"I just don't agree," Qian Xinyi said stubbornly.
Xu Zhuzhu and Qian Xinyi whispered to each other, and Jiang Chen naturally overheard them. He didn't mind; it was only natural for Qian Xinyi to be cautious around him, much like one would be wary of a potential predator. After all, it was just the two girls traveling abroad, and one should always be on guard.
"I have some things to take care of later, so I won't be joining you," Jiang Chen said.
Upon hearing this, Xu Zhuzhu felt there was no need to press further. She had invited Jiang Chen along without any ulterior motives; she simply thought it was exciting to meet a fellow Huaxia person in a foreign land.
"Alright then. By the way, are you currently employed or freelancing?" Xu Zhuzhu asked.
"Freelancing, I suppose," Jiang Chen replied casually.
"You must be running your own company. You don't seem like an ordinary person. If you come to Shenzhen in the future, feel free to look me up," Xu Zhuzhu said with a smile.
"Sure," Jiang Chen smiled back.
Noticing that Jiang Chen didn't seem interested in continuing the conversation, Xu Zhuzhu decided not to say more. The bus ride continued in silence, and over an hour later, they arrived at Mount Buddha.
Mount Buddha was vast and featured hot springs, making it an ideal vacation spot. Deep within the mountain lay the shrine of the Eastern Deity, which was large and open to the public, housing a statue of the Eastern Deity.
Over the past century, the Eastern Deity had been glorified and was no longer seen as a malevolent force but rather as a revered Demon God who had made significant contributions to Island Nation. Consequently, many tourists came to pay their respects without fully understanding its significance.
The Eastern Deity accepted offerings from mortals—wishes, resentments, greed, and anger. Every human harbored evil thoughts, and these dark intentions served as a latent power. Although this power was invisible and intangible, the Eastern Deity could absorb it. Over the past hundred years, countless people had come to worship at the Eastern Deity Shrine, allowing the deity to grow ever stronger from their malevolent energy.
Today marked the annual festival honoring the deity, attracting thousands of Islanders to participate. It was said that this festival could cleanse one's soul, which drew many individuals burdened by guilt—those with heavier dark thoughts found it especially appealing. For the Eastern Deity, this was a grand feast.
After disembarking from the bus around noon, Jiang Chen noticed that due to the festival, Mount Buddha was crowded. He preferred not to draw attention to himself and planned to seek out the Eastern Deity later in the evening.
In fact, tourists were mostly unable to enter the temple because someone from the Takeda Family had informed the authorities about Jiang Chen's intention to find the Eastern Deity. To prevent any incidents, notices had been posted at the entrance.
As soon as Xu Zhuzhu got off the bus, her friend pulled her away for lunch. Jiang Chen and Tengye Kikuko also set off in search of a place to eat.
When traveling, one naturally wants to try local specialties. Being coastal, Mount Buddha offered plenty of seafood as well as Hokkaido's famous ramen.
Tengye Kikuko led Jiang Chen to a restaurant that was considered the most upscale establishment in Mount Buddha—catering primarily to wealthy patrons who could afford such luxury dining experiences.
As they entered the restaurant, Jiang Chen was surprised to find Xu Zhuzhu and Qian Xinyi there as well.
Xu Zhuzhu greeted them warmly and invited Jiang Chen to join them for lunch. Faced with her hospitality, Jiang Chen accepted without hesitation and sat down with them.
However, upon seeing Jiang Chen, Qian Xinyi's expression immediately soured; her brows furrowed with visible dissatisfaction and anxiety.
