“ Wan Qiu, come here.”
Wan Qiu was still angry about what happened that day, so she turned her face away, pretending not to hear, and let out a soft huff through her nose.
“You're sleeping in the bed tonight!” Yun Daoyun said with a giggle, not at all upset.
“Really?” Wan Qiu immediately ran over, her face lighting up with surprise.
She saw Yun Daoyun standing in front of the entrance to an abandoned courtyard, lost in thought, and urged, “Let’s find an inn quickly; it’s almost dark.”
With a cheerful smile, Yun Daoyun pointed at the courtyard. “Tonight, we’re staying here.”
“Uh… it seems there’s a presence of spirits here…” Wan Qiu sniffed the air; the scent was familiar—it must be another Fox demon.
To be honest, she didn’t want to see one of her kind captured by Yun Daoyun. After all, it was incredibly difficult to cultivate into a spirit; countless little demons were struck down by heavenly lightning the moment they took on physical form.
“It’s precisely because there are spirits that we’re staying here. Don’t forget, I’m a Taoist priest who specializes in capturing demons,” Yun Daoyun replied nonchalantly. He had finally tracked down the whereabouts of the troublesome Fox demon, excitement and anticipation gleaming in his eyes.
“Uh, fine.” Wan Qiu reluctantly agreed. Considering she would be sleeping in the bed tonight, she pretended to be unaware and nodded slightly.
The courtyard had been neglected for a long time, overgrown with weeds and littered with crumbling walls. The two strolled slowly around the yard, their footsteps crunching on the dry grass.
With her keen eyes, Wan Qiu excitedly spotted a patch of small mushrooms at the base of the wall. The mushrooms were plump and fresh, resembling tiny umbrellas.
Her eyes sparkled with excitement as she bounced over to Yun Daoyun, her hands gesturing animatedly. "Quick, quick! Take out the Sand Pot from your bag. We can stew some mushrooms for dinner!"
Yun Daoyun seemed less enthusiastic about mushrooms; he frowned slightly and reluctantly took a bite before putting down his bowl and chopsticks, patting his stomach to indicate he was full.
Wan Qiu found it strange, tilting her head in confusion, but she was still happy to finally have a hearty meal.
For the past few days, she had hardly eaten enough—either there was nothing to eat or not enough to satisfy her hunger. In contrast, Yun Daoyun, despite being a big man, ate even less than a woman, always just sampling the food.
After finishing the meal, Wan Qiu quickly tidied up the bedding. Although it was simple, she arranged it neatly.
Just as she was about to invite Yun Daoyun inside to rest, she heard a loud creak. The sound was particularly jarring in the quiet courtyard as the gate swung open, and a large group of people rushed in.
From the looks of it, they seemed to be a traveling merchant group, all dusty and weary from a long day’s journey, their faces etched with fatigue.
At the forefront was a young gentleman dressed in a luxurious Brocade Robe. Upon seeing Yun Daoyun and Wan Qiu, he paused in surprise, his eyes widening slightly as if he hadn’t expected anyone to be living in this abandoned courtyard. He leaned down to whisper something to a servant beside him.
After a moment, the servant swaggered over, tossing a few pieces of silver onto the ground with a crisp clink. "My young master prefers peace and quiet; you two should take this money and find somewhere else to stay."
Wan Qiu was about to refuse when she heard Yun Daoyun agree immediately, his voice firm and decisive.
Surprised, Wan Qiu turned her head sharply, her eyes wide. She then heard Yun Daoyun quietly say, "Why not take the money? I could use it to buy a new pair of boots." As he spoke, his eyes sparkled as if he could already envision himself wearing those new boots.
Wan Qiu felt extremely displeased at being dismissed for just a few pieces of silver after finally getting to sleep on a bed. Her brows furrowed tightly together. As night fell, she quietly climbed over the wall into the courtyard, planning to scare that young gentleman as a ghost.
The moonlight spilled into the courtyard, casting a pale glow.
Wan Qiu cast a spell, her face turning as white as paper, her eyes popping out of their sockets, trailing long strands of blood—a truly terrifying sight.
Then she floated and drifted, her body as light as a fallen leaf, gliding to the window of the young gentleman, her footsteps silent.
Before she could make a move, a low moan drifted from within the room, laced with a hint of intimacy.
Curiously, she leaned closer to the paper window, her nose nearly touching it. She wet her finger and carefully poked a small hole, peering through with her eyes.
Inside, the red candles flickered brightly, and two figures were entwined on the bed, their forms barely visible in the candlelight.
Wan Qiu froze for a moment, her body stiffening slightly before she awkwardly turned her gaze away, feeling a mix of emotions swirling within her.
Suddenly, she bumped into something behind her. Startled, she was about to cry out when a large hand reached over from behind and covered her mouth—warm and broad.
“It’s me,” Yun Daoyun whispered softly, his voice barely audible.
