"I'm sorry, I can't directly say that man's name. Really, it's too sensitive. Almost everyone in our city knows him, and he appears in our local newspapers and on television every day."
The reason Liu Yan didn't dare to tell the police his name and preferred to disguise herself as a mentally ill person was that she feared attracting even greater trouble or even death.
She lowered her head slightly, a flicker of fear and helplessness crossing her eyes, her hands unconsciously twisting together.
I didn't want to ask Liu Yan about her next plan. I knew she was a strong woman, and her thoughts were intricate beyond my imagination.
Sitting in the car, I turned slightly to look at her and asked casually, "Where are we going now?" My tone was calm, but my eyes held a hint of curiosity and concern.
Liu Yan's gaze was fixed on the windshield, her expression resolute. "Back to Forest Community!" Her face was serious, her lips pressed together slightly.
"Back to Forest Community? Are you out of your mind?" I widened my eyes in shock, leaning forward slightly, my voice involuntarily rising a bit.
She smiled bitterly and said, "Often the most dangerous place is the safest place."
That smile carried a touch of bitterness and determination, yet her eyes revealed a glimmer of resolve.
When I drove up to her house, she pointed to a nearby building and said, "Park over there!" Her fingers were slender and pale, trembling slightly in the sunlight.
After getting out of the car, she didn't lead me to her residence but quickly walked toward another building.
"I bought this apartment with his money. It was originally meant for my parents, but now it has become my refuge," she said slowly, a hint of sadness and helplessness in her eyes as she sighed softly.
I asked her, "What are you planning to do now?"
Standing beside her, I focused intently on her, waiting for her answer.
Liu Yan furrowed her brow in thought for a moment before saying, "Today is the eighteenth. He goes to his named company every month on this day to collect his consulting fee. After that, he goes to the Cigar Room at Wanjin Hotel to enjoy himself. We should go there to find him!"
I saw a flicker of vengeful light in her eyes as she clenched her fists unconsciously.
I asked again, "Are you planning to kill him?"
She laughed lightly. "Of course not. How could I kill him? He knows I haven't exposed our relationship; he knows I'm not a threat. I just want to ask him if he still loves me and why he put that woman's body in my room."
Her smile was tinged with self-mockery as she shook her head slightly.
To be honest, I found her reasoning rather flimsy, but I understood that a woman's thoughts are often beyond comprehension. I shrugged helplessly and let out a soft sigh.
Liu Yan walked into the room to take a shower, and when she came out, we headed out together.
We parked the car outside the entrance of Wanjin Hotel. I sat in the driver's seat, my eyes fixed on the hotel entrance, waiting until noon to finally see the plump Big Shot swaggering in with his briefcase.
Honestly, I considered myself quite handsome, and Liu Yan could certainly be called a rare gem among women, so no one stopped us to question our presence as we made our way inside.
I lifted my chin slightly, wearing a hint of confidence, while Liu Yan elegantly walked beside me.
Standing outside the Cigar Room that man often reserved, Liu Yan gently grasped my arm, her eyes filled with trust and reliance as she said, "You wait for me outside. If I scream inside, you rush in to save me. After all, that man killed a woman; do you think he would hesitate to harm me?"
I was about to speak when she firmly shook her head. "But I insist you can't come in with me."
Watching her alluring figure walk into the private room, I felt a wave of frustration wash over me. I pulled out a cigarette from my pocket, lit it, and took a deep drag. My ears perked up as I leaned slightly forward, listening intently for any sign of Liu Yan's scream.
However, I heard nothing. She had barely been inside for a minute when she burst out again, her clothes disheveled and a sharp knife clutched in her hand, its blade glistening with fresh blood.
My heart raced in shock as I rushed forward to embrace her, anxiously asking, "What happened? Are you okay?" My eyes were filled with worry and fear.
Her voice trembled as she replied, "I killed him! I killed him!"
Then she collapsed into my arms, sobbing uncontrollably... Her body shook violently as tears soaked my shirt.
At that moment, a waiter passed by us. My heart tightened as I quickly wrapped my arms around Liu Yan and pressed my lips against hers to stifle her cries.
We pretended to be a couple in love; I lowered my head slightly and gazed at her tenderly to divert the waiter's attention.
I admit her lips were incredibly soft, sweeter than honey. My heart raced involuntarily as complex emotions surged within me.
Sitting in the red Polo car, I remained silent, my brow furrowed with countless thoughts swirling in my mind.
Liu Yan sat beside me, chattering about her experience in the Cigar Room. When she entered the smoke-filled room, that Big Shot had grinned lewdly and pulled her into his embrace without saying a word—just kissing her fervently.
Liu Yan slightly closed her eyes, and in an instant, the hatred she felt for that Big Shot vanished.
In this private room, they had been countless times before, knowing that no waitstaff would come in to disturb them.
Liu Yan was under the impression that the Big Shot would engage with her here as he had in the past.
But she was wrong. When she opened her eyes in a daze, she saw through a mirror in the room that the overweight man was holding a sharp knife meant for cutting cigars, its tip slowly rising, aimed at her throat.
Her eyes filled with fear and despair, and her body began to tremble violently.
The power of a woman's fear is truly incredible; often, it leads to the most astonishing reactions in the face of danger.
Liu Yan suddenly widened her eyes, using all her strength to grasp the man's wrist. With a forceful twist, the blade plunged into his body.
Years of indulgence had severely eroded the man's strength, leaving him weak. The grip on his wrist could not withstand even a gentle pull from a frail woman—perhaps it wasn't so gentle after all. Her face bore a hint of terror mixed with determination, her body still trembling slightly.
I discarded the cigarette butt in my hand and looked at her, asking Liu Yan, "What do we do now?" My voice was hoarse, and there was a hint of confusion in my gaze.
Liu Yan stared blankly, numbly saying, "We go back to Forest Community, have a meal, take a shower, change clothes, and then return to the hospital. No one will know we were here. In at most a year, I can be discharged due to an improvement in my symptoms. I study Psychiatry; I know when to pretend my symptoms are getting better. Wait for me for a year, and we can be together forever—as long as you don't reveal our secret."
She gave me an ambiguous smile that carried a hint of expectation and temptation, softening my heart... I slightly turned my head away to avoid her gaze, lost in thought.
