"What happened next?" I asked curiously. Meng Zhuang feigned mystery, "After some investigation, my suspicion of murder was cleared, but it led to another case."
I became intrigued and asked, "A case within a case? Does it have anything to do with those two ghosts?" Meng Zhuang nodded and lit a cigarette. "Here's the thing: Wang Hao's father was indeed a professor at that school back then, but he developed an unhealthy desire and intended to prey on one of his female students."
Meng Zhuang sighed and continued, "That female student was the girl I mentioned in my earlier story. Wang Hao's father found an excuse to lure her into that abandoned building. Just as he was about to assault her, her boyfriend happened to walk in."
"The boy rushed in without thinking and tried to stop him. They immediately got into a scuffle, and in a moment of panic, Wang Hao's father struck too hard, accidentally killing the boy. Fearing exposure, he then killed the girl to silence her. He hid their bodies in that building and spread rumors that it was haunted to deter people from entering."
"Unexpectedly, Wang Hao's father truly became haunted by an evil spirit afterward, driving him insane. The rumors turned out to be true. The deceased couple has been wandering around that old warehouse ever since, seeking revenge. Our curiosity led us into the warehouse, giving them the opportunity they were waiting for..."
With that, Meng Zhuang lit another cigarette and exhaled smoke. I sighed and remarked, "Ah, this world is filled with so many wicked people; it's no wonder there are so many evil spirits."
By this time, it had grown dark. Unbeknownst to me, Meng Zhuang had already exited the highway and was now driving on a bumpy road. Doubts crept into my mind as I asked, "Why aren't we on the highway anymore?"
Meng Zhuang chuckled, "You wouldn't know this, but we can avoid a toll booth here." I thought to myself, "Why avoid a toll booth when these expenses can be reimbursed?"
As I pondered this, I sensed something was off and tightly gripped the seatbelt. Meanwhile, Meng Zhuang remained relaxed, smoking his cigarette and whistling.
Suddenly, in the beam of the headlights ahead, a figure appeared wearing a white robe. The person had long hair cascading over their shoulders, obscuring their face completely; only bare feet were visible beneath the white robe.
Seeing this situation, Meng Zhuang frantically honked the horn, but the figure stood still as if they hadn't heard anything. By then, it was too late to brake; Meng Zhuang had no choice but to swerve left sharply.
The truck crashed headlong into the hillside with a loud bang, shattering the windshield into pieces. I was thrown forward by inertia and hit my head hard, instantly losing consciousness.
When I woke up, I found myself alone in the car. The surroundings were pitch black, and all I could see was the front of the vehicle emitting white smoke. I shook my head, which throbbed painfully from the impact, and checked my body for other injuries. Fortunately, aside from the bump on my head, I seemed to be unharmed.
Struggling to unbuckle the slightly deformed seatbelt, I opened the car door to seek help, only to realize that I was in a desolate area with no signs of life; not even a single car passed by on the road. It dawned on me what had happened, and I hurriedly reached for my phone to call for help, but my pocket was empty.
"Could the impact have caused my phone to fall inside the car?" I thought as I returned to search for it. In this situation, where could I possibly find it? Even if it had fallen inside, there was no way to locate it amidst the twisted metal and scattered debris. There was no sign of my phone anywhere in the wreckage.
Just as I was at a loss, I noticed someone running towards me from a distance. I quickly stood up and rubbed my eyes; it turned out to be Meng Zhuang.
He gasped for breath as he approached me. "I woke up first and tried to find help, but there was no one around," he said.
"What about your phone?!" I asked curiously.
Meng Zhuang shrugged. "I couldn't find mine either when I woke up. By the way, who was that person in white we saw? Was it human or ghost?" Hearing this made me think, "Without a doubt, that was a person. If you hadn't come back, I might still be in the dark about it. But now that you’re here, Meng Zhuang, you’ve made a mistake."
Feigning concern, I replied, "Regardless of whether they are human or ghost, we are undoubtedly trapped here. And we can't leave—what will happen to the gold in the car?!"
Meng Zhuang quickly responded, "Right! What if we leave and lose the gold?" After pondering for a moment, I asked, "Do you have the key to the trunk? Otherwise, we need to find a way to hide the gold somewhere until we can get help and come back for it. What do you think?"
For some reason, upon hearing my suggestion, Meng Zhuang seemed a bit pleased. "Sure! I'll go open the trunk." He pulled out a key and led me to the back of the vehicle.
Meng Zhuang inserted the key into the lock without hesitation as if he already knew what awaited inside. However, as soon as he turned it, he let out a startled cry. "Oh no! The lock is already open!"
I smirked slightly behind him, thinking to myself, "Just as I suspected; this car is indeed empty!" With that thought in mind, I asked Meng Zhuang, "So what? Did someone steal the car too?"
He nodded. "It's very possible. But if they stole it, why would they close the doors?" With that, he yanked open the trunk door.
As he opened the door, a foul stench assaulted my senses. It was a smell I vaguely recognized, but it wasn't the typical fishy odor from a market; it was more akin to something rotting.
Meng Zhuang was also taken aback by the smell, stepping back repeatedly while covering his nose. "What... what is that Demonic Mark inside? Why does it smell so bad?" Seeing him retreat, I took a couple of steps forward and squinted into the darkness within. It was pitch black, and I could hardly see anything.
At that moment, a vehicle approached from behind us. The dark cargo hold was instantly illuminated by the headlights of the car. To our shock, Meng Zhuang and I discovered that there were three male corpses lying inside the cargo area, already in an advanced state of decay.
Meng Zhuang seemed completely unaware of this situation. In his surprise, he stumbled back a few steps and fell onto the ground.
