"I confess, I confess, I confess."
Xu Mu immediately began recounting all the wrongdoings he had committed, no matter how trivial, even mentioning the time in his childhood when he had urinated in the neighbor's dog's bowl.
Little did he know that the Judge was furious and ready to punish him.
"In my presence, you dare to conceal the truth! Unrepentant and obstinate, you are utterly incorrigible and guilty of heinous crimes! Bring forth the punishment!"
Xu Mu was terrified and quickly revealed how he had manipulated Su Che and deceived him.
Upon hearing this, the Judge looked at him and spoke in a voice filled with authority.
"On the day of the fire at Zhen's Residence, you will also explain what you did there?"
Xu Mu hurriedly explained that he did not start the fire himself; rather, he had incited someone else to do it and then got that person drunk, causing them to accidentally ignite Zhen's Residence.
After confessing everything, Xu Mu cried out, "Your Honor, I cannot die yet! I have not yet achieved my scholarly title, and my sick mother is still waiting for me to return home in glory..."
But before he could finish his plea, Su Che's voice came from behind him.
"So this is how you deceived me. It was all part of your plan from the beginning, wasn't it?"
Xu Mu was taken aback and turned around. At that moment, the candlelight in the room was normal, and the door was open. Behind Su Che stood Su Father and Su Mother, both looking at Xu Mu with disbelief, their hearts aching like a knife wound.
Su Mother was in tears, her voice trembling with either anger or heartbreak over her misguided affection for him over the years.
"You came to the Su Family as a child; how has the Su Family treated you? Even when you made mistakes, your uncle and I could not bear to scold or blame you. We have treated you like our own child all these years; even a stone would have warmed up under our care, yet you repay us like this?"
Su Father's face darkened as he shook his head and left behind a final remark.
"Your connection with the Su Family ends here. From now on, paths diverge; if your mother asks about this, I will have a clear conscience. I will not pursue past grievances, but do not mention that you were ever part of the Su Family."
With that, he took his sorrowful wife by the hand and left. Xu Mu stood there in shock at this sudden turn of events, unable to process what had just happened.
It wasn't until Mu Junze appeared and took Su Che's hand to leave that Xu Mu finally realized he had been deceived.
He forced a bitter smile and shouted at Su Che, "Su Che! You deceived me! You can't treat me like this! You can't do this to me! Su Che!"
Hearing this, Su Che turned around to look at him and replied, "I indeed should not have treated you this way."
Xu Mu suddenly felt a glimmer of hope, but Su Che's next words plunged him back into despair.
"I should have you torn apart, a beast like you is not worth mourning!"
Seeing the unabashed hatred in Su Che's eyes, he truly wished for his death. Xu Mu felt disheartened; just when he thought he was doomed, someone quietly set him free after they had all left.
As he was about to ask who it was, the person spoke softly to him. "This is not a place for conversation. If you wish to survive, follow me."
Xu Mu pondered for a moment. He had nowhere to go; staying here would only lead to his death. He didn't believe that Su Che, despite his hatred, would let him live.
Now that someone had come to rescue him, regardless of whether it was genuine or not, he had to take the chance. If it was a trap, he would lose his head; if it was real, perhaps he could escape and turn the situation around.
He gritted his teeth and decided to take the gamble, following the stranger.
They arrived at an empty place where the person finally pulled down their mask. Xu Mu was slightly surprised; he recognized this person as Fang Yitong, who was usually on good terms with him.
Seeing him here was unexpected, but after the earlier deception, Xu Mu was more vigilant. He looked at Fang Yitong and asked, "Why are you here?"
Fang Yitong glanced around before replying, "I intended to visit your home yesterday. Just as I reached your doorstep, I saw two people sneaking out with a burlap sack that looked like it contained a person. Worried, I followed them..."
To his shock, he discovered that the sack contained Xu Mu. Thinking Xu Mu was being persecuted and fearing something might happen if he left, he stayed behind and waited for the right moment to knock out one of the captors and disguise himself to blend in.
However, not long after entering, he nearly revealed himself when he overheard them discussing their master’s leniency but also how Xu Mu had committed serious offenses and would have to endure some suffering; they planned to leave him there for a few days of torment.
Seizing the opportunity, Fang Yitong managed to bring Xu Mu away. After hearing this, Xu Mu still felt puzzled because even from his perspective, what he had said in that room didn't seem too serious on its own.
But taken together, it was indeed excessive. He prided himself on being a man who could bend and stretch as needed to achieve his goals by any means necessary; yet in reality, such people were hard to detect. Even if discovered, most would avoid them rather than rush in to save them like Fang Yitong did.
Fang Yitong noticed his skepticism and said, "Do you remember Xiao Cui?"
At this mention, Xu Mu recalled after some time that Xiao Cui was a girl from a poor family who was quite beautiful. Fang Yitong had taken an interest in her during a market visit; when she refused him outright, Fang Yitong had someone abduct her and violated her.
Afterward, she threatened to report him to the authorities. Xu Mu had witnessed this incident and thought about his usual good relations with Fang Yitong and how much money he had spent on him.
Even if Su Che did not leave the courtyard, Xu Mu could not rely solely on one path until death; having an alternative route was always better.
Although this was the first time he had dealt with such a matter, he had often heard others talk about it and had picked up some knowledge on his own. Coupled with his silver tongue, he stepped in to help Fang Yitong handle the situation.
Afterward, Xiao Cui was naturally silenced. He knew this was because it had been his suggestion, and since it was such a long time ago, he had almost forgotten about it until Fang Yitong unexpectedly brought it up. However, that didn’t mean much; he had nothing now, so what did Fang Yitong want?
Could it be his body? Fang Yitong was known to be indiscriminate in his tastes. The thought made Xu Mu instinctively take a few steps back, hands raised protectively, his face filled with vigilance.
“ brother Fang wouldn’t be thinking of… No way! I’d rather die than endure such humiliation. Although I have an affinity for men, I refuse to be treated like a servant. Even if it’s the one above, you and I could never be!”
His words were firm and left no room for doubt. Fang Yitong looked at Xu Mu, who wore an expression of clear rejection, with disdain.
Turning slightly to the side, he let out a dry heave before finally feeling some relief. He stepped forward and spat on the ground.
“It's true that I’m open to both men and women, but I’m not just anyone who will accept anyone! What do you take me for? You think of me as a brother, yet your mind is filled with filthy thoughts!”
