"What happened? Why are you the only one here today? Where is Brother Mu?"
Su Che frowned, a hint of displeasure in his voice.
"Don't mention it. I don't know which heartless beast burned down Zhen's Residence. If I find out who did it, I won't let them off easily."
Xu Mu was slightly surprised; he knew about Zhen's Residence. It was rumored to be a mansion bestowed by the Former Emperor to Consort Zhen. After Consort Zhen's family heroically sacrificed themselves, she didn't want to return to that sorrowful place but desired a quiet spot outside the palace to spend some time alone occasionally.
The Former Emperor favored Consort Zhen and found her such a residence, but after Consort Zhen's death, it was supposed to be inherited by her son. However, Duke Beiqin, Mu Junze, had a royal residence, and this mansion changed hands several times before being bought by a young stranger.
It was said that the new owner originally did not have the surname Mu; he changed his name after purchasing the mansion, and that person was Mu Zhe. Xu Mu had previously inquired about him and found that Mu Zhe had no backing in the capital, was reclusive, and had few friends. His only advantage was being the owner of Zhen's Residence, which earned him some respect from others due to its reputation.
As for the fire, it had nothing to do with him, but he knew who was responsible. However, he wouldn't let Su Che know this; the fire provided him with an opportunity.
"You weren't hurt, that's good. I've asked Xiao Nan to prepare hot water; you should bathe and change your clothes," Xu Mu said after glancing at Su Che without receiving a response.
"I'll review outside while I wait for you. I have a smaller outfit that you've only tried on once; it should fit you perfectly. Don't worry; I'll have Xiao Tao and Xiao Nan keep watch so no one will disturb you."
Upon hearing this, Su Che finally agreed. Once inside, he checked around carefully; he didn't believe this incident had nothing to do with Xu Mu. With Mu Junze involved, their opportunities for contact were limited. He felt Xu Mu would never miss this chance and remained particularly cautious.
After another thorough inspection and finding nothing amiss, he finally relaxed enough to bathe.
Outside the courtyard gate, Xiao Si glanced inside but didn't see Su Che's figure. Frowning slightly, he double-checked the address to confirm it was indeed this courtyard before stepping inside.
Seeing Xu Mu alone in the yard, he approached and inquired, "Excuse me, sir, is Su Che present?"
Xu Mu nodded and replied with a smile, "He is bathing in my room. If you have something to discuss, feel free to tell me."
Upon hearing this, Xiao Si scrutinized Xu Mu and uncertainly asked, "Are you referring to the wealthiest man in the capital, Su Family's Su Che?"
Xu Mu put down his book at this remark and spoke with slight annoyance.
"You are quite strange. Besides him, who else in the capital is named Su Che? Are you looking for A Che for any particular reason? If not, please leave; it’s getting late and we need to rest."
Xiao Si noticed that Xu Mu seemed sincere and natural in his words. Just then, he caught sight of Xiao Tao carrying a basin of water, but in his haste, he didn’t notice him. Seeing Xiao Tao confirmed to Xiao Si that Su Che was indeed here, yet Xu Mu's words left him feeling very uncomfortable.
However, his master had no legitimate identity to speak of, so he could only angrily say, "Please inform Young Master Su that my master has matters to attend to and cannot come these days," before turning to leave.
Xu Mu watched as he departed, a triumphant look on his face as he moved forward to close the door. He then made an excuse to find Xiao Tao and suggested they go out together to buy some supplies.
"A Che hasn’t eaten yet, has he? It’s my fault for neglecting him; I don’t even know what he likes. Why don’t you come with me to buy some food so A Che won’t go hungry?"
Xiao Tao thought this was a good idea; there wasn’t much he could do alone anyway, and being with Xu Mu meant he wouldn’t be able to do anything to his master. After all, his master had been busy helping Zhen's Residence all day and hadn’t eaten anything, so he agreed to accompany Xu Mu.
Before long, Su Che had finished bathing and unwittingly put on the prepared clothes. Just as he was about to tidy himself up and head out, he suddenly felt a wave of heat wash over him, his limbs grew weak and unsteady, but fortunately, he hadn’t completely lost the ability to move.
Struggling to stay upright, he looked at the water in the tub and stumbled against it, causing ripples to form that made him feel a bit dazed. Before he could reach out to check, he felt someone embrace him from behind; warm breath brushed against his ear, intensifying the heat within him.
Su Che was taken aback; despite being cautious, he hadn’t anticipated falling into Xu Mu’s trap. At that moment, he lacked the strength to push the person away and weakly asked, "What… what have you done to me?"
Xu Mu panted heavily behind him, his hands roaming over Su Che’s body with impatience as he replied, "A Che, do you think there’s something wrong with the water? But this water was prepared by Xiao Tao and Xiao Nan together; even if I wanted to tamper with it, I had no chance."
"Does this outfit fit you well? I specially prepared it for you. Do you know how heartbroken I’ve been seeing you so close with Mu Zhe these past few days? But it doesn’t matter; you can only be mine."
Su Che bit down hard on his lip, the taste of blood filling his mouth; even so, it only brought him a fleeting moment of clarity without any further thoughts.
"What… what do you want?"
"Hah, what do I want? Of course, it’s what you used to always cling to me for. It’s been a while since we’ve done that; I know you’ve been thinking about it too. A Che, let’s reconcile. Once I pass my exams and become successful, I’ll marry you—how about that?"
"Whether it's a grand wedding procession or an Eight Bearers Palanquin, I don’t care what others think; I will marry you properly and will never stray again. If you trust me… no, you should trust me; I will never betray you."
As Xu Mu spoke eagerly, he turned Su Che around to face him. He gazed into those already hazy eyes and flushed cheeks—this sight had haunted him for countless days.
He wished he could execute him on the spot. He picked up Su Che and placed him on the bed, then began to loosen his clothing.
Su Che lay on the bed, his breath slightly uneven, his limbs weak, but his voice was icy cold. "What have you done to Xiao Tao?"
Xu Mu let out a light laugh; even at this moment, he was still thinking of someone else. He didn’t answer and leaned in to kiss Su Che's red lips.
Suddenly, Xu Mu felt a sharp pain at the back of his neck. He let out a muffled groan, and darkness enveloped him as he began to fall onto Su Che.
But someone behind him caught him and tossed him aside. When Su Che saw who it was, the tension in his heart finally eased.
As the effects of the drug surged through him, he could no longer hold on. The last flicker of clarity in his eyes vanished, leaving him feeling feverish. Instinctively, he began to shed his clothes, but just as he was about to make a move, a large hand stopped him.
