Chapter 199: Years to Come
Lin Feng watched as the surprise in Wind Spirit's eyes turned into desolation and sorrow. He suddenly felt a pang of cruelty within himself. However, he could only be cruel.
Lin Feng calmly said, "I am the negotiating representative of the Tang Dynasty, and I have important matters to discuss with Your Highness."
Wind Spirit forced a bitter smile. "Yes, you are a soldier of the Tang Dynasty. I thought..."
I thought it was that Young Master Feng who missed me and came to find me. This latter thought remained unspoken, buried deep within her heart, leaving only bitterness on her face.
Mulan observed the strange and awkward atmosphere and said, "Princess, this person is General Feng, the deputy commander of the Northern Frontier Army of the Tang Dynasty."
"General Feng, is it? Hmm, understood."
Wind Spirit seemed somewhat distracted and then said, "Mulan, you may leave now."
Once Mulan exited, only Wind Spirit and Lin Feng remained in the tent. Wind Spirit couldn't help but ask, "It's been a while since we last met. How have you been?"
"I'm doing fine. How about you?"
"I'm well. But I see that your complexion doesn't seem very good."
"Perhaps it's because I've been battling someone recently and haven't been sleeping much," Lin Feng joked, trying to ease the awkwardness.
Wind Spirit laughed. "Who is this person? So capable that they have made Young Master Feng lose sleep?"
"Ah, this person would take more than three nights to fully describe. She is a female general, skilled in leading troops and training soldiers. I've heard that she could read military strategy by the age of eight and at ten demanded troops from her father to form the Wind Army. Now, her Wind Army is the strongest among many armies in her country."
"Oh? Is there more?" Wind Spirit feigned ignorance.
"Of course! Not only has she trained a powerful Wind Army, but I've also heard she possesses beauty that could topple kingdoms."
"To have such a remarkable person who excels in both martial prowess and beauty is indeed rare," Wind Spirit praised.
"Lin Feng sighed, 'Indeed, how could we possibly sleep early in the face of such an opponent?'
'Feng Gongzi smiled,' Wind Spirit said shyly.
After a few jokes lightened the atmosphere, Lin Feng stated directly, 'Princess, I have come today to seek peace.'
'Why seek peace when we hold the upper hand in the Northern Frontier of the Tang Dynasty?' Wind Spirit feigned confusion.
'We hold the upper hand? Please don’t belittle me, Princess,' Lin Feng replied with a bitter smile.
'What you say is incorrect. The Wind Army has just suffered a defeat at the hands of the Northern Frontier Army; did you not reward your troops?' Wind Spirit laughed.
Lin Feng said, 'That was merely a skirmish.'
'But the entire Jiuzhou Continent is buzzing with rumors. The Wind Army, invincible and never defeated, has fallen to someone named Lin Feng. As you can see, my Wind Army is quite unconvinced.'
'What does the princess intend to do?'
'Once we have rested enough, we can only continue fighting. I cannot let my subordinates lose heart.'
Upon hearing this, Lin Feng's expression darkened. If the Wind Army continued their assault, the Tang Dynasty would truly be on the brink of collapse.
Wind Spirit looked at Lin Feng thoughtfully and said, 'I have heard that the leader of the Northern Frontier Army is the newly appointed Lin Feng Commander. You are acquainted with this person; what kind of man is he?'
'Princess, you mean Lin Feng? I know him quite well; we are practically sworn brothers, close enough to share the same pair of trousers. He is about my height but slightly less handsome. And he is quite the lecher.'
'Is that so? The top contender at the Jiuzhou Gathering Conference is actually a lecher?'
'Yes, indeed. Not far from here; you know he has a junior sister named Lin Miaomiao, right?'
'Ethereal Body, renowned far and wide.'
"This can be considered his girlfriend. However, there are rumors in the Tang Dynasty that Lin Feng and Princess Jian'an have some untold secrets."
"I haven't heard of that."
"Otherwise, why do you think he fights so desperately with you? It's all for a woman, driven by anger. And also, a female disciple from the Red Flower Palace died at the Azure Cloud Sect's Martial Examination because of him. You've heard of that, right?"
"I've heard a bit about it."
"Look at that, just casually mentioning it, and there are already three women involved. Behind the scenes, you have no idea how many women he has. I'm the only one who knows the most."
"But isn't it common for men to have multiple wives and concubines?" Wind Spirit said dismissively.
"What?"
Lin Feng nearly choked on his own spit; how could Wind Spirit tarnish his reputation like this?
"Enough of that nonsense. Let's talk about matters of righteousness," Lin Feng shifted back to the main topic.
Wind Spirit replied calmly, "I need a reason."
Lin Feng looked serious. "For the sake of Wind Nation and the fortunes of the Tang Dynasty."
"What do you mean by that?"
"My Tang Emperor has fallen. You must have heard about it."
"This is indeed the best opportunity for me to attack the Tang Dynasty."
"The princess is a wise person; otherwise, she wouldn't have ordered the Wind Army to halt its advance. With the demon invasion upon our Tang Dynasty and the fall of the Wind Emperor, I believe the princess can guess how coincidental this all is."
"The mastermind behind all this is naturally the Great Zhou. Great Zhou wants to unify the human race."
"If we continue to battle, both sides will suffer. At that point, the Great Zhou will likely reap the benefits."
The Wind Spirit remained silent, as Lin Feng's words echoed her own thoughts. The two were in perfect agreement.
"Your Highness, our common enemy is the Great Zhou. Why must we turn against each other?"
"Alright, I agree. Do you have the peace treaty with you?"
"Huh?"
Lin Feng was taken aback, not expecting the Wind Spirit to agree so quickly. He had prepared a whole speech just to begin.
"Princess, you’re agreeing just like that?"
"Yes. Do you have the treaty with you?"
"I do. But Princess, making such a decision so quickly seems a bit rash."
Lin Feng presented the treaty, believing that such an important matter should at least be discussed in a meeting with the generals.
The Wind Spirit looked at the treaty and said, "You're right. This is a significant matter; I need to think it over carefully. How about this—I’ll give my response after a month."
"The princess is joking." A month? Wasn't that just asking for trouble?
"There’s no problem with signing. I only have one additional condition."
"You can add it right now."
Lin Feng took the treaty back and picked up a pen, waiting for the Wind Spirit's addition.
"Tonight, I hope Feng Gongzi can accompany me to stargaze."
"Ah?"
"This is just a personal condition. However, if you are willing to add it to the covenant, I won't oppose."
"Then let's not write it down." Lin Feng forced a smile.
The two walked side by side in the night, with the moonlight shining perfectly. Its gentle glow fell on Wind Spirit's face, making her appear even more noble and beautiful.
They remained silent for a long time. Eventually, Wind Spirit spoke up, "After the truce, the Northern Frontier of the Tang Dynasty will be safe. Is the Northern Frontier Army planning to advance south?"
"Yes."
"The demon race is cunning, and the Barbarians are brutal. Feng Gongzi, please take care during your journey. Before going into battle, remember to wear your Xuanjia. By the way, do you have Golden Armor for protection?" Wind Spirit asked casually, but her deep concern for Lin Feng was hard to conceal.
"Princess, you worry too much. I understand; I have Golden Armor as well."
"Golden Armor is only available to royal descendants or trusted ministers. Even Lin Commander might not be able to obtain it. How did you come by it?" Wind Spirit inquired.
"Well..." Lin Feng thought to himself. He couldn't reveal that it was given to him by Tang Jiner when he traveled to the Northern Frontier. It was indeed Tang Jiner's Golden Armor.
"I found it by chance."
"Feng Gongzi is quite lucky."
Wind Spirit snorted lightly, clearly unconvinced. She had originally planned to give him her own Golden Armor for protection, but now she couldn't, which left her feeling somewhat annoyed.
"You should also take care of yourself, Your Highness. The three princes are often swayed by the schemes of the Great Zhou; it's easy to dodge a direct attack but hard to guard against hidden ones," Lin Feng reminded her.
"You don't need to worry about me. Those three can't do anything to me," Wind Spirit replied confidently with a smile.
After a long silence, Lin Feng said, "Regardless of what happens after this battle, either the demon race or the Tang Dynasty will disappear from the Jiuzhou Continent."
"Indeed. If the Demon Clan were to disappear, the Three Great Empires of Humanity could maintain their existing balance. But if the Tang Dynasty were to fall, the Battle would have just begun." Wind Spirit's expression was grave.
"Your Highness, if one day the Tang Dynasty struggles to hold on, I hope you will be willing to lend a hand and support us," Lin Feng earnestly pleaded.
Wind Spirit smiled and said, "Today, in exchange for peace, my personal condition is that you accompany me to enjoy the night view. If in the future I need to mobilize the Wind Army, what do you think my personal condition should be then?"
"Your Highness always enjoys joking."
"I'm not joking; I'm serious. If that time comes, my personal condition will be that you marry me." Wind Spirit looked at Lin Feng with a serious expression.
Lin Feng met Wind Spirit's tender gaze and felt his heart race. He immediately turned his head away. Faced with such a peerless woman, so talented and kind-hearted, who could remain unmoved?
"The princess is joking too much. What merit do I, Lin Feng, have to deserve the princess..."
"What did you just call yourself?"
"I called myself Feng Ling."
"Wrong. Just now you were Lin Feng."
"Impossible! How could I be that lecher? I am a gentleman."
"Are you Lin Feng or Feng Ling?" Wind Spirit looked at Lin Feng suspiciously.
"I am of course Lin Feng... No, wait... I'm not Feng Ling; I am Lin Feng... No, I'm not Lin Feng... You've completely confused me."
"Hehe, I'll let you off this time."
Wind Spirit had an idea of what was going on; the truth no longer seemed as important.
"The Wind Army will be mobilized. That personal condition of mine is a necessary requirement. So be prepared," Wind Spirit reminded him once more.
"Your Highness, I sincerely congratulate you on the signing of the peace treaty. On behalf of the Great Tang, I promise that our Wind Nation will maintain everlasting friendship with you."
"Alright, then I will sign."
After the treaty was signed, Wind Spirit personally saw Lin Feng off. As Lin Feng gradually walked away and was about to board the ship, Wind Spirit couldn't help but call out, "Lin Feng, wait."
Upon hearing this, Lin Feng turned around just in time to be enveloped in a warm embrace from a beautiful figure. He caught a faint scent emanating from Wind Spirit, feeling somewhat entranced.
"Years may pass before we meet again. You must stay alive, promise me?" Wind Spirit's voice was slightly hoarse.
"You silly, someone as afraid of death as I am will definitely seize any opportunity to survive," Lin Feng joked.
Reluctantly, they bid farewell.
Wind Spirit watched as Lin Feng sailed away, murmuring to herself: "Years may pass, and it seems that even the finest moments are but illusions; no matter how many charms there are, who will share them with me?" (To be continued)
