Panic 3: She is dead

That night was stifling hot, just like any other night. 0

I turned off the lights and set up my telescope, using the neon light filtering in through the window as my guide. 0

Everything was ready. I pressed my right eye against the eyepiece and adjusted the focus with my left hand. The image gradually came into view, but what I saw sent a rush of blood through my veins: a woman in pajamas lay on the ground, a sharp knife protruding from her abdomen, the area around the wound soaked in crimson! 0

I frantically scratched my scalp, everything felt unreal, and I began to doubt whether my eyes were deceiving me. With my heart racing, I leaned closer to the telescope again. 0

My heart sank; I hadn’t misread it—she was lying there!! 0

Instinctively, I pulled the curtains shut and turned on the lights. I felt as if I had lost all support and stumbled back onto my bed, overwhelmed by the sudden shock. 0

I couldn’t help but cover my face with my hands, fingers digging deep into my cheeks as I shook my head vigorously, trying desperately to calm myself down. 0

As I gradually regained my composure, a wave of sadness washed over me; deep down, I realized that I truly liked her! 0

Had she committed suicide? Or was she murdered? 0

My brother worked as a private detective; perhaps he could help. 0

Right now, the most important thing was to call the police. 0

Without thinking twice, I hurried out of the living room, my steps slightly frantic as I picked up the phone to report what had happened. My mother was stunned by my pale and anxious expression. 0

I struggled to keep my voice steady during the call, succinctly explaining everything while providing my name and address. My fingers unconsciously twisted around the phone cord. 0

Then my legs gave way, and I collapsed onto the sofa, clutching my head tightly with both hands, knuckles turning white from the pressure. My nerves were taut, and my body trembled slightly. 0

My father and brother hadn’t returned home yet; it was just me and my mother. She was startled by my conversation on the phone and seemed even more panicked than I was, pacing nervously and wringing her hands on her clothes. 0

At that moment, the phone rang again. It jolted me like an electric shock; instinctively, I reached for it and pressed the receiver tightly against my ear. 0

A regular man's voice came through: “Are you Wang Aiguo?” 0

I replied, "Yes." 0

The man asked, "Is this the police station? Did you just call the police?" 0

I answered, "Yes... Yes." 0

The officer said, "It's currently 9:30, right?" 0

I quickly looked up at the clock, my eyes focusing rapidly before I responded, "Yes." 0

The officer continued, "Can you make it to XX Police Station before 9:50?" 0

I frowned slightly, thought for a moment, and replied, "I should be able to." 0

The officer asked, "You know the address, right?" 0

I hurriedly responded, "Yes... I know." 0

Once the call ended, I rushed back to my room to change. After fumbling through my clothes, I hurried out and anxiously took a special bus downstairs. My eyes were glued to the window as we drove, and soon enough, we arrived at XX Police Station. 0

It was exactly 9:50. 0

I approached the officer on duty, slightly out of breath. I explained my purpose for being there. He maintained a blank expression as he took down some notes and then gestured for me to sit on a bench and wait. 0

This was my first time in a police station, and I felt completely out of place. In my mind, this was a place for those who had gotten into trouble. But now I faced an enormous dilemma—how could I explain the circumstances of discovering the murder? 0

The thought of peeking into someone else's affairs felt almost impossible to voice; I might even be accused of voyeurism! 0

Nervously sitting on the bench, I rubbed my knees with my hands. 0

After waiting for about half an hour—though it felt like an hour—I slowly stood up. After hesitating for a moment, I walked over to the officer I had spoken to earlier. Forcing a smile onto my face, I politely asked him how much longer I would have to wait. He informed me that the responsible detectives were all out on duty. 0

Just as he finished speaking, rapid footsteps echoed from the direction of the main door. Instinctively turning around, I saw four men and one woman approaching with steady strides. The man in front had a robust build and walked with an imposing presence that commanded attention. He remained silent, his deep-set eyes seemingly lost in thought. 0

As he drew closer, only a few feet separated us; yet his expression and movements showed no signs of change. 0

I stood there in a daze, my heart racing wildly as if it were about to burst from my chest, and my breathing became rapid. 0

He brushed past me, his movements still graceful and coordinated; for some reason, I felt an unexpected sense of calm. 0

Perhaps this was the aura that a Public Servant should possess, and gradually, my racing heart began to settle. 0

“Captain Liu, someone is looking for you,” the officer from earlier called out, then introduced me, “This is Captain Liu Youming from the Major Crimes Unit.” 0

Captain Liu turned around, his gaze sharp and probing as he asked, “What’s the matter?” 0

I straightened slightly and reported to him, “I called the police; I saw a woman stabbed to death.” 0

“Oh, so you’re the one who reported it? What are you doing here?” 0

“What do you mean? You called me here!” 0

“That’s not true; we haven’t done that yet. But since you’re here, just follow me.” 0

With that, Captain Liu turned and walked away with firm strides, and I hurried to keep up with him along with the others. However, after just two or three steps, he suddenly stopped, bending down as if he had noticed something on the ground. His eyes were fixed intently on it. 0

After about five or six seconds, he lifted his head and continued striding forward. 0
