Xunuo let out a cold snort, secretly pleased with himself. He held a piece of spirit stone in each hand, facing the remaining Black-Clad Youth. The immense pain in his back made Xunuo's expression twisted. The four Heavenly Shadow Spikes that had just killed the Elder Youth, along with another one that followed, turned their aim toward the young boy and shot forward. Then came the sound of five crisp clangs. The Five Shadow Needles rolled back, bouncing off the boy's armor, which rippled as he staggered back several steps. However, after the ripple, he appeared completely unharmed.
Xunuo felt his heart bleed: they were all magical artifacts, yet the boy's single strike had nearly cost him his life, while his five needles couldn't even scratch the opponent.
The Heavenly Shadow Spikes flew back to him, and Xunuo opened his mouth wide, spitting out a mouthful of Essence Blood onto them. Instantly, the Five Shadow Needles erupted with Purple Light, transforming into over two feet in size. He then formed a hand seal and shouted, "Swift."
The Five Shadow Needles spun rapidly and flew in a line toward the Black-Clad Youth. In the next moment, after four more clangs, the first four Heavenly Shadow Spikes aligned and thrust forward but were rebounded back. However, they managed to create a dent at that point and cracked several fissures radiating outward from it. Finally, the Fifth Shadow Needle pierced through the armor and embedded itself into the boy's body.
The boy let out a terrible scream and rolled in mid-air before hastily retreating.
Xunuo was nearly out of magic power; otherwise, he would have activated the Heavenly Shadow Spike inside the boy to finish him off in one roll.
At this moment, terror filled the boy's eyes. He was clearly shocked by the bloody scene before him. Simultaneously, with the Heavenly Shadow Spike piercing through his chest, nearly reaching his heart, although it hadn't taken his life immediately, the excruciating pain of his shattered ribs made him abandon all resistance and attempt to flee.
However, he also understood that both sides were now locked in a fight to the death. The opponent would not allow him to escape easily. He raised his hand and cast two Attack Talismans before turning to flee.
In truth, this boy lacked practical combat experience and could not quickly or accurately assess the battlefield situation. Xunuo was currently at his last gasp; he could not retract the Five Shadow Needles he had launched. If he had even a bit of strength left, he would have manipulated the Heavenly Shadow Spike embedded in the boy’s body to crush him into pieces with a mere twist. Yet Xunuo was more injured than he was.
That last attack had left a nearly two-foot-long gash on Xunuo's back that severed his spine and pierced through his lungs. The little magic power he had left was barely enough to keep his body from splitting in half; he didn't even have enough energy left to activate his Protective Shield.
Anyone with even a bit of insight would not make such a self-destructive move at this point. Yet this coward did just that—and did so exceptionally cleanly.
Xunuo looked up to see two Talisman approaching him. One was the Blazing Talisman, and the other was the Ice Seal Talisman, both of which were intermediate Attack Talismans. At this point, Xunuo had neither the heart nor the strength to escape. Instead, he felt a desperate resolve to fight to the bitter end against his opponent.
Currently, he was drained of magic and severely injured. Meanwhile, his opponent seemed to have lost their composure and focus. If he waited for them to regain their senses, he feared he would not even have a chance to fight back.
With this thought in mind, Xunuo grabbed five defensive Talismans with one hand and slapped them onto himself. However, these were all low-level defensive Talismans, and they were all that remained to him. With his other hand raised, he sent out an intermediate Attack Talisman, Thunder Flame, chasing after the young man.
In an instant, a blue shield with three yellow layers lit up around Xunuo. The outermost layer was a bone shield that looked ominous. The next moment, two Attack Talismans released by the Black-Clad Youth surged forward toward Xunuo.
The Blazing Talisman quickly transformed into a ball of crimson flames and struck the white Bone Shield with a loud bang. The Bone Shield creaked under the impact and was pushed back against the outermost yellow Blue Shield. The outermost yellow Blue Shield shook violently.
Seeing that the white Bone Shield had lost its integrity under the force of the Blazing Talisman, Xunuo was relieved that it had managed to withstand this blow without being destroyed. However, not only did the Blazing Talisman cause the white Bone Shield to creak ominously, but it also scorched the outermost yellow Blue Shield with crackling sounds. The unbearable heat wave penetrated through several layers of defense and enveloped Xunuo, making him feel as if he were in a furnace; his hair and clothes flared up as if caught in a gust of wind.
Xunuo pointed at the white Bone Shield, which emitted a piercing sound as it pushed the crimson flames away slightly.
Just as Xunuo felt that the temperature had become bearable again, the second Talisman unleashed by the Black-Clad Youth arrived suddenly. This Ice Seal Talisman appeared before him and transformed into an Ice Jade Pillar that struck down on the white Bone Shield. It became the last straw that broke the camel's back, shattering the white Bone Shield completely and continuing its momentum to crash into the outermost yellow Blue Shield.
Although the yellow Blue Shield wobbled under this attack, it was evidently sturdier than the white Bone Shield and did not show signs of giving way. However, after colliding with the Ice Jade Pillar, it immediately transformed into chilling flames that wrapped around Xunuo entirely. At that moment, without the white Bone Shield to block it, the crimson flames also surged toward Xunuo.
The Cold Flame and blazing fire collided violently outside Xunuo's protective barrier. The two opposing forces enveloped him in a chaotic mix of ice and fire.
Xunuo found himself in a bizarre situation. Outside him was a protective barrier formed by four layers of defensive Talismans. The outer layer consisted of two Attack Talismans that manifested as cold and fiery flames, each occupying half of his space and wrapping him in a sphere. Where the Cold Flame met the fire crackled loudly as sparks flew. Xunuo felt half of his body freezing cold while the other half burned fiercely, sizzling from the heat.
He had no time to worry about whether his own intermediate Attack Talisman, Thunder Flame, would be effective. Preserving his life was paramount. Earlier, he had unleashed a thunderous strike that instantly killed Elder Youth and expended much Essence Blood while heavily injuring the younger boy with a Five-Strike Barrage. This had drained all his magic completely. Now he tightly gripped his spirit stones to replenish some magic energy. First, Xunuo activated his Protective Shield Spell.
Xunuo knew that his Protective Shield was inferior to these basic defensive Talismans. However, with so few means of defense at his disposal, he had no choice but to use everything he had and hope for the best.
On one side was the icy cold, and on the other was blazing fire. Xunuo could barely endure the pressure even through several layers of defense. Not to mention being directly under the dual trials of Cold Flame, where the yellow protective barrier was tested. Especially at the point where the two Cold Flames clashed, it quickly became weak and ultimately collapsed with a loud crack. Once the resistance from the Cold Flames eased, they surged downward together.
As a result, the two Cold Flames overlapped extensively and erupted in a tremendous explosion. The immediate consequence was that the second layer of the protective barrier crumbled without offering any resistance. With that, the Cold Flames rampaged freely, and Xunuo seemed to become a mere background character—an unfortunate victim caught in the collision of the two flames.
However, this clash of two opposing forces greatly drained their respective powers. Outside of Xunuo's own magical shield, these two forces finally dissipated after a thunderous explosion. The last layer of his Blue Shield flickered with red light before collapsing.
At this moment, Xunuo was in a dire state; his clothes were tattered and burned away. One side of his body was charred black while the other was encased in a layer of ice. He dared not move his limbs for fear that even a slight tremor would cause them to shatter and fall apart.
Xunuo's mind went blank, devoid of any strategy. His Divine Sense summoned a Flying Talisman into his body, instinctively propelling him in one direction. Moments later, he returned to collect the scattered Heavenly Shadow Spikes on the ground, only to discover that the young boy had perished beneath the Thunder Flame Talisman, reduced to ashes.
Only then did Xunuo regain his composure. He drew out a Fireball Talisman and incinerated another corpse before gathering up the scattered magical tools and storage bags on the ground. He chose a direction and fled.
The fluctuations of magical energy from this battle were immense; Xunuo believed it would surely attract the attention of other Cultivators. Therefore, he used several Flying Talismans in succession to change directions multiple times until he arrived at a familiar place. Upon closer inspection, he realized it was where he had escaped from Nanyue Sect's pursuit years ago after eliminating two old foes.
Xunuo then recalled the Water Cave where the Clam Spirit had hidden. Back then, he had been terrified of this Clam Spirit due to his ignorance of its depths. Now that he had gained experience, he understood that this Clam Spirit posed no threat to him—it was as insignificant as an ant.
