I didn't manage to get the so-called nonsense "Imperial Seal" that Yun Yao mentioned. After quietly observing He Zheyu for two days, I couldn't find the best opportunity to act.
However, He Zheyu was pleased by my initiative to approach him and moved the Coronation Ceremony up by five days.
Plans often change unexpectedly. When Yun Yao learned of this, the sadness on her face flickered briefly, and a shadow crossed her eyes before she suggested to He Zheyu that we go together to Qingguang Temple in the outskirts to pay our respects.
Despite my reluctance, I had no choice but to comply. With a heavy sigh, I climbed into the carriage heading to Qingguang Temple alongside Yun Yao, my steps feeling burdensome as I stepped onto the carriage platform.
On our way back to the palace, as we reached Fallen Leaf Slope, Yun Yao pulled back the curtain and gently pushed aside a corner, telling the driver, "Be careful; this slope is steep."
Just after she spoke, the carriage jolted violently and came to a sudden stop.
A cacophony of noise filled the air, followed by sounds of fierce fighting and screams.
"We're in trouble! We're being attacked by bandits!" Yun Yao exclaimed in panic, grabbing my hand and urging me to jump down from the carriage. "Run!"
As we leaped off the carriage, one of the masked figures had already split it in half. The horses began to whinny and thrash about wildly, their hooves scraping against the ground.
Fallen Leaf Slope was steep and bordered by a valley. I had been with Yun Yao just moments ago, but in an instant, we were separated. Anxiety gripped me as I looked around frantically; I had never felt so panicked before. I didn't know how to hide, my body trembling slightly.
Suddenly, a glinting blade swung toward my head. My eyes widened in terror as I froze in shock, but before I could react, a black-clad figure was sent flying with a scream. I felt myself lifted effortlessly onto a horse.
In my astonishment, a familiar voice rang out beside me: "Hold on tight and sit properly!"
It was He Zheyang.
I could only feel the wind howling past my ears, my hair flying wildly as I watched the distance between us and the group grow. Suddenly, an arrow struck the horse's hind leg, causing it to bolt toward the valley, the sound of its hooves echoing in the canyon.
I rubbed my temples and began to look around for He Zheyang, slowly turning my head.
As soon as I propped myself up, I heard his concerned voice: "You're awake? Are you hurt?" He finally relaxed when I assured him I was fine, letting out a sigh of relief. "I came too late."
How could we be so unlucky? Even going to pray could lead us to bandits. I frowned, feeling frustrated.
He Zheyang glanced at me. "You really are naïve. Think about it carefully—if those people were truly bandits, why would they only target you?"
I recalled the entire sequence of events. After Yun Yao pulled me off the carriage, she vanished. A chill ran down my spine as I realized, "Could it be that Yun Yao is trying to harm me?"
She fed me Venomous Charm Pill s and wasn't satisfied; she actually wanted my life!
"When I learned you were going to Qingguang Temple with her, I suspected something. The only steep terrain on the way back to the palace is Fallen Leaf Slope; they would choose this place to strike." He Zheyang sighed and shook his head helplessly. "I underestimated her ruthlessness."
Then he looked into my dark eyes. " Zhi Su, ever since you left last time, my heart has been aching. I've finally realized that nothing in this world is more important than you. Without the world, I can still live, but without you... I can't imagine how I would go on."
He Zheyang led me out of the valley and into an inn called Fortune Inn.
That night, he took me for a walk by the lake. After what seemed like a long contemplation, he said to me, " Zhi Su, if we both go missing, the Emperor will definitely suspect something and launch a massive search. So I must return to the palace to announce that you fell into the valley and died, then we can escape far away."
Before returning to the palace, he repeatedly urged me, "Just wait for me at the inn. Once everything is arranged, I will come back for you immediately." He held my hand tightly, his eyes filled with reluctance and worry.
After he left, I began to imagine what our life together would be like—sleeping soundly every night and waking up to the sun streaming through the window. But I waited for him at Fortune Inn for five days, and he still did not return.
If it weren't for that day, I think I might have continued to wait.
