughter.
In the midst of the snowstorm, her smile bloomed like a quietly blossoming Orchid, captivating all who beheld it.
Lin Feng looked at his brothers with a serious expression and said, "As we venture forth, I do not know what fate awaits us. Time is of the essence, so I have but one thing to say. Whoever stands with me today in life or death shall be my brother. Those who wish to leave, I will not hold it against you."
Hearing the word "brother," Chang Long's blood surged with excitement. Lin Feng had risked his life to save his master that day, and Chang Long had long admired him deeply. He immediately declared, "That day, I fought alongside my master against the Demon Thief with great satisfaction. Today, I will follow my master to slay the Demon Thief once more."
Lindor also spoke resolutely, "Master, our Solitary Moon City has never been so glorious. We cannot allow others to look down upon us today. Killing the demon clan is what we of Solitary Moon City excel at."
"Very well. Armored Soldiers, follow me into battle. The infantry brothers shall return to the city for real-time support. Today's primary mission is to rescue people; we must act swiftly."
"Kill!"
Lin Feng led the way, followed closely by fifty Armored Soldiers. Mo Mo was positioned at the center of the Armored Soldiers. The group surged forward, a mighty force charging toward the Demon Army.
