Li Niannian stood awkwardly at the entrance of the restaurant, taking a step forward only to retreat in frustration.
Her brows were tightly knitted, her eyes filled with conflict and hesitation as she nervously rubbed the hem of her clothes.
What a joke! Just recently, she had offended her boss, and now she was being asked to have dinner with Xu Yuandao. She couldn't help but wonder if her parents were intentionally trying to sabotage her!
How could she possibly face her boss?! Although she hadn’t been demoted out of spite, she had a nagging feeling that she was destined to endure a tragic life of "tortured little wife" from now on.
She had a premonition that Manager Xu would not go easy on her. Oh no...
“Are you going in or not?”
A deep male voice interrupted her thoughts from behind. Li Niannian turned around to see her cold-faced boss!
“Xu... Manager!”
“Is it really necessary to be this scared?” Xu Yuandao appeared with a stern expression, giving her a disapproving glance. His hands were shoved into his pockets, his demeanor indifferent.
It was all because of you, Manager!
“Xu... Manager, I didn’t expect you to arrive so early,” she stammered, lowering her head slightly and avoiding eye contact with Xu Yuandao.
Xu Yuandao could no longer hold back his irritation. Pointing at her nose, he corrected her sternly, “I’m not Xu... Manager!”
"Yes, Xu... Manager." She stumbled over her words, her nerves getting the better of her. Was it really her fault?
Internally, she complained, but her face remained carefully cautious.
"Hurry up and come in!" The woman was dragging her feet, and with every passing moment, he grew increasingly exasperated with Li Niannian.
If it weren't for their parents being friends, he wouldn't have bothered to socialize with her at all. He frowned impatiently and stepped into the dining room first.
At the command, Li Niannian immediately straightened up and replied loudly, "Yes!"
Then, like a well-trained soldier, she marched forward, obediently following behind him.
She thought to herself that if he were displeased for any reason, encountering him again at work would leave her with no way out.
She was always one to read the situation; an apology was unavoidable. Since their parents had arranged this gathering, she would seize the opportunity like a lifeline to make amends.
"Manager, please take a seat!"
Li Niannian wore a smile full of flattery as she quickly stepped forward to pull out his chair. Even when the waiter approached to pour water, she dashed in front to take over the service. "Manager, here’s your water! It's warm; you can rest assured!"
She slightly bent forward, hands offering the cup, her eyes filled with ingratiation.
Seeing Li Niannian's eager attentiveness, Xu Couple couldn't help but feel pleased.
The girl, though not wearing a trace of makeup, had delicate features and an adorable charm. Being the daughter of the the Li Family, it would be wonderful if she could become a match for someone.
However, the the Li Family's parents did not share this sentiment, especially after learning that their clumsy daughter had caused a scene at a wedding banquet, which led to Xu Yuandao getting covered in cream. They felt even more embarrassed and dared not hope that Xu Yuandao would take an interest in their daughter.
"Nian Nian, why are you just standing there? Come sit down," Mother Li said, shooting her a fierce glance that seemed capable of peeling away her skin. Then, with a beaming smile, she turned to Xu Yuandao, her demeanor changing as effortlessly as flipping a page in a book. "Yuan, you must be hungry. Order whatever you like; consider this meal an apology."
"It's my fault for not raising my daughter properly and causing you trouble. My daughter is both foolish and clumsy; she has no talents to speak of. At over twenty years old, she can't even fry a dish properly, and her job situation is mediocre at best. Please don’t hold it against her..."
Mom! Am I still your biological child?
To praise me like this in front of the Manager? How can you do this to me?
Li Niannian's face fell into despair, her eyes filled with resentment as her parents began to use her childhood blunders as conversation starters.
"Oh? You passed the relay baton to someone from another class?" It seemed that signs of her clumsiness had been evident since childhood. Xu Yuandao's lips curled into a mysterious smile, making Li Niannian shiver involuntarily as she instinctively shrank back.
Manager, what are you laughing at? This isn’t funny at all...
