With a sense of unease, I walked through the bustling streets with Hu Fang. Despite the surrounding noise and commotion, all I could hear was the pounding of my own heart. I glanced at Hu Fang; she was holding onto my arm tightly, leaning against me, occasionally looking up at me.
"Do you want to go watch a movie?" I asked. She smiled brightly and lifted her head, "Sure! What should we watch?" I smiled back, "Let's check what's playing first. We can watch whatever you want." At that moment, my mind was far from the movies; I just wanted to find a place to finish writing this story.
When we arrived at the cinema, Hu Fang eagerly browsed the movie selections while I scanned the surroundings, thinking about how to sneak away to write. "How about this one?" Hu Fang tugged at my arm, pointing to a newly released film. "You want to see this? I'll go buy the tickets; wait for me here," I said as I started to walk away. But she wouldn’t give me any chance to escape and tightly held onto my arm, "I'll go with you!"
Seeing that she wouldn’t even let me have a moment alone made me even more anxious. "If she drags this out until evening, I'm doomed!" Just then, the attendant handed me the tickets, saying, "Here are your tickets; please keep them safe." I looked at the tickets and saw we still had twenty minutes before the show started. I turned to Hu Fang and said, "You sit here for a moment; I'm going to the restroom."
Hu Fang hurriedly followed me as I tried to leave. "I'll go with you!" she insisted. I forced a smile and replied, "It's the men's room; do you really want to come in?" Hearing this, she finally let go.
As soon as I entered the restroom, I quickly pulled out my notebook and began writing, trying not to raise her suspicions. I spent less than ten minutes inside before washing my hands and rushing out. As soon as I stepped outside, I saw Hu Fang waiting for me by the door. When she saw me come out, she grabbed my arm again with a cheerful smile, "The movie is about to start; let’s go in!"
I quickly composed myself and replied, "Ah… okay, let’s go." Although I pretended to be calm on the surface, inside I was extremely anxious, constantly searching for another opportunity to slip away since I was so close to finishing my writing.
A little while into the movie, I turned to Hu Fang again and said, "Um, I think I might have an upset stomach; I'm going to the restroom again." With that, I tried to get up.
She immediately grabbed my arm again when she realized what I was trying to do. At that moment, her expression shifted from its previous charm to something more sinister. It was as if she were silently warning me, "If you try to run again, I'll make you regret it!" I didn’t dare confront her directly; if I ran away now, it would surely mean disaster for both of us—and possibly involve others in the theater as well.
Realizing this, I reluctantly sat back down and continued our standoff. However, my mind was elsewhere; thoughts raced through my head about what had happened earlier while playing Spirit Writing. The Vengeful Spirit could have possessed me directly but chose not to. Moreover, after Hu Fang became possessed by a ghost, she didn’t resort to self-harm like when Hao Yin had invaded her but instead seemed determined to kill me. The sight of Hao Yin on my chest had driven the Vengeful Spirit into a frenzy as if it had encountered an enemy.
"It seems everything is connected somehow to Hao Yin. According to Yin Li's theory that one person can only be marked by one Hao Yin—could it be that this isn't actually Hao Yin?" The thought felt like a significant clue that sparked further investigation in my mind.
"Hey, do you think this person could be the killer?" Hu Fang tugged at my sleeve and asked. Just when I'd begun piecing things together in my mind, her interruption made it all slip away. So instead of engaging further, I replied casually: "No way! It's just a comedy; don't worry too much about who the killer is—let's just enjoy ourselves." With that said, I discreetly pulled out my notebook and pen with one hand while shifting slightly aside to create space for writing. Then based on instinct alone, I began jotting down notes while quietly discussing the plot with Hu Fang beside me. She seemed engrossed in the movie and completely unaware of what I was doing.
Just as I was about to finish writing a crucial point, Hu Fang suddenly sensed something. She abruptly turned her head towards me with an intense killing intent in her eyes and suddenly seized my left hand tightly. Her nails dug painfully into my arm. The pain made me want to scream but stifled any sound; all I could do was grit my teeth and continue writing.
Due to the pain, beads of sweat began to form on my forehead. Just as I finished writing my last word, I felt Hu Fang's grip loosen, and she collapsed onto the chair. At the same time, I felt Hao Yin in my hand start to heat up, as if it were burning my skin. Instinctively, I raised my hand to take a look; indeed, Hao Yin was slowly fading away, but it only lasted for about half a minute before it stopped, and the burning sensation disappeared.
Seeing that Hao Yin had indeed diminished, I knew that the Vengeful Spirit within Hu Fang must have been expelled as well. I hurriedly nudged her, and she seemed to sense it, slowly lifting her head. Since she had collapsed while leaning on the arm that was gripping me, she opened her eyes to find her nails deeply embedded in my arm for several centimeters, still oozing blood. Startled, she let out a scream, and with that shout, we were promptly ejected from the theater by an angry audience.
Standing at the cinema entrance with her, she kept apologizing: "I'm sorry, I'm sorry! I really didn't mean to." While covering my bleeding wound, I asked, "What do you mean? Are you referring to you gripping me or your scream that got us kicked out?"
"I'm talking about everything that happened after I was possessed by the ghost..." She bowed deeply. I quickly stopped her: "Wait, you remember everything that happened after being possessed?!" She nodded slightly with a guilty expression: "Yes, but let's not dwell on that now. Let me help you take care of your wound first." I looked at my arm and smiled: "It's just a scratch; it's nothing." She frowned: "No way!" With that, she dragged me into a taxi heading straight for the hospital.
After bandaging my wound and getting a tetanus shot, Hu Fang insisted on treating me to dinner as an apology. Exhausted and sleepy, I wanted to go home and rest first before eating; she had no choice but to relent.
Once home, I flopped onto my bed and fell asleep immediately. It felt like I hadn't slept long when suddenly someone knocked on the door. Lying in bed, I impatiently shouted, "Who is it?" "It's me." Hearing Hu Fang's voice made me quickly get up to open the door.
As soon as I opened it, I saw Hu Fang standing there. I frowned: "What's wrong? Is there something you need?" "Aren't you going to invite me in?" she said with her head down. Hearing this, I hurriedly let her in and offered her a glass of water while asking what she needed.
She looked at me with a sweet voice: "Can't I come see you if there's nothing wrong? I'm here specifically to apologize." I replied: "Haven't you already apologized? Besides, it wasn't you who did those things; it was that ghost." Suddenly her expression turned serious: "I'm not here to apologize for that." Curiously, I asked: "Then what is it?" "It's because I wanted to kill you! Will you forgive me?!"
At that moment, Hu Fang's face transformed into the terrifying visage from when she was possessed by the ghost, opening her mouth wide as if to pounce on me. Just then, my phone rang urgently...
"Ding ding ding!" Wiping the sweat from my forehead, I sat up in bed and muttered to myself: "This damn nightmare." Picking up the phone revealed it was Hu Fang.
"Hello..." "Is this Shen Xu?" "Yes, it's me. Why are you calling so soon after I've just fallen asleep?" Rubbing my eyes, I added, "Did you forget? You've been asleep for two hours already!" Yawning, I said: "Ah~ Really? It felt like I'd only slept for a bit and had a nightmare... What's up?"
"Remember how I invited you to dinner before? I wanted to see if you're free today."
As soon as I heard the word 'dinner,' my stomach growled loudly. Quickly responding: "I'm free! I'm free! How could I forget? Right now, I'm feeling like I could eat an entire elephant." Hearing this made her chuckle: "Look at you so eager! We're going back to the place where you first took me out for dinner; this time it's on me~ Plus, I'll introduce a friend for you to meet."
"Great! I'll be there shortly." After hanging up the phone, I changed clothes and headed out.
When I arrived at the restaurant, Hu Fang was already there. She was sitting across from a man, and upon seeing me, she waved eagerly. I walked over with a smile and asked, "Who is this?"
Hu Fang smiled and introduced him, "This is a friend of mine. He's interested in supernatural phenomena. I told him about our situation, and he was eager to meet you, so I brought him along. You don't mind, do you?"
I nodded at Hu Fang and took a moment to size up the man. He seemed slightly older than me, very thin, and not particularly striking in appearance. Noticing my scrutiny, he quickly introduced himself, "Hello, I'm Li Zhisheng." I responded, "Hello, I'm Shen Xu."
Seeing the awkwardness in the air, Hu Fang called over a waiter to take our order and asked us, "What would you like to eat?" Li Zhisheng and I replied in unison, "Anything."
The three of us shared a laugh. Hu Fang ordered some of her favorite dishes while I opted for some main courses since I was quite hungry. Li Zhisheng only ordered a few snacks. Before long, the waiter brought our food to the table, and I couldn't hold back any longer; I started eating voraciously.
As Hu Fang picked up a chicken wing, she seemed to suddenly remember something and said to me, "When I was possessed before, I recalled something strange that I'm not sure if I should tell you." I put down my utensils and asked curiously, "What is it?"
She pondered for a moment before continuing, "Well... when I was possessed, my consciousness was actually very clear. I knew what I was doing; it’s just that I couldn't control myself. So..." She showed a guilty expression. I didn't interrupt her as she wiped her mouth and continued, "But strangely enough, even during the fight, although that Vengeful Spirit attacked fiercely with every blow, I could clearly feel that it didn't really want to kill you."
