"Ahua, what's wrong?" my wife asked me.
I pointed at the monitor. "Look."
On the screen, Da Hei was barking furiously towards the Entrance Hall.
It seemed there was something in the Entrance Hall, but I couldn't see anything.
I asked my wife, and she couldn't see it either.
"Is it Dad?" she whispered to me.
"I don't know. Whatever it is, it doesn't dare enter the living room; it's afraid of Da Hei."
My wife felt a bit reassured.
Just then, two figures suddenly appeared on the monitor.
"Oh no!" I paled, "It's Mom and Dad!"
"What?" My wife gasped, "Didn't we tell them not to leave their room?"
On the monitor, my father-in-law was dressed and had come into the living room.
My wife quickly dialed her father's number.
But the phone rang for a long time without anyone answering.
On the monitor, my father-in-law was angrily pointing at Da Hei and cursing.
"You beast, barking like that in the middle of the night! It's so noisy."
Da Hei ignored him and continued to bark at the Entrance Hall.
"You mutt, just wait until I beat you to death."
My father-in-law angrily grabbed a baseball bat nearby and swung it at Da Hei.
Da Hei nimbly dodged and bared its teeth at my father-in-law.
Exhausted and panting, my father-in-law hadn't even touched a hair on Da Hei.
"Lao Liu, just let it go; let's go back to our room," my mother-in-law advised.
Panting heavily, my father-in-law pushed my mother-in-law back into their room.
"You stay in there; I must drive this damn dog out!"
Frustrated, he waved the baseball bat and chased after Da Hei.
My wife was in a panic.
She was afraid that if she provoked Da Hei, it might bite her father, and she also worried that her father might accidentally hurt Da Hei.
Before I could stop her, she opened the bedroom door and ran out.
"Yan Yan, Yan Yan..."
At that moment, my father's hoarse voice echoed eerily from the Entrance Hall.
"Wife, whatever you do, don't respond!" I shouted.
It was too late; I had forgotten to tell her that when encountering a dead person, one should not respond. She sighed softly. Soon, that vacant expression returned to my wife's face. It seemed as if she couldn't hear me shouting or even comprehend what was happening. She just stood there, motionless, like a puppet.
I quickly followed her out and tightly grasped her hand. "Lao Liu, someone is calling for our daughter at the door. Did you hear that?"
"This voice... why does it sound so familiar?" my mother-in-law said, uncertainty in her tone.
My father-in-law stopped and exchanged glances with my mother-in-law. The expression on his face changed as well; he had clearly heard it too.
"Yan Yan, Yan Yan..." Suddenly, the voice rang out again.
"Lao Wu..."
"It's Ahua's dad..." Both my father-in-law and mother-in-law exclaimed in shock.
My mother-in-law screamed in fright and collapsed onto the ground. My father-in-law's hand trembled, and the baseball bat fell from his grip.
At that moment, Yan Yan broke free from my hold and began to move mechanically toward the entrance hall. I quickly opened my arms and embraced her from behind, calling out loudly, "Wife, wake up!"
But it was as if she couldn't hear me at all. Her strength suddenly increased significantly. I was being pulled along step by step toward the door.
"Dad, Mom, come help! We can't let Yan Yan go!" My father-in-law and mother-in-law finally reacted and prepared to assist me. Although they still found it hard to believe, they could see something was wrong with Yan Yan.
However, my shouting seemed to anger her. She grabbed my wrist with a force that made me cry out in pain, causing my hand to drop limply. She turned around and glared at us with a fierce and venomous gaze.
Oh my God! Her eyes had completely turned black! My father-in-law and I stumbled back in shock, while my mother-in-law screamed in terror.
At that moment, Da Hei suddenly dashed in front of Yan Yan to block her path. It kept turning its head and barking wildly toward the entrance hall. But Yan Yan's strength was beyond what any ordinary person could comprehend. Da Hei couldn't stop her either and was pushed forward along with her.
"What should I do, what should I do..."
As I got closer to the door, anxiety consumed me.
Suddenly, the incense burner in front of the God of Wealth caught my eye.
"I've got it!"
I quickly ran over, grabbed the incense burner, and turned back to face Yan Yan.
"Go, catch the treasure!"
I poured the ashes from the incense burner all over my wife like a shower of flowers.
"I'm sorry, dear."
The effect was immediate; Yan Yan's body froze in place.
"It worked!" I sighed in relief.
Just as I was secretly pleased that my makeshift plan had some merit, Yan Yan's body suddenly collapsed to the ground.
My father-in-law reacted swiftly and caught her.
"Yan Yan, Yan Yan..."
My in-laws called out repeatedly but received no response.
My mother-in-law reached out to check for her breath.
"Lao Liu, our daughter... she has no breath!" my mother-in-law stammered.
"Impossible!" my father-in-law shouted.
I dashed over in a frenzy.
"Wife, what's wrong?"
"Please don't scare me!"
I quickly laid her flat on the ground and began performing CPR.
My father-in-law frantically called out my wife's name, trying to wake her up.
But she lay there with her eyes closed, showing no signs of response.
