In an instant, Rao Jie felt like crying.
Long Yong was so good... truly wonderful... but she didn't deserve it, because she couldn't reciprocate. Had she fallen in love with Wu Rong? She dared not say it; Wu Rong played too many roles in her heart for her to discern which feeling dominated—was it dependence, faith, habit, gratitude, or love? Rao Jie thought about how this part of her feelings for Long Yong had become clear, yet she wanted to cry. She truly didn’t want to owe anyone anything, especially not emotional debts. Her conscience was uneasy.
Gradually, as Rao Jie looked at Long Yong, her eyes turned red. The gentle smile that had adorned Long Yong's face faded when he met Rao Jie’s gaze, replaced by a bittersweet smile of loneliness. It seemed he had seen something in the change of her expression and understood.
Long Yong withdrew his hand, straightened his posture, and shifted his gaze toward the distant mountains and sky. The evening glow began to appear—beautiful and vast, yet empty. He took a deep breath to calm himself.
Unable to resist, he walked down the steps to stand beside Rao Jie. He extended two fingers and playfully poked her chubby cheeks with a little force. “Smile for me. Even if I can't bring you happiness, I absolutely don’t want to bring you tears of guilt. That’s never what I wanted.”
Rao Jie felt as if a heavy stone pressed down on her chest, making it hard to breathe. Once everything clicked into place for her, she didn’t want to hesitate any longer or make either of them suffer. But when Long Yong spoke to her like that, she found herself too scared to respond.
Yet Long Yong gradually revealed a doting smile again as he gently patted Rao Jie’s head. “Come on now, do you have something you want to tell me? Go ahead; it's okay.”
In that moment when Long Yong saw the redness in Rao Jie's eyes, he understood too. Indeed... love was not something that could be forced. Although he felt some regret that he wasn’t the first person to appear before her when she faced difficulties for the first time. Perhaps if he had been the one she encountered then—someone she could rely on—the outcome would have been completely different now.
Unfortunately, he arrived just a moment too late; love does not wait and has already flown away. No amount of effort later would change that.
Long Yong had actually prepared himself for this. When you like someone, you can usually sense whether that person has feelings for you or not. He was not someone who liked to deceive himself. Gradually, he had come to accept the possibility that he might fail.
So at this moment, even though he felt sad, it didn’t hit him as hard. He was waiting… waiting for the moment when Rao Jie would deliver the verdict.
Perhaps when Rao Jie said sorry, it would hurt him deeply. But he had no choice but to hear that final word.
As Long Yong waited, Rao Jie suddenly bowed deeply and spoke loudly to him. “Thank you! Long Yong, thank you for liking me. I truly appreciate all the kindness you've shown me. Even though I cannot accept your feelings, I will remember that someone cared for me so deeply.”
Long Yong was taken aback; his expression blanked out in an instant. A strange feeling surged within him, as if his efforts had been acknowledged in some way, yet he knew he hadn’t truly received anything from Rao Jie.
